“All of them are what is known as heirloom varieties,” Eric said, “and we haven’t even begun to identify them as yet. I’m hoping that a couple of varieties in the garden might turn out to be ones that were thought to have been lost over the years, but the verdict’s still out on that. We’ve had a decent amount of bloom this year, but they haven’t bounced back like I’d hoped they would. Next year will certainly be better; but right now, the roses remain a mystery to be solved.”

Mrs. Perry looked around the grounds, and said, “I’m surprised that you don’t have a maze over there to one side of the rose garden.”

“The original design lacked a maze,” Carlton said, “but it certainly sounds like a great idea. Eric, why don’t you and Rusty give me a sketch, and we’ll go from there?”

Carlton pointed the golf cart toward the south side of the house and drove it up in front of the little folly.

“And here we have one of the more interesting features of the house,” he said.
