Kylexsis POV
Sebastien took a different route this time. Truth be told I had kind of hoped to see more of the bustling market of Lockheed on our way to the wall because for some reason I couldn't get enough of the medieval and fictional atmosphere. The difference of it in comparison to our usual local markets were the characters, what they sell and how they advertised their goods to the browsers.
We walked through a less crowded street consisting of mainly women walking on their way with baskets of flowers or something else covered with a cloth and men pushing carts or riding horses. The houses were lined up close to each other so close that there was not much space at each sides, all wooden and dark brown with age. The grounds were surprisingly and completely covered with a cobblestone. A radical significance to the muddy market place. It was quiet as we moved on, apart from the whisperings of women as they talked and walked, the whipping of horses as men rode them and the wagons moving on the stone.
"I'm pretty sure you expect me to comment on your appearance. Looking like that." Sebastien finally spoke. He'd been silent since we left the house and not so much as sparing me a glance. I had concluded his dislikes for my appearance to be the cause of the behavior and wished I could change it. But it was too late. My appearance was the most mundane look you can ever have on Earth, and in Tundra, it just so happens to have an uncanny resemblance to one of their late family member.
I looked at the back of his brown hair that waved ever so slightly to the gentle blow of the wind." I might have come off as reserved and a bit rude and I'm sorry if I made you feel uncomfortable." He finished moving his face a little to a profile view as if to show that he was acknowledging me.
"Reserved, huhn?" I mused with a small smile." I really didn't notice."
A chuckle left his lips, his slight curls bouncing at his movements when he turned his face towards me." Now you're being modest."
"Modest? Hardly." My eyes glinted playfulness as I walked up beside him and threw a weak punch to his shoulder.
He huffed, staring straight to my eyes." Well for what it's worth, you look quite nice. Mundane, if I didn't know you I'd think you were a normal female traveller looking for a job." He commented.
" Thanks." He nodded at my words, decoring through a small path to the left. It was also completely in cobblestone, two small narrow walls at each side blocked the houses and created a cool shade from the sun. Some fresh grasses had popped up from the gap in the cobblestone stone pavement. The path was unnaturally neat with a few steps at the end leading down towards an old wooden door.
Sebastien grabbed at the Rusty metal knob and pulled it open to reveal complete darkness. Cerulean halted in his tracks making my legs bump into his back." What's in there." He asked staring up at Sebastien.
Sebastien looked into the dark space before looking back at us with an assuring smile." It's just a portal that people hardly use, don't worry it's safe."
Cerulean was right to be conscious about everyones actions, we've only been here for three days and we couldn't just afford to trust people so easily. But it was Sebastien, I didn't sense any ill intentions from him, plus his family didn't at all seem eager to get rid of me.
The darkness created a coolness that I felt when we entered the space. With the door open it provided us with light that only reach about two inches inside the room, farther from that was just pitch black. Sebastien took hold of my hand gently, dragging me further into the dark space before shutting the door completely. I tried not to freak out when we were completely engulfed in darkness. I honestly was never really a bit fan of the dark, I'd always keep a light on back at Germany. I had this little glow light Clarke got me and I'd keep it on till the day broke. It sounded childish, a twenty year old man-woman scared of the dark but there were reasons.
My parents would always lock me in the basement after a rough beat up. It was always dark, and smelly and cold with lots of rats scurrying about. They didn't leave me untouched. The were huge and hungry, no one ever cleaned that place so the rats were savage. The ate at my toes, ate at my fingers and skin, I'd always leave that place with bruises and dozens of tiny bite marks.
"Are you alright?"Sebastien said from behind me.
I nodded with a silent gulp before remembering that he couldn't see me in the dark." I-im fine." I opted unconsciously squeezing his hand." I just find that I'm quite frightened of the dark."
"Well be out in a second. SCIN SCIR." He chanted loudly. A fire unexpectedly lit up the dark room. It wasn't bright enough to see my surroundings but it was bright enough to see that the fire was being emitted from his palm. My mouth dropped in amazement. I'd both seen and used electricity but fire was a whole different story. It was beautiful. It danced ever so graceful above his palm, the beautiful orange red color mesmerizing in my eyes.
"translationem mahic." He exclaimed throwing the fireball to the ground. The minute it touched the floor the flame turned purple and spread around the room covering the walls, covering us. I closed my eyes and screamed not wanting to be burned by the flames but it didn't burn me. It was rather cool on my skin. By the time I had opened up my eyes we were in engulfed in darkness again. I was grabbing on to Sebastien's hand like my life depended on it, while he stared at me with an amused smirk. Or I felt that he was staring at me with an amused smirk. Another ball of fire was floating above his hand.
I tore myself away from him, hoping that with the dim lighting he wouldn't see the huge blush staining my pale skin. I cleared my throat professionally and straightened my cloak." Sorry."
"It's all-" before he could finish the sentence the door opened wide, revealing a slender man standing at the entrance. His hair was dirty blonde and cut in a mullet, light brown eyes twinkling under the sunlight outside. He was in a cream colored shirt, brown breeches and muddy brown boots. His face, shirt and hands were stained with black dirt and beads of sweat dripped from his forehead and armpits soaking his clothes.
"Sebastien, Ah, zu'u knew nii would kos hi. Nobody kod faal vonon golt ol pogaas ol hi dreh." The man spoke in thick Vladimir.
" Ah, Semier, pruzah feyl." Sebastien greeted with a smile placing his palm on my back and pushing me towards the entrance of the door slowly.
" Pruzah feyl wa hi, hi los ni nau tiid, zeynon los aan bit rahgron-"(Sebastien you are late, Zeynon was angry) he stopped mid-sentence when we stepped closer into the lighting. His brown eyes dropped down to look at me, scrutinizing my entire face to my attire. I was glad I had the cloak on, that observing look made me feel open and assessed. His brows furrowed slightly as his eyes darted from me to Sebastien." Hi voth aan vahdin?" (You came with a woman)
" Coincidence. Semier this is Kylexisis, Kylexisis this is a fellow town friend, Semier." Sebastien introduced." She hardly speaks Vladimir so it would do me great if you spoke in dragon English."
" Ah, it is a pleasure to meet you, Miss Kylexisis." He said to me with a small smile, clenching his left hand into a fist. His voice was sweet and light, missing that deep mature bass to the tone. He was like that kind of men that puberty didn't affect their voices, and it suited him well too." Forgive me, I would have given you a handshake but as you can see my hands are filthy."
"Ah, it's fine. I did come here with the mindset to get dirty anyway." I let out an awkward laugh grabbing his left hand into a vigorous handshake. He stepped back a bit and blinked multiple times in surprise at the sudden skin contact. His hands were quite rough and hard, showing years of hard labor. I let go quickly, sending him a sheepish smile." Sorry,"
"Ah it's fine, women wouldn't want to get dirty so I was a bit surprised by your willingness for a handshake." He chuckled wave me off." You said you came here with the intent of getting dirty, what does that mean? "
" Kylexsis here plans to help out with the wall" Sebastien teased an amused chuckle escaping his throat.
" To help? "Semier gasped in disbelief, we moved away from the door." Surely you don't mean labour-"
"I mean exactly what you think, I'm here to help." I assured with a courageous smile." Or do you believe women to be all weak? "
Semier looked like his eyes was going to pop out of his sockets as he gaped at me. I don't blame him, even back on earth women were never meant to work on the field except slaves of course. They believed delicate women to break easily, well I'm going to break that absurd cycle of treating women like eggs. Sebastien snickered at the both of us, and my hands twitched. What a dick.
"I, uh..." He cleared his throat, a nervous smile curving in his heart shaped lips." No, not at all, it's just I have never met any woman willing to get their hands or dresses dirty."
"Meh, what's a little dirt. I'm a traveller, I think I've gotten dirty lots of times if you know what I mean." I waved him off, but honestly I didn't even know what I meant.
"A traveller I see, I noticed you didn't have our accent. Are you staying long?" He inquired, cocking his head in a child like curiosity.
"I just need to collect my bearings first is all, then I'll be on my way. It'll take a while but until I'm ready, I'll be staying at the Broywns residence for the time being."
He looked back at Sebastien with a raised brow." Right, however," he continued looking back to me and placing his hands on his almost slim waist." I'm sorry to inform you but, I don't think Zeynon will appreciate a woman doing labor. His pride won't allow a woman to pick up a heavy stone-"
" Oh, I'm not exactly going to be doing the labor, Cerulean will." I chimed hitching a thumb downwards where Cerulean sat on the green grass looking up in silence at our friendly banter.
"Ce- oh my- holy Tundra! That's a lightening cat!" Semier exclaimed covering his mouth to try to prevent a soft shocked gasp from escaping. His wide brown eyes scrutinized every art of Cerulean. Cerulean's discomfort irked me, AND his deadly annoyed glare went subtle towards Semier. He looked like he was about to snip his pretty face with his sharp kitty claws." Where did you get one? Did you tame it? Was it already assigned to you by the goddess Ekhanto by fate? If not how hard was it to find one let alone tame one? How does it feel like to be familiars, is it negative or positive, is he -"
"Semier, goddess above bombard her with questions why don't you!" Sebastien hissed irritatedly smacking his friend behind his nape.
Semier flushed, looking at me bashfully.
"Semier what is taking you so long! We need extra hands on deck if we want to finish this before another monster attacks." A barreling voice yelled from afar. We all turned our heads to look towards the gaping hole on the huge stone wall. Semier gestured for us to move quickly towards the site. Dozens of men were at work, to the left was a huge pile of stone replacements for the wall in which half of the workers carried to place at the hole while the other half cleared the ruined ones on the floor. As we finally reached the site, a large brawny man who I thought must be Zeynon placed his hands on his hips with a disapproving frown. His cream shirt looked a bit too small for his bulging muscles as they were tight over his skin, his leather pants were thick over his thick thighs and his boots where made to work in harsh conditions. The man was huge, probably six feet seven at most.
"Zeynon." Sebastien nodded his head in respective greeting.
"Sebastien." He nodded back before his demeanor changed and stared ranting heavenly know what in Vladimir. His accent was thick and astonishing and even if I wanted to hear more it made my mind go blank. The words had a twisted way of pronouncing themselves. Semier bit his lips and looked down to the ground as if they were being scolded by their father. Sebastien however, had his lips pursed boredly as he listened on. Suddenly, Zeynon's rant came to an end when bright blue eyes met with mine.
I flinched at the sudden eyes contact. His eyes narrowed after me making me inwardly fidget, I didn't know if I was supposed to introduce myself or let Semier and Sebastien do the talking.
"Goddess above, Zeynon don't scare the poor lady." Semier grumbled reaching out to throw a weak punch to his flanks.
"Wo los rek? "He asked in Vladimir. I knew what that meant clearly.(who is she?)
"My name is Kylexisis River Dakota, I'm a recent traveller who just came in yesterday and is housing at the Broywns residence for the time being." I answered pushing my chin in the air to avoid being pathetic, Sebastien wouldn't be here when I finally leave. I have to learn to stand my ground, and speak Vladimir quickly.
"Kylexisis..... what?" He spoke in English staring at me in wonder.
"Miss Kylexisis is staying at Sebastien's place for the time being -" Semier tried to cut in but was cut off by a dismissive wave of Zeynon's hand.
"Yeah, yeah, I got that bit thank you for your further elaboration Sem." Zeynon huffed looking me up and down again. He cleared his throat and went on to itch his hair awkwardly." Say, that doesn't quite explain what you are doing here. It's a men's work site, did you come here to escort Sebastien? Because if you did you may leave before something here hurts you, you know how tender you women's feet are."
Semier bit his lips and Sebastien strifked a snicker. Jerks! For heaven's sake, I can't leave in a world in which women are identified as the weak bunch what sort of rubbish is this. Argh, this is the problem with the female gender, always taken for granted and as a cracked shell what a pain in the ass.
"Actually, she's here to help." Sebastien announced.
Everyone at the site stopped what they were doing and then all eyes were on me. I shrinked further into the red cloak, hating the attention. We all pairs of eyes staring me down and probably judging me already. I hated looks back at earth before and after my life went to complete shit.
A laugh broke from Zeynon's lips, which never ceased to irritate me the more. What an asshole." Pardon my rudeness, Miss, but you never cease to shock me! What do you mean help, can you lift a block of rock and fix perfectly into the spot on the wall? I don't think so, now I don't mean to be rude but, it's not an easy work and you could get yourself hurt. I have a daughter your age, I won't want you to go through hard labor, please, you may go."
"I think not." I declared and murmurs broke out. I crossed my hands under the cloak and stared him down too. I wasn't leaving.
Zeynon stared sown at me in disbelief. His eyes looked warm and cold, cheeks covered in a few dark freckles and his short brown hair waving in the wind. He looked fatherly, not that he was denying the fact that he was a father. He did have a daughter after all. He let out a sigh and bent to the ground to heave up an extremely big and heavy looking stone." If you can carry this, then you would be able to work."
"Old man Zeynon, give the lady a break yeah?" A man gave a hasty worried complaint when he stared at the boulder in his hands." Not even Semier can carry that."
"Nahlot!" Semier cursed in Vladimir, a blush adorning his dirt stained cheeks.
"If she wants to help she should show her capability!" Zeynon declared and everyone went silent." People have gotten hurt during the labor here due to sometimes the heat, overworking and simple incident that leads to serious injuries, I'm not about to let a woman–"
" Cerulean, can you lend me your strength?." I spoke out loudly interrupting his speech. With pleasure, Cerulean grunted through the mind link and morphed into his deity form right in front of the people. The moment he did that and walked up right behind me I could feel a surge of almost superhuman strength–that is if that was how superhuman strength felt like– and pulled the boulder from his hand.
A clamor broke out and Zeynon was left standing speechless, his eyes darted from me to Cerulean a couple of times.
Shit!... Is that a lightening cat?.... It's a blue one too.... She's that powerful... Lucky her... How did she get that daemon.... Astonishing.... Whoa...
Was all that came after my little show. This was risky, I knew, the news of a traveller having at blue lightening cat was enough to put me in serious peril. But at the moment, I couldn't give a rats ass. I was so determined to prove myself, and I did.
"Is this enough for you?" I asked dropping the stone down to the ground carelessly. I honestly didn't feel any pain or discomfort holding it. It wasn't like the surge of Cerulean's strength made it as light as feather, I definitely felt the heavy weight of the boulder, it however was pretty bearable. Like carrying three heavy bags of groceries at the same time.
"Y-you have a lightening tiger!" He stuttered.
A triumphant smile curved on my lips." I noticed."
He stared up at Cerulean for a while, blue eyes going in a daze. The others had moved closer to look at Cerulean in amazement and adoration too, and to my surprise he didn't feel the least peeved by their sudden interest and awe. He felt shy. I smiled, how cute.
Finally, a huff left Zeynon as he smiled." I don't still like the fact you want to pass your time here, despite the insane strength you daemon lends you there is still vulnerability to injuries. However, I'll let you help since I can't get rid of you. I can't even get rid of my daughter! "
I smiled.
" You can work here if you like. Just be careful." I nodded at his words, he nodded back in acknowledgment." Right, Sebastien and Semier will see to you off to your station. Welcome to the team, Kylexisis River of Dakota! "
**********
It was late noon when the whole crew took a break and women from the villages arrived with basket of food for their sons, husbands, and siblings. Many looked at my appearance quite weirdly, like why in the world would a woman be working in a dirty environment with no more than harsh sun. I bet they thought I could get burned easily. I wouldn't blame them for their absurd looks, I knew that at the moment they laid their eyes on me I didn't look much like a woman, my dress was stained with dirt and and my hands were covered with wet soil. My nails weren't spared the same fate too. But I didn't hate it, the feeling of the dirt on my hands. I liked the feel of it, the feel of nature on my skin. I was a fae and Elvin, half breed of the two yes but..... both of them nonetheless.
Arya and Eydis arrived with both Sebastien's and my lunch. It was carefully placed in a wooden straw basket and wrapped in white cloth. Two skin bags of water was right beside it and a small bunch of grapes. Eydis looked at my hands worriedly, and even went as far as to washing them for me with a rant of how I was not meant to callous my soft palm with pointless labour. It took both Sebastien's and my assurance with a good solid ten minutes to calm her down and make her leave. Arya however was quite supportive.
"Eydis was a bit much." I said suddenly popping some grapes in my mouth after eating my vegetable sandwich.
Sebastien chuckled taking a swig of the water from the skin bag." You're a girl, it's what you'd expect. Didn't you see the women looking at you?"
"Hmm, I did. But I didn't care much." I shrugged.
"As expected." He pointed out taking his bag to pull out a black pouch from it. I watched him interestedly as he turned the bags upside down to let eight shiny pebbles fall onto the palm of his hands. He went on to spread them in a straight line before me. There was red, two different shades of blue, gold, black, grey, reddish brown and ash. After he was finished with laying out the stone he looked up at me, placing his hands on this thighs after crisscrossing his legs.
"These are the magik stones." He began to explain." We have red for fire, icy blue for water, reddish brown for earth, grey for air, ash for mind, cerulean blue for lightening, gold for spirit and black for dark. You will pick each and everyone of them, anyone that glows dictates your affinity. Are you ready? "
Looking back at the other workers, I noticed Sebastien had sat us very far away from the others where their eyes couldn't see. It was a good thing, you could never trust anyone. I just hoped I could trust Sebastien and his family.
"Nervous?" Sebastien chuckled tilting his head so he could meet my eyes." Don't be, what ever affinity you happen to have the Broywns will always be by your side."
I smiled at him. A happy fluttering feeling filling me, a whole support in which i didn't have before and I couldn't completely find back on earth. Taking in a deep breath, I stretched my hands forward to take the red stone, but the moment my hands came within a seven inch distance with the row of stones all of them glowed brightly at once.
They didn't pulse, nor did they even have the chance for the glow to grow higher before all seven of the stones cracked and split into two, the glow immediately diminishing.
The look on Sebastien's face was priceless, his face pale, his hazel eyes wide in shock and his fingers trembling. His shaken eyes looked up at me with so much emotions and questions swimming through them. Shock, surprise, amazement, awe....
Not knowing what to do I put my hands together and fixed him with a wide smile." Surprise!" I cheered.
