Evolving for a mission

Drax's POV.

START OF ARC 4- This is the last arc of this volume.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Gale hurry!!!" It's only been a few seconds since Gale and Drax had started to run towards the direction of the scream, but he was already getting a terrible feeling. Pushing his body to go faster, Drax ignored the burning pain if his lungs forced his body to keep up his current speech. Turning around a tree, Drax's paws slid across the ground as his foot stepped in a large puddle of mudd. Steadying his body, Drax was about to resume running whenever a loud roar stopped hum in his tracks.

"GWARGAGAGOOOAR!!!!!!!!!"

Coming to a sudden stop, Drax flattened his ears against his head as he waited for the roar to end.

[[[A mission has been issued]]]

[[[Mission title: It's Hero Time]]]

[[[Mission details: Someone is in danger and a fierce roar has swept through the forest. Find out who is in danger and save them from the unknown assailant]]]

[[[Objectives added:]]]

[[[Main objectives]]]

1. Rescue the assaulted person or group

2. Escape with minor injuries

[[[Secondary objectives]]]

1. Steel the fruit of the unknown assailant

2. Defeat the unknown assailant

[[[Objective reward details (SYSTEM NOTE: This will be the only time this shows up so read carefully Drax)]]]

Rewards will be given based on the objective that has been completed. If all objectives are completed, then all rewards will be given automatically. If all rewards are taken, but there are still some mission objectives left, then more rewards will be calculated based on Host's performance after mission completion. If all or some objectives are completed, but the mission has failed, all rewards will be taken away as compensation. The mission will only fail if all main objectives are not completed.]]]

[[[Mission rewards: System update, Monster contract, Monster contract knowledge, random magic ability]]]

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As the roar ended Drax unflattened his ears as he opened up his eyes which he had subconsciously closed. Seeing the mission that stood In front of his eyes, Drax couldn't help but let an excited smile crawl onto his face. (In light novels, getting a mission from the system usually meant that the task was probably going to be incredibly difficult. And as far as I can tell, the sudden appearance of a mission means the same for this system as well. But I had already decided that I was going to go after whoever screamed and since the job is no longer going to be done for free then at least I will be able to harden my resolve.) Thought Drax.

Bunching up his legs, Drax let out a growl as he propelled himself forward. Not waiting to see if Gale followed, Drax continued to head towards the direction that the scream had come from. "Clang clang ding clang dung." Hearing the sounds of metal clashing, Drax tried his best to speed up his movement speed only to notice one thing. (Hey system, why the heck am I slower than before? Wait, now that I think about it, I was able to dodge a few of the Kelo-viles attacks, and it was an S-Ranked Monster. And yet, I wasn't even able to dodge most of the attacks from the Blue Blizzard Snake, and it was only C-Ranked. System, why do I seem to be getting slower?")

[[[The reason you are getting slower is that you have not evolved]]]

(Not evolved? What do you mean?)

[[[Whenever a monster has reached its top level, a chemical mutation on a molecular level starts to happen in the chromosomes of the monster's DNA. This mutation changes the cells at a rapid rate. This rapid change produces energy that covers the cells of the monster at an exceedingly quick pace. Once all the cells are charged, the excess energy is used to start the process of evolution to help the monster evolve into a more superior race, which is why a monster's evolution usually happens straight away. However, for you, this process has been stalled.]]

(…. English, please)

[[[It's like a reptile that needs to shed. If the reptile's skin is too tight, then the lizard's body will have trouble moving. In the worst-case scenario, the reptile dies, in the best case, the skin eventually comes off but with greater pain.]]]

(Oh I get it, since I've reached the level cap but haven't evolved then my body is starting to slow down…. Well shit. Hey system, how long will it take me to evolve?)

[[[Calculating…. The host should be able to evolve in the time span of five minutes]]]

(Seriously? But I thought evolution would take longer?)

[[[This is not like a light novel Host. Whenever a monster evolves, every cell and atom in its body goes through a chemical mutation all at the same time. Any excess energy not needed is used to accelerate this process, making a monster's evolution take at most a full hour, that is of course excluding the appearance of any outside factors. However, a monster going through evolution will be covered by a chrysalis during the process and will be momentarily immobilized. This is to keep the monster from making any motion that might stall the evolution. But again, the chrysalis, as well as the evolution only lasts for at most one hour]]]

Continuing to run while reading the messages, Drax was momentarily distracted as he noticed that the sounds of battle coming up ahead had started to get quieter. "Ding, din, di,d." Making a split decision, Drax said, "System I wish to evolve, please show me my evolution choices." As the words left his mouth, Drax felt his eyes widen as the world seemed to slow down around him. (Hey system, what's going on?)

[[[The system has speeded up host's thought process to an astronomical degree, so host can have more time to think and choose Host's evolution.]]]

(Oh..... well, in that case, sorry for the interruption, please carry on)

[[[Calculating Hosts Choices…. Processing… Now Showing Evolution Paths]]]

As the system's voice finished talking through Drax's head, a list of choices as well as a 3D image of each choice appeared In front of his vision.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Path 1: Loyal ghost fox-- A monster closely related to the ghost fox and unbound ghost races. Unlike the ghost fox and unbound ghost races, this particular monster has the capability to make itself solid without any outside interference needed. Mischievous and crafty, travelers often only see them as a nuisance, even though they don't really cause any harm. They like to play tricks on travelers and steal food whenever they can. But, unknown to all, hidden behind its fluffy pelt lies the heart of a Knight. For the one lucky enough to claim its heart and loyalty, this creature will do anything to make that person or monster happy and above all, keep them safe.

Has a high affinity with light and dark magic as well as earth

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Path 2: Ectoplasmic fox-- A fox with an abnormal ability to mold its soul. Unlike the ghost fox and unbound ghost races, this particular monster has the capability to make itself solid without any outside interference needed. It is often calm and collective. The downside is that most of these species are over the top battle maniac's. Most of this race are muscle heads and their intelligence is minimal.

Has supernatural strength and speed, but is not overly good with magic of any kind except for strengthening magic.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Path 3: Big eyed Fox-- The runt of the fox race. With a length of 2 feet (ca. 61 cm) (counting its tail) and being only a half foot tall, this fox is oftentimes underestimated. However, this is a grave mistake because this fox, unlike most of its distant relative's, has the ability to slightly influence the mind of anyone around it. Using the appearance of its body and eyes as well as its mind ability, this monster often gets whatever it wants, making most of its race highly spoiled. Unlike the ghost fox and unbound ghost races, this particular monster has the capability to make itself solid without any outside interference needed.

Has a strong affinity with mind related abilities, while also being great with magic involving the mind. It is extremely fast while also intelligent. However, It is not good whenever it comes to physical strength.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

((Eh?. What is with the third option's picture, it's so CUTE!!!)

Ignoring the other two options, Drax looked at the third option where a picture of a tiny fox stood. Just like the description said, it looked to be quite small. Its fur was a bright blue color and gleamed in the fake sunlight that was projected in the 3D picture. Its fur was poofed out like it had just been dried off by a hair dryer. Swirling behind the fox were two small fox tails that were constantly waving behind it while letting off some kind of weird purple energy.

And although the fox tails were very noticeable they couldn't even compare to its eyes. (Holy crap, those eyes are huge!!!) And they were indeed. Standing on top of the foxe's face were two big eyes that took up the majority of its face while barely leaving any room for its black heart shaped nose and whiskers, or its tiny mouth that had a small tooth poking out of the top left side of its mouth.

(Forget choosing the choice with the strongest evolutionary path, I want the cutest. System, I choose the Big Eyed Fox.)

[[[Host has chosen his evolutionary path-Starting evolution.....new variable has been found. Host, you seem to have one evolutionary item in your inventory as well as a few other items that might help in your evolution. Would you like to use these items right now and combine it with your evolutionary choice? This would result in you evolving into a stronger variants of the Big Eyed Fox.]]]

(Will the evolution be cuter?)

[[[.... Host has been deemed to not be in the correct state of mind and as such the system has decided to combine the items with the current evolution for a stronger variant so that the host has a better chance of survival…. Starting the process of combining the items with the evolution choice…. successful. System has decided to unlock the host reward "Innate ability unlocking key x1" and "10,000" exp for early access to important skills... Using items now.... Successful. Now starting evolution…. Successful, evolution has begun.]]]

Not even having time to cuss out the system, Drax was almost instantly enveloped by a glowing purple chrysalis as his evolution started.

(Author note: Secondary objectives are the optional objectives. Drax doesn't have to do them if he doesn't want to but he would lose some of the rewards that he is able to obtain by doing so.)
