Chapter 35 - Planting Doubts (2)

Although the twisted girl spoke about showing mercy, she was the one who actually needed it. Just a little stronger than normal Grade-1 curses, she was no match for Nanami's group. That said, she still could use regeneration like a curse, taking the group longer than they should.

"She's clearly not that strong yet that stamina and regeneration is a bit too much for a Grade-1."

Not long after that, she was already at her limits as the cursed energy ran out. When that happened, she was pushed into a curse, resulting in getting exorcised right there.

Yet, the body didn't disappear.

Seeing the body was not disappearing, Namami couldn't help but frown.

"Was she a human all this time?"

Ieiri stood in front of the body, examining her while the group waited on the side. After taking a while, Ieiri spoke, "Strange. You said she was the girl who jumped from the rooftop six months ago. But, this body is a freshly dead one, a bit modified I would say. It doesn't resemble the curses yet as you said, she was modified to carry out some things only curses could do. Like regeneration ,for example."

"Just who in the world did that?" Itadori mumbled.

"Yes, it's not like someone could've survived the fall and she was a normal girl who was bullied before her death. Unless someone did that, she would've just died instead of turning into this." Nanami said. He had Ijichi investigate the girl's story while waiting for Ieiri and that was what he found.

"So, could it be that it happenned after she tried to jump? But if she jumped, she wouldn't survive and Ieiri san just said her body was that of a freshly dead human body so something doesn't add up. You can't just resurrect a dead, right?" Nobara asked.

"That's what I am thinking too." Megumi admitted.

"She could very well be a test subject or a beta version. Who knows?" Ieiri took off her gloves and discarded them.

"I don't know well but isn't this like showing one's cards beforehand? I mean if it's what you like and the enemy was really testing to mix human and curses." Itadori scratched his head.

"It's hard to tell their motive. Based on what the girl said, one of the people behind her is a female and she might know us personally or had a reason herself to not kill us. Yet, that girl still fought with us and tried to kill us herself." Nanami sighed.

"We still don't know which part of her story is true. Maybe it was all the truth or she just made up things." Nanami continued.

"It would be concerning if that person personally knew us." Megumi muttered. He couldn't shake off a feeling that he indeed knew the person behind this incident and it was all an intentional setup to make them meet the girl.

"But that's not possible, is it?" Itadori asked, not wanting to think someone he knew was involved.

"If it was, who do you think it could be?"

Megumi asked quietly.

"Depends on what kind of relationship she has with us. Is it a teacher or an senior? Or maybe even a classmate?" Only after saying that, Nobara widened her eyes. "No way!"

"What?" Itadori didn't catch on in time.

"That unreliable classmate of ours." Nobara told him with a sigh.

"Nakamura? You mean Nakamura?!"

"Yeah, think about it. She's the strongest student we have met, and she's our classmate so it kinda suits the description. Didn't she also say her cursed technique revolves around possibilities? Think of what you can do with that."

"You know it can't be true right? I mean you can't just trust what that curse said and doubt your own classmate." Itadori reasoned.

"Of course I know that. I just meant she could also be a suspect not that I actually think she is. Still, it might be related to her somehow even if she wasn't the only who's actively involved."

"Like that group who targeted her at the Goodwill event?"

"Yeah."

"Actually, I think she was acting a bit suspicious these days but if anything, Gojo sensei would know it before us." Megumi said after thinking for a while.

"Right." Nobara nodded. With how much time Sachiko was spending with Gojo lately, she found it was needless for her to worry. As Megumi said, if she was truly involved, Gojo would've noticed and dealt with it.

"Still, it frustrates me. What the heck did she want?" Nobara gritted her teeth in frustration upon not learning the girl's true intention.

"Maybe they just want to make us doubt her." Itadori assumed.

"Maybe." Megumi said.

"Let's just report this incident to higher-ups first. Even if this incident is solved, this might just be the beginning." Nanami said. He himself had some suspiscions but now was not time to say anything. Not without concrete evidence, he wouldn't and couldn't say anything.

Ieiri just looked at them from the side with a nonchalant expression.

A cloaked figure returned to a rundown apartment just after the incident happened. Upon opening the door, she was faced by a certain curse user with stiches on his forehead.

"Geto, what brings you here?"

"Why did you do that? Now, you're putting us in a difficult position by alarming them on your tests."

"Oh, that?" She laughed, then looked at Geto in the eyes, "Calm down, I thought you changed your mind about that Nakamura. Don't you want to recruit her? I'm just helping you out. Is there even a need to be serious like this?"

"I don't ever recall I said anything about wanting your help in this matter, especially in ones like this." Geto firmly said.

"Hm? Is that so? Fine then." She laughed playfully then added, "Oh, right. You don't need to worry about the test subject. It didn't mean anything to me anyway."

"I didn't say I was worried about it. I'm just concerned that this would put up their guards. That's all."

"Why are you like this? Aren't you being too cruel?" She made a sad face.

Geto didn't like her guts in the slightest. Yet, he had chose to cooperate with her six months ago for his own reasons. As long as he could benefit in the end, it didn't matter if this woman get on his nerves sometimes. He could always end her life after he achieved his goals. That was what he thought.
