I became incorporeal. Not a body, just a mass of senses, looking out across a bridge of presence, which came across as many twining, titillating strands of light. None of Gus's magic reached out to pull me in. It only laid down to show the way.
I followed along it, feeling each tendril prick in awareness of my presence. And then I could feel him, all around me, as something mixed between a smell, a sound, and a feel.
"Well?" I asked.
"I'm not taking you anywhere," came his thoughts to me. "You go where you want, just like you said."
And so I did. I stepped down in a hazy place, prickling with fatigue, where his thoughts flowed around me like water. I could sense his feelings like a taste, his painfully sweet hope, his sour fear, and his bitter regret.
