CHAPTER START---

---4 Days later, Konoha, Hokage's Office...

Kurenai, Hinata, and Shino can be seen standing before the Hokage. The man had just finished reading the mission report and hasn't spoken yet. As he takes another puff of his pipe he forms his words very carefully.

"It would appear that, he sacrificed himself for more than just the mission. But for his teammate. He really was a fine shinobi even in his short time," sigh. "I'll have ANBU investigate this matter, an entire squad of Jounin rogue nin isn't normal by any means. You are all dismissed."

The tears kept flowing from Hinata's eyes, she hasn't stopped crying since entering the office, since having to retell what happened those days ago. Having her friend die for her broke her heart. Her weakness had never felt greater than right now. Not only her friend, the brother of the boy she cherished, 'How do I face Naruto?' she wondered.

While Kurenai hardened her expression before the Hokage and Shino did his best to keep his stoic nature, they were all hurt and cursing their weakness at this moment. They quietly exit the office and Kurenai quickly muttered, "Take the week off" before disappearing in shunshin. (Body flicker)

Appearing at the Nara residence, she found Asuma and his team here as always. She stiffly approached the team sitting on the lawn as they spoke to their sensei. Shikamaru seemed half asleep while Ino actually paid attention and Choji was more interested in his chips.

"Hey Kurenai you're back, how'd the mission go," Asuma asks with a goofy smile on his face.

As everyone turns their attention to her, they see a sad grimace form on her face as she quickly bows before the genin ninja.

"I'm sorry, I couldn't protect him!" She says as they all look at her shocked.

"No, that's impossible," Shikamaru says, being the first to understand what she means.

"What?" Ino asks, completely confused.

"Jin, she, she couldn't save him," Asuma says with a sad look on his face.

As Kurenai rose to look at their faces, to everyone's surprise, the first to have tears falling was Ino. Choji quickly followed while Shikamaru just seemed to freeze.

"I'll take care of them, and we'll talk later Kurenai," Asuma says, prompting her to shunshin away.

Making her way across the village Kurenai quickly arrives at training ground 7 and found Kakashi sparring with his team. Noticing her arrival Kakashi had his team practice on their own as he approached her.

"Yo Kurenai, what's up?" he asks in his casual bored tone.

"I, I need to speak to your team Kakashi," she says in a grim tone.

As if immediately understanding what's wrong Kakashi quickly waves his team over to the treeline to speak to Kurenai. She stood before them for a long while, not even being able to look Naruto in the eye. The boy was essentially Jin's brother and she couldn't protect him. Finally, she gathers her courage to break the boy's heart.

"Jin, Jin's dead," She says as she bows before the team. "I failed as a sensei! I couldn't protect him!"

"..."

For a small pause, nobody speaks. Everyone, especially Kakashi is shocked. For him, Jin dying makes no sense after what he displayed in that spar. For the others, it was their personal relationship or rivalry in Sasuke's case.

"That's. That's not funny sensei. That's not funny, you're joking right. TELL ME YOU'RE JOKING!" Naruto yells at the top of his voice.

As Kurenai lifts her head to meet his eyes. She sees the tears overflowing in them.

"I'm sorry" She barely manages to whisper to them.

"You're supposed to protect your students!" The blonde yells at her before he runs off, tears freely flowing down his face. His first family now dead.

As everyone processes what just happened, Sasuke is the first to speak up.

"How, how did he die?"

"He died to protect his teammate," was all Kurenai said.

Later that night, Ichiraku Ramen was filled with Genin consoling their friends, while the girls found themselves in the Hyuga princesses' room.
