Chapter One

Blueth Mendoza's POV

I made my way to the address which was written on the calling card I saw. It's still a mystery why it flew by the time I was there, was it a coincidence? Or was it on purpose? I can't stop thinking that I was the chosen one or something, it fills me with excitement.

I reached the address which was written on the calling card. And to be honest? It wasn't what I thought it would be. I thought that the place would be a magical book store or something, but this place, this place looks like an abandoned store. Everything is all dirty and dark. Well, this place is at the very end of a dark valley, so I don't know what I expected.

The excitement which I felt earlier slowly started leaving my body. As I looked at the place from the outside.

"Well, I guess they closed down ages ago? And that this calling card is something which has been getting dragged around by the wind?"

Normally, I would just leave and look for other bookstores that would accept me as their proofreader. But I caught myself staring at the broken-down door of the bookstore I am standing in front of.

"I wonder what happened here?" I said as I started walking towards the door of the bookstore. As I reached towards the door of the bookstore, it opened before I can even touch it. The door made this creaking and squeaky sound as it kept opening.

"Hello? Is anyone there?" I asked as I started walking inside the building. Someone has to be in here, I mean who could've opened the door, right? It couldn't be the wind. The wind I felt can't be strong enough to open a door that's been closed for years, at least, I think that the door hasn't been opened for years.

I walked inside the building as I pushed away the cobwebs which were blocking my path. As I was looking around, I heard something being knocked over in the back room of the building. I jumped and I accidentally knocked over chairs that were stacked together and they fell on top of me.

"Ah!!!" I yelled out as my legs got stuck on the little gaps the chairs made as they fell. I tried getting unstuck but I couldn't free my legs from the gaps. "Help! Someone? Anyone!? Help me!!!" I yelled as I kept trying to get myself unstuck, but the chairs didn't budge.

I kept trying to get one of the chairs to loosen because as they say in physics if one thing is loose, everything else will come crashing down. I don't know if I'm right but it was something like that, call it a domino effect if you like.

"Meow."

"Huh?"

As I was trying to get myself free from the mountain of chairs on me. I heard a cat's meow. I looked around and I saw this white cat come out of the door leading to the backroom. It gave a stretch and it sat on the ground, looking at me. I won't lie, it was the cutest cat I have ever seen. Well, to be fair, in my point of view, all cats are cute. And I would go nuts if ever I see one! And in this case, I see one and I am going nuts!

"Awe, what a cute little kitty! Let me hug you!" I said as I tried my best to reach for the cat. I didn't even bother thinking about the situation I am in. Sure, I am trapped with these heavy chairs which may collapse and cave in on me, crushing my small bones and killing me, but there's a cat in front of me! And it is too cute not to give a hug and love!

"Were you the one who made the noise from earlier?" I said as I kept reaching for the cat. It just stared at me as it wiggled its short tail. That's it! When I get unstuck in this mountain of chairs, I will run home with the cat!

"Wait right there, kitty! I'm just going to free myself from this mountain of chairs, and I! Blueth Mendoza! Will give you all of my love! I just need to unstuck my leg from this here trap!"

As I tried to reach for the chair which caught my legs to free it, I heard footsteps coming from the backroom. Scavengers!? Are they the people who look for old abandoned places and loot whatever it is they find?

Okay, pause, before I go too deep, let's talk about who and what scavengers are. Recently, there has been local news flying around the city that there have been sightings of people in robbers' outfits breaking into abandoned places and looting the places. They take anything which catches their eye or anything which seems to hold a high price in the market. We would call them robbers, but that would mean that they also rob houses which are not abandoned, which they don't do. They're like the cleanup crew of abandoned places. Normally, people would report this kind of thing, but since they are not hurting anyone and robbing homes with people, they are free to scavenge all they want.

Okay, now that that's been settled, let's get back to the part where I am about to get in trouble with the scavengers.

"Oh no, oh no, this is bad, this is very bad! Kitty! Quick! Hide!" I whispered to the kitty with a slight yell as I tried my best in getting myself unstuck from the chairs.

I kept kicking and pushing and shaking my legs, and I can feel I'm starting to get bruised and starting to get a bit of skin peeled off of my legs in doing so. But it was worth it. I managed to make one of the chairs to loosen. Domino effect, make your move!

I managed to knock away one chair and the chairs all came crashing down, luckily, I did not get crushed by them. I just got my legs bruised and skin peeled off, but I'm alive, and that's what it all matters. The cute little kitty ran away because of the noise I caused.

"Ha! Yes! Success!" I screamed as I did a little victory dance. Wait, I think I'm forgetting something. And should I scream this loudly? Was I forgetting something?

"What do we have here?" I heard a voice say behind me.

Oh right, scavengers.
