Village Visit

As you've read from the last chapter he still kept his level despite doing a RESET, this is intentional and will be explained in this chapter along with why killing Rem leveled him up despite being stated that everyone gives the same amount of EXP.

Chris could be seen with Rem as they made their way to the village, since Chris wasn't a butler you would assume he wouldn't need to go alone with Rem to get supplies but since he was still living in the manor he still had to help with a few things except cleaning as Emilia's Knight he only needed to protect her and do her bidding.

But the term Knight was quite weird for Chris as in this world there were two types of knights one being actual knighted individuals or people with enough strength to become someone's knight which included Al the knight of Priscilla.

As they made their way to the village the two didn't say anything to each other and the fact that Rem was intentionally avoiding him that she feared him to a certain extent, which was quite obvious to Chris as who wouldn't be afraid of someone who is not only taller than you but defeated you easily in combat.

He was sure that Roswaal was probably looking at his identity right now as he was away from the manor, and he didn't mind as unlike Subaru he actually had a pass in this world.

Soon enough they had arrived at the village without talking to each other so they had went on with their respective task, for Chris he needed to pick up a barrel of meat and a few bags of salt . And since it was only a few weeks till winter he could already guess to what they were gonna do with it.

"Yup that's me the names Chris, here's the payment two gold coins"

Chris handed gold coins towards the old man and then proceeded to carry the barrel with one hand while placing the three small bags of salts in his ITEM box, as his clothes were back at the Mansion he had enough space for a three bags. Seeing his display of strength the kids couldn't help but yell quite loudly in amazement.

"Hohoho, you're quite a strong lad tell me are you a new guard for Lord Roswaal's mansion?"

"You could say that, I'm Lady Emilia's Knight"

"Ho? A knight it must be tough being the Knight of that witch."

Hearing the old man insult Emilia if he was anything like Subaru he would say have said how she was cute, kind, and helped save Old man Rom but Chris wasn't as naive as Subaru who fell in love with the first cute girl who showed him kindness in this world.

He grew up in the slums of the kingdom sure if he was transmigrated at the same time as Subaru while being young and naive he would probably act like him but no, he had not only grown up in the slums but survived that wretched place. He didn't care about Emilia's image or dream as he knew that if this world existed another version of it did, so growing up he didn't have any true attachments as he had plan to leave this world as soon as he had obtain the overwrite button.

Chris began walking away but as he did so he felt something making it's way towards his head, with his right index finger he formed a small red knife before splitting what seemed to be a small rock thrown by one of the kids in half.

Chris placed the barrel down before crouching to be in the same eye level of the children.

As he asked them they all nodded their Heads, the save Button appeared right below Chris's left hand before he lightly tapped it and in what seemed to be an instant five out of the seven children were decapitated, leaving only Petra and Meili alive.

'No EXP from killing those brats.'

Chris's once cheery and smiling expression turned cold as his eyes began gowig red with his trait, he looked at a terrified Petra before moving towards her.

Seeing her friends get killed Petra was about to scream before Red Knife had impaled her through the chest, while Meili dashed away in a speed that didn't quite suite a little girl as multiple Mabeast appeared out of the forest from one single area but they were too late as Chris had now decapitated Meili.

'So I didn't Lvl up but I did gain some EXP, so my hunch was right.'

Chris then proceeded to look at the Mabeast who were charging at him and with an motionless expression multiple flaotigng red knives appeared behind him before they were all launched at them killing all of them, yet they didn't give Chris any EXP.

'So I can only get EXP from people who are important with this worlds original plot.'

Ever since he had reached level 10 he couldn't just farm killing the thugs and people of the slums by saving and resetting over and over, so when he had killed Elsa and leveled up from her he thought that it was something to break his level cap of 10. But after killing Rem and leveling up he had guessed that he could only gain levels from killing someone important that was part of this worlds original story, he needed to test his theory out so he killed petras friends first and gained no EXP but after killing Petra and Meili he gained EXP but didn't level up and killing the Mabeast also didn't give him any EXP.

"MURDERER!!"

The villagers who saw him murder the children in cold blood began screaming and running away, Rem who was nearby heard the commotion and was greeted with the sight of the dead children with blood all over Chris's white cloak. She then charged at him with her pulling out her Morningstar from out of nowhere before launching it towards him, but Chris just dodged her attempt of hurting him before her soul once again appeared above her chest but this time it was being covered by Red strings that came from Chris's finger tips.

"Good bye."

With a pull her very soul was shattered and as she fell limp on the ground, Chris looked at her with his still present emotionless face.

"So no EXP for killing you again huh?"

Chris said to no one specifically before he made the RESET button appear once again but before he did so he turned to direction of the Mansion with his eyes glowing red due to this SOUL trait, and saw Roswaal looking at him from the window with smile while holding what seemed to be a black book. Before waving his hands while mouthing the words 'Farewell'

'Hmm.'

Chris didn't bother looking at him anymore as he slammed his fist on the reset button.

Chris from a young age grew up in the slums of the kingdom, at first he had a very high and happy attitude but as he grew with not only his abilities but with getting used to killing. He began becoming realistic and cold about the true nature of the world.

The kids began waving him good bye as he and Rem made their way back to the Mansion, he waved good bye to the kids while having a huge smile as if he hadn't murdered them in cold blood. But he didn't care as they wouldn't even remember it, over the years of resetting Chris now had a different view on life as what was the point of everything if he could just Reset things back to a specific point.

Why would he need to form bonds when once he obtains the OVERWRITE button he would be gone?, with this mindset Chris saw everything as pointless as the only thing that he needed from this world was EXP.

"You seem quite good with kids"

It was true Chris was good at handling kids a he had practice playing big brother with Plum when he worked at the stand fruit stand back at the capital, of course Chris had no need to say that to Rem to once again he and Rem began their silent walk back to the Mansion.

Hearing Rems question Chris remembered her asking the same thing with Subaru, he wanted to ignore her and just continue with the quiet walk but seeing how this was an opportunity to get closer with her and make her less suspicious of him he decided to go with it.

"Well it honestly depends on what type of demons you're talking about..."

From Rem's point of view Chris could be seen pondering abut he question when in reality he honestly didn't care on what trauma he was going through or if she had an inferiority complex, sure if he was the same person he was years ago he would have wanted to be close with her and win her over. But life wasn't like that no matter hwow cute and kind the girl was you couldn't just love them immediately as that wasn't love that was just someone being horny.

"Well if the Oni hasn't done anything harmful towards me or anyone I would probably befriend them if their personality isn't trash!"

With his declaration Chris smiled towards Rem causing the girl to look at him for a brief moment before smiling back.

"You're a good person aren't you?"

"Well... I try to be."

With that the two of them made their way back to the Mansion in pure silence as they had nothing else to talk about, Chris on the other hand began thinking about himself and he came to one conclusion.

'I'm a selfish psycho.'

But despite this he was still determined to keep moving forward as crying and complaining about life and how this world was so cruel wouldn't help him, his own DETERMINATION was the only thing keeping him sane.

After a few minutes of walking they had arrived back at the manor as the sun started to set, Chris had given the bags of salt and barrel to Rem whow as able to carry it all by herself as she was far from being weak. He then made his way towards the gate of the Mansion and did what he was expected to do, which was to patrol around the Mansion from Knight till day but as the sun began setting Chris saw multiple Red eyes from the forest looking at him.

He closed his eyes for a brief moment and instantly the Mabeast charged at him but as they were about to get close he opened his eyes and this time they were glowing bright red with DETERMINATION.

"Better get to work."

And with that he began his first duty as a knight, to protect the Mansion from the Mabeast.
