There was a way to find out which location the gate to another world took you to. Some people knew it, and some people could manipulate it, and people in high positions like the Oxwade council knew it.
Rick Kranefus, though not a council member, held a distinct position directly under their authority, affording him the means to navigate the gate towards a specific location.
Inside the gate was a fake dungeon. Stepping through it, Rick found himself in a lush forest. His countenance betrayed a familiarity with the surroundings, indicating that he is accustomed to such scenes. Outside Rick Kranefus looked like an old man who had difficulty moving because all he needed to do was bend over. However, once he had entered the dungeon, he stood straight, like an old man who still had his teenage energy.
