The atmosphere at the gates of Konoha was electric, almost palpable, as the delegation from different villages began to appear on the horizon. The sun was setting, casting a golden-orange hue that imbued the air with a sense of warmth and tranquility. A light breeze swirled through the trees, carrying the fragrance of fresh earth and blooming flowers. Residents had started gathering, their eyes filled with a mixture of curiosity and respect, as they awaited the arrival of their esteemed guests.
Their interaction was cut by the arrival of the last party. From afar, the unmistakable figure of A, with several Jounin, Naruto, and Gaara soon appeared on the horizon. The setting sun bathed them in an orange glow, making the group look almost ethereal. Alongside them, the silver-haired Kakashi, Naruto's guardian in Cloud, and Baki, Gaara's mentor, could be seen.
Naruto, his blond hair a stark contrast to the muted colors around him, bounded forward with boundless energy as soon as the gates of Konoha came into view. He dashed in excitement, and without hesitation, jumped onto the Third Hokage, wrapping his arms around the older man.
"Grandpa Hokage! I missed you!" he exclaimed, his blue eyes shining with youthful joy. As Naruto hugged the older man, his mind drifted back to his time in Cloud Village. Unlike Konoha, where stares and whispers often followed him, Cloud offered him a different kind of space. There, bonds weren't just about friendship or kinship; they were layered, complex, and multifaceted. It was in Cloud that he came to understand how much the Third Hokage truly cared for him, not just as a village leader but almost like a grandfather. It made this hug, this moment, all the more precious to him.
Hiruzen chuckled, embracing the young boy. "And I missed you too, Naruto," he responded, his voice tender. "I'm glad to see you safe and well."
As Naruto disengaged from the hug with Grandpa Hokage, he felt a gentle tap on his shoulder. Turning around, he was met with Gaara's softer, thoughtful eyes. "Naruto, it's good to see you back where you belong," Gaara said, a small smile crossing his features.
"Hey, Gaara!" Naruto beamed, thrilled to see his friend. "Training with you and B in Cloud was awesome! I learned so much!"
"The feeling is mutual," Gaara replied, his eyes expressing a warmth that was once foreign to them. "You've also taught me the importance of bonds, something I will carry with me always."
Kakashi arrived next, an amused look hidden beneath his mask. "Always the bundle of energy," he remarked, offering a respectful bow to the Hokage. "My apologies, Hokage-sama, for not curbing his enthusiasm."
Sarutobi waved off the apology with a smile, "That's what makes him Naruto. I wouldn't have it any other way."
"Hey, you're Ryomaru, right?" Naruto bounded over to the stoic youth, his blue eyes shimmering with gratitude. "I heard from B that you're the genius behind the Student Exchange program!"
Ryomaru looked at Naruto, intrigued by his boundless energy yet touched by his sincerity. "Yes, that was my proposal," he admitted. "But it wouldn't have been successful without willing participants."
"Well, I gotta say thanks!" Naruto's voice was full of earnestness. "You have no idea how much I learned in Cloud. I owe you one!"
Ryomaru's ice-blue eyes met Naruto's. "You don't owe me anything, Naruto. We both gained something invaluable from the exchange, something that goes beyond techniques or skills."
Rasa's gaze was fixed on Baki and Gaara as they approached. Gaara, with his iconic gourd on his back, walked with a certain grace, his once fierce, cold eyes now softer, showing hints of change and understanding. Baki nodded to the Kazekage as they reached him.
As Gaara approached his father, memories flashed through his mind—lonely nights, pain-filled days, and the sad realization that the man before him was more Kazekage than father. But time in Cloud, training with B, had given him a new perspective. While Rasa might have failed as a father, he had his reasons as a leader. Gaara felt the hate dissipate, replaced by a nuanced understanding. Love was still absent, but so was blind hatred.
"Kazekage-sama," Gaara began, his voice carrying a hint of nervousness. "My training in Cloud was... enlightening. I'm grateful for the opportunity."
Rasa, ever the stoic leader, gave a nod of acknowledgment, but the barest hint of a smile betrayed his pride in his son. "Your growth is evident, Gaara. I expect to hear more of your progress."
A now stood at the forefront, his immense stature and formidable presence demanding immediate attention. Without a word, he moved directly to Ryomaru's side, his piercing gaze checking him up and down. Though A's face was a mask of stoicism, the glint in his eyes betrayed unmistakable pride.
Ryomaru met the Raikage's gaze unflinchingly. "Raikage-sama," he greeted, giving a respectful nod.
A's deep voice rumbled, "Ryomaru, you've grown. You have not wasted your time in here."
Ryomaru replied confidently, "I learn and grow. That was always my purpose, Raikage-sama."
A smirked, clearly appreciating the response. "That's the spirit. Remember, wherever you are, you represent the Cloud."
Their interaction held a certain distance, a juxtaposition of respect and an underlying tension. Yet, there was no denying the pride A felt towards his son.
A and Rasa shared a brief, uneasy glance. "Did you feel it?" A whispered, his eyes narrowed. "It felt like we were being watched."
"I felt it too," Rasa confirmed. "An unsettling presence."
Hiruzen overheard and nodded gravely. "I'll send our best spies to investigate. We can't afford to ignore this."
The conversation shifted back to diplomacy and alliances, but the uneasy feeling lingered, like a cloud casting a shadow over the day's events.
Others also greeted each other, engaging in conversations and exchanging pleasantries. The Kages began speaking to one another, discussing the state of their villages and the relations between them. The discussions were brief and respectful, touching on various topics relevant to the current era of peace.
Ryomaru walked with Raikage to his house, at the other side of the village where he and Miori had been staying since he asked Kurenai and Anko to arrange as such. The walk was quiet but comfortable, Ryomaru's ice-blue eyes flickering towards A occasionally. He was his father, after all, but the relationship had always been more of respectful distance than warmth.
"Samui, Mabui," the Raikage addressed without preamble, "Report."
Samui, always the epitome of poise, spoke first. "Raikage-sama, Ryomaru has been exemplary during his time at the Academy here. His discipline and diligence were evident. He formed strong bonds with many here."
Mabui continued, "Including the Hyuga princesses and Temari. His interactions with them were not just about combat training but also exchanging cultural knowledge."
Ryomaru rolled his eyes slightly, amused by the Raikage's impatience. But he noticed that Samui and Mabui had left out certain details – small acts of mischief, the lighter moments of his time in Konoha. The subtle omission warmed his heart, a reminder of their shared bond and understanding.
Raikage's piercing gaze then shifted to Darui. "And the Chunin Exams?"
Darui cleared his throat, choosing his words carefully. "The initial rounds were intense, Raikage-sama. Many genin showcased impressive skills. Naruto's growth, in particular, caught many by surprise. His time in Cloud has clearly benefited him. Shikamaru, too, displayed a strategic acumen that left many awestruck."
The Raikage simply nodded, processing the information. His gaze turned back to Ryomaru. "It's crucial to keep learning and adapting. This world is in a state of flux, and as my son, you're a crucial part of the Cloud's future."
Ryomaru nodded, his ice-blue eyes meeting the Raikage's unwavering gaze. "Understood, Raikage-sama. Every experience here adds to my perspective."
The Raikage's gaze softened just a fraction, an acknowledgment of Ryomaru's maturity. "Good. Remember, your actions represent not just yourself but the Cloud Village and our entire lineage."
Ryomaru responded, "Every day, Raikage-sama."
The Raikage then retired to his quarters, leaving Ryomaru alone in the living room. He let out a soft sigh, the weight of the day's events pressing on him. He loved Konoha for its vibrancy and the friendships he forged, but the expectations of his heritage, the shadow of his father's presence, always loomed large.
