“I won’t hurt you, Stella,” he promised in a low voice. “Ever.”
“Jane might order you to shoot me.”
“I’d nevershoot you,” Libs hissed, clenching his hands. “Nothing that Jane could do to me would evermake me do anything to you.”
“What about Rory?”
Liberty froze, hiding his flinch as best he could.
“She’s already ordered you to hurt him, I can tell. It’s the sort of thing she would do. No doubt you’re the only one who canhurt him.”
They stared at one another, and Stella’s chest heaved. He wanted to be angry at her, but this bizarre situation wasn’t her fault. She was just as much a victim as he was. Neither of them was to blame for the fact that Jane and Rory were facing off. He couldn’t even blame Stella for being able to switch sides when he couldn’t.
