Reborn as a Goblin - Road to Mastery

"Why the hell would you ask such a stupid question? That's like asking why the sky is blue or why trees burn. To comprehend the Dao would be to comprehend everything, and that comprehension would merely be a part of the Dao. The Dao is everything, and everything is the Dao. Stop asking stupid questions." ... Trace was a college student barely scraping by. His only good talent was his abnormal ability to fight. Not that fighting helps pay the bills. After he died, he woke up in a world of magic and monsters, with unfathomable beings of power all under the Supreme Dao. And he wakes up in the middle of the forest, in the scrawny body of a short goblin. How will he survive in this world, where a random passerby could hold the power of a god? ... I'm a Goblin?

Trace awoke after a brief bout of darkness.

What met him was a clear blue sky- impossibly blue, like an ocean. Followed by three suns, each one bearing down on him.

Three suns?

Trace's eyes widened. Where was he? He must be seeing things. He could feel himself lying on a soft patch of grass, the blades poking his body. Odd.

He entered into a sitting position, only to see an even more wondrous sight.

Giant trees resembling oak trees towered above him, possibly for 50 feet. They also had large trunks, turning into the largest trees Trace had ever seen. But that was only the smallest of them. The biggest was easily over a hundred meters.

Not only that, but their leaves were golden in color, making the trees emit a much more divine aura. Trace had never seen these kinds of trees before. Where was he?

Trace looked down at his hands, only to find that his skin was green.

Not the sort of paint green, or sickly green, but his hand was fully a dark green. Along with his arms, which seemed shorter and a lot more skinnier. Trace looked further down at his stick-like legs, and the slight pudge of his green belly.

"WHAT THE FUCK?!" Trace roared. His voice came out squeaky and tiny, and he had a weird accent that he couldn't place. With trembling hands, Trace pushed himself off the floor, only to realize that he felt shorter, somehow. His fears were realized when he felt his ears and instead found elongated ones, sharp and pointy.

"No, no, no..." Trace muttered, looking down at his hands again. What kind of fucked up fever dream was this? Trace looked further down, only to find that his little brother wasn't all that impressive either.

What had he been watching to have this sort of dream? He was a naked goblin-like monstrosity in an overgrown, deathly silent forest. He didn't have time for this. He needed to wake up.

[Integration complete. Evaluation serializing...]

Trace stared at the holographic screen in front of him for a few seconds. He chuckled, which started to turn into a full-blown laugh.

"Haha! I must be going insane. Well, this is a fun dream, even if I have to wake up early for work." He wryly smiled, before a second screen joined the first. And then a third screen. And a fourth.

[Evaluation complete.]

[Planet: Peak D-Grade. Calibration: S-Grade(serializing...). Potential: S-Grade.]

[Calibration complete.]

Suddenly, it was like everything snapped into place, as if he was outside of the universe before, and he stepped back into it. Trace felt the breeze against his skin, and the trees swayed. But most importantly, the deathly silent forest was not so silent anymore.

Roars of dangerous beasts could be heard, roars that seemed would split the sky in two and made Trace shiver. Suddenly, he no longer felt as safe.

[Please mentally focus on the words 'status screen' to view your status screen.]

Status screens? S-Grade evaluations? What a fun dream, even though I'm in an ugly body.  Before doing anything though, Trace frowned at the screens. It was getting too crowded. The screens obeyed, and they all vanished as if they had never been there.

Neat.

Trace focused on the words 'status screen', and thankfully, another screen appeared.

Trace whistled, pleasantly surprised. His dream had given him an RPG-like system. Most things could be explained, but some he was unsure of. What was a Dao? He was sure he'd heard of it before. Didn't it have Chinese origins?

And what was his alignment? Were they just fancy words created by the recesses of his mind?

Hey System, help me out. Trace tried, on a whim. To his surprise, the System replied.

Suddenly, a heavy pressure descended on him. Trace widened his eyes in fear- he could feel the vast indifference in that presence. The aura was so high that Trace was sure that it was simply a corner of it- otherwise, he would've been turned to dust a million times over.

It was still a dream, Trace reminded himself.

The Dao is the building block of all things. This planet is filled to the brim with the Dao, but this sector holds sullied Worldly Dao.

The voice held no emotion and sounded completely androgynous. Was he speaking directly with the System?

Sector? What do you mean?

However, the System ignored him and answered his previous question.

Alignment displays the force, the planet, and in the future, the sector you belong to. It is rare for a beast to have this unless they are humanoid enough to disguise as cultivators. Goodbye.

Trace's eyes narrowed at the valuable tidbits of information the System had given him and stored it away for later. But unfortunately, the pressure on him disappeared as the System said goodbye.

Wait, come back!

However, it seemed like the System was serious, as it didn't respond no matter how many times Trace pleaded. The System was gone.

Trace sighed. "Well, shit. I'm starting to feel like this isn't a dream." He said, flinching as another roar echoed through the area.

Trace inwardly knew it was true. Everything was simply too realistic, pointing to him really being transported to another world, in another body. He hadn't wanted to believe it. He was in the body of an ugly goblin, in a dangerous forest, all thanks to an unfeeling System.

But still, wasn't this better than having to struggle every day for money?

Trace looked down at his hands. He had no one tying him home, he understood. Trace imagined leveling up, becoming stronger, and slowly climbing up the ranks.

Is this why he felt so free?

However, a slight shuffling sound echoed from within the bushes. Trace frowned and spun around, annoyed at how sluggish his body felt.

Staring at him was a thing unlike anything he had ever seen before, truly worthy of being called a monster.

...

Alvod narrowly avoided the bolt of System lightning that arced through the air to strike him, powerful enough to destroy planets. He frowned as the purple lightning flashed angrily, the Heavens seemingly annoyed.

He snorted. Ever since becoming an A-Grade Emperor, he'd been actively hunted by the System more and more, forcing him to hide from the heavens. Annoyingly, he was still stuck in the early stages of the A-Grade.

His B-Grade sword,  [Hunger], keened as he absentmindedly swung it into a stray purple lightning bolt. The seemingly lazy swing had the force of a world behind it, sending the lightning towards a stray comet.

Alvod flew through space at a breakneck speed, crossing light-years in an instant, but the Heavens weren't willing to give up so easily.

Alvod found that [Hunger]  was struggling to keep up since his ascent, so, in a mad gamble to evolve his Spirit Tool, he had stolen the  [Calamity Crystal].

Alvod sighed as he avoided another bolt, knowing that retreating to his Inner World wouldn't work. He couldn't jeopardize the safety of the trillions of people who happily lived inside.

However, something odd happened. He felt the System's presence retract, along with the Old Heavens, for a few seconds, giving Alvod the time he needed to tear open a hole into the Void.

Alvod entered the hole a moment later, greeted by darkness. The Void was a place where the Dao of Space held no sway- distance didn't apply here. Alvod could feel the anger of the Heavens return, but he closed the portal before a bolt could enter, severing the connection.

Alvod had only ever seen this once- when the System devoted its attention to talk to someone.

Alvod grinned, despite himself, as he opened another portal in the Void. Who had garnered the attention of the System? Perhaps there would be another A-Grade in a few thousand millennia.

Or even an S-Grade King.

Whoever it was, Alvod would have to repay them for saving his hide.
