Chapter 31: Playtime

He knew Ara was here somewhere. He could smell her, even with perhaps a hundred people crowding the ballroom.

After the announcement was made, Sir Andalos gave a short speech about family and what a blessing it was to be sending off his daughter to such an honorable man, and it took all Acheron’s self-control not to snort at his words.

He hadn’t even discussed the engagement with Seraphina. It was all a political transaction, and he and his fiance were the pawns. The girl had no say in it. He did, but all of this was a mere diversion from his true purpose, and he’d treat it as such. If it made his father and his advisors stay away from him, then he’d be the pawn if he had to.

This had all been a lot simpler before he met Ara, though.
