Project Monster

For most people when they’re little, they are always so afraid of a monster hiding underneath their bed or lurking inside their closet. But that’s just because of naivety. Since why would a monster even need to hide from its prey? Daily life in the country of Fokus is odd for an average citizen like Razor Smirnov. He struggles to find a job, tries to make it through life in the city, and has to worry about when the next monster will randomly appear and cause havoc in the city. Inbetweener 3-A: A Dull Checkup

"Temperature: 98.5 degrees."

A note is written down on a clipboard.

"Heart Rate: 63 Beats Per Minute."

Another note is added.

"Keep your right eye open but close your left."

The person being examined, Razor Smirnov, does as he's told as a light shines into his eye.

"Now the other side."

Razor closes his right eye and opens his left, the doctor shines the light into the now open eye.

"No dilation."

A final note is added before the Doctor, Sebastian Turner, sets the clipboard down as he sits down at a nearby chair.

This is just a part of Razor's weekly routine. Ever since his blast accidentally awakened, once a week he's been required to go under a medical checkup by the same doctor. Although this is only his second proper appointment, each time it feels so… lifeless.

Maybe it's the fluorescent lights accentuating the dullness of the hospital room, maybe it's the look of apathy coming from the old Doctor's eyes, or maybe it's because Razor had to return to the hospital right after he got released from it due to the fight against the 50% monster. Whatever the case may be, one thing was for certain. Both men in the room would rather be anywhere else.

"Have you experienced any changes in appetite, sleep patterns, or anything of the such since you last showed up?" Doctor Sebastian Turner asks the young adult.

"Oh no, besides getting woken up sometimes for my job, not much has changed," Razor remarks.

"I see," Sebastian Turner remarks, "Have you used any drugs, tobacco, or alcohol recently?"

"Last time I drank was before all of," Razor tries to find the words to say but decides to just motion to himself as he finishes, "this."

"And your sex life?"

"Wh-why do you need to know that?"

"I'm a doctor, it's my job," Doctor Sebastian coldly affirms.

Razor is a bit hesitant before answering his question with a shy, "Inactive."

"Thank you, Mister Smirnov," Doctor Sebastian Turner states as he picks up his clipboard once more, "Now I'd like to shift focus to the other topic on hand."

Razor is a bit curious but decides to keep silent so the Doctor can explain.

"From what I've heard you have been on a few assignments with the rest of the monster killers in this city that are associated with the northern division," Sebastian remarks, "Because of that Nikita told me it would be best to get your blast on record."

"On record?" Razor questions.

"Government keeps track of all blasts, for safety reasons," Sebastian Turner explains, "Now I'm going to list off the six categories a blast can fall under, feel free to tell me if any of these fit with what your blast is."

Razor nods.

"Category 01: Creators. Your blast allows you to create or spawn objects into reality," Turner lists off.

"No," Razor states as he thinks of Abdulov's fireworks.

Turner crosses it off his clipboard before listing off, "Category 02: Alteraters. Your blast allows you to alter already existing objects."

"No," Razor states as he thinks of Anastasia's bag of sand.

Turner crosses it off his clipboard before listing off, "Category 03: Birthers. Your blast allows you to create a specific creature with their own consciousness."

"Yeah no," Razor sighs as he thinks about Destiny and her talking sword.

Turner crosses it off his clipboard before listing off, "Category 04: Mutants. Your blast has permanently altered your genetic makeup at all times."

"I mean besides those side effects from the chip malfunctioning not really," Razor utters while thinking about Tire's stitched body.

Turner crosses it off his clipboard before listing off, "Category 05: Shifters. When you activate your blast your body transforms into another state different from your normal one."

"Yes, that's it," Razor remarks, recalling the conversation he had with Katina.

"I see," Turner states as he jots down a note.

However despite the category being decided upon, Turner adds, "And just to make clear you aren't the sixth and final category?"

"Which one is that?" Razor questions, unaware of anybody with that type of power.

"Law-Makers," Sebastian starts to describe, "the user of the blast can create a particular 'law' of reality that the surrounding area has to follow."

"That's definitely not it," Razor jokes.

"I see, and from what you mentioned in our last meeting; your blast makes you much more durable and the ruby that appears on your chest can fire a laser?" Turner inquires.

"Yes but it takes a while for that to happen," Razor explains.

"I see, thanks for stopping by, you can head out now," Turner remarks before adding, "And remember since we still don't know all of your body's changes, the only doctor you're supposed to be seeing is me."

"Yeah I know," Razor sighs as he puts on his jacket, "Take care Doc."

Sebastian Turner doesn't reciprocate the farewell. As Razor begins to walk down the hallway of the hospital he begins to think about two things.

The first thing he wonders about is all the other blasts he's seen his colleagues have. He's already guessed at a few of them, but there are still some people he's met that he hasn't got a clue on like Frank Walker, Violet & Red Tucker, Bastard, and Dmitri.

The second thing he thinks about as he exits the hospital is…

If he has to go do one of these checkups every single week, he's going to die of boredom.
