Chapter 33

It was late afternoon when he sat in Edward Farrah’s study dressed in his best, waiting for him to arrive. When the door opened, and he walked in, Charles stood and greeted his old friend warmly, but couldn’t stop wondering if Sebastian was in the house somewhere.

“Good to see you.” Edward shook his hand and gestured for him to sit.

“And you. I take it your brother has returned to you?”

Edward nodded, and Charles stomach knotted. “I’m sorry I was unable to dissuade him from his course.”

“Thank you for putting up with him. It can’t have been easy.”

And there it was. Edward genuinely thought that he had simply ‘put up with him’ as though he were a child. A nuisance. “It was a pleasure to have his company. He is a fine young man.”

Edward made a snorting sound. “He would be if he could ever take anything seriously.”

“And you don’t think joining the army to fight against the French is taking life seriously?”
