"So what exactly is our job? You have yet to tell me this! I've been simply following you for the past hour out of the town and you haven't spoken a word as to what we are even doing." Vorbuk growled up at Leo as he wanted to know where they were going.
"Oh, well I picked up a job that is to simply slay a monster in the area that has been attacking the merchants that try to travel around the area!" Leo smiled wryly at the wolf.
"So basically you're expecting me to help you kill an evil beast?" He growled at him even more annoyed.
"Hey! Don't growl so much! I'm sure you can handle it..." he scratched the back of his head as he kept on walking. A nervous laugh escaped him as he felt the pressure from Vorbuk's aura and felt like he would be smashed by the shear power of how annoyed the wolf was with him.
"So what is it? A goblin? demon? what? Can I at least know what you're expecting me to kill for you here?"
"It's a Cambion..." Leo tried to hide his face in his hand as he spoke, nervous of how the wolf would react to him naming what the beast was.
"I don't know what that is..." The wolf sighed as it shook it's head.
"It's a creature that is half human and half demon or succubus. They could be either of the two, that had bred with a human. The thing has been apparently causing trouble in the area and a request was placed in the guild for someone to slay it."
"You expect me to slay a demon?!" Vorbuk jumped to the side in surprise that Leo would even suggest such a thing so early. He was still getting use to controlling his own abilities and body. He had only fought goblins and the elf warriors so far since he had came to this world. He was not sure if he could kill such a beast as a half demon yet!
"I will help you! We're both going to fight together to deal with this thing, obviously. I don't expect you to do all the work just help me deal with it."
"If I die i'm going to haunt you til you die! Then I will haunt your children! Then your children's children!" The wolf growled and huffed at him.
"I get it already! Let's go!" He put his hands up to try and convince the wolf to stop and calm down.
Vorbuk was very annoyed with Leo for rushing on the decision to hunt a cambion so soon without confronting him beforehand so for the rest of their journey to find the demon was in pure silence. He had no urge to speak to the man until he could calm his own nerves down. If he was to speak til they got there he was worried his wolf instincts may just cause him to kill the man instead and run far away from the area to avoid getting killed by a demon!
When they reached their destination he watched as the prince walked around checking the area for clues as to which direction the demon could have gone. There was a fresh body of a merchant's corpse where the demon had just moments earlier killed the merchant and fled the area. He could not help but feel like the demon had probably sensed them coming and fled before it could get caught in the act.
"I think it's on guard against us. I have a feeling it felt us coming here." Leo said as he was examining the corpse carefully.
"Yes, I was thinking the same thing too..." he sighed as he carefully tried to listen to the surroundings for any sign of the creature trying to flee. He couldn't hear anything, but there was a heaviness in the air that made him uneasy.
"If it's a demon it could easily be watching us without us being aware, they are tricky and have many ways to hide their presence from being spotted. It's natural for them." Leo said as he watched the wolf trying to listen in to spot the demon.
He could see the wolf had no intention to listen to his advice, however, and shrugged it off as he continued to look around the area. Something about the merchant corpse was bothering him so he couldn't stop observing it, feeling like something more serious had happened here. Lowering himself he searched the merchant for clues or details that could help him figure out more about the situation. After a few moments of searching he found an unopened letter the merchant had been carrying in his pocket.
There was no letter on the envelope, so it had to be the merchants or for someone the merchant was asked to specifically deliver without giving away the sender's identification. He pondered over his thoughts for a moment before opening the envelope. He could hear the footsteps of the wolf walking over to him from behind as he pulled the letter out to read it. The details of the letter was not something he was expecting to find on a local merchant.
"My Dearest Amra,
I am sending you this letter because they are coming for me soon. I have no way to escape what fate is going to befall me in these times. The realm is going to fall into disaster very soon and I hope that you can escape what will happen in the future, but I know how stubborn you can be and that you will probably stay and try to help fight off what is coming to pass. You must understand, however, that fate is not something that can be easily changed. The Ice Queen Lyra here in Ethiadan is becoming darker as days pass and I know soon they will ruin the land you call home. They have caught on to the fact that I have hidden myself inside their kingdom and will surely be here to end my life and soon will be coming for you as well. I am writing this to ask you to run before it is too late, but I know you well that you wont listen. I can not help but to try and suggest it, however. I plan to try and run myself, but being deep within the kingdom of Ethiadan, I fear this is the last words you will be hearing from me. Live well to the best you can, Amra. My final task I have for you is to let the royal family know that my position has been compromised. Then run! Please, run!
~ Elred"
"Looks like the merchant was tasked to carry a letter to the king that one of his internal spies had been caught..." Leo contemplated for a moment then stashed the letter away in his bracelet before standing up to glance around the area.
