PROJECT: Lullaby

Okay, is this thing on? No? I’m moving the camera… It’s not working? What do you mean it’s not working, do you know how hard it is for me to get this? What, you said that the audio just works fine but the camera isn’t? Fine… but do you think I should start with… “Yo, this is Death and welcome to my vlog?” The hell do you mean that it’s not a vlog? Fine… fine, I’ll just do it normally. … Hello, this is Death… Yes, that Death but not the one that goes for dogs or visits old ladies or men in their rooms to take them out, which I have to say that I’m not… I don’t do that anymore. But, moving on… since we, as part of the enterprise that screens the dead and basically one of the few core institutions that manage the underworld itself, are alarmed at this current number of deaths we’re having right now, with the virus and all. Thus, as part of the company’s policy, we are here right now to deliver this public service announcement. Like the other institutions that you, humans, have, we strongly advise that you should keep yourself indoors and of course, keep yourselves healthy and wash your hands. In accordance with that, we have assigned a group of talented people to document, compile and rewrite their fellow reaper’s reports for your viewing pleasure. Thus, we would very much proud to show you this collective story, that was rewritten to follow a coherent narrative about our own Reapers, born of you, humans as well, who chose to end their own lives, doing their jobs to help the souls of other people still bound to the earth. This is the Project Lullaby and we sincerely hope that you would enjoy our story and keep yourself at home where you’re safe from the virus, please… like seriously. That is all, thank you.

Day 4: 04:43PM

"So…" MC broke the silence with both of them still staring into the screen. "Is… this is it?"

"What do you mean? This is it, you should be a bit happier, you now?" Jeremy replied as he scratched his forehead. "I mean, I can only imagine the number of nags, reports, and paperwork you have to do once this is over."

"Sure, thanks for reminding me but I mean, I have to admit… this is quite fun… I'm just surprised that this is the first time…" MC stopped herself and as though still hesitating, she smiled and added, "This is the first time that Dolphin's enemy managed to be alive this long. Do you have any plans after this?"

"Oh wow," Jeremy jerked back and smiled. "Asking me out already?" He chuckled and with a serious gaze along with a playful tone, he continued, "Let us be professionals here, Miss MC. Though I am not saying no, I'm saying that let's just talk about that later, please."

"I'm asking if you're just gonna let this pass. I mean, let them fight till their hearts' content until the Reds come along, you idiot."

Jeremy looked at the screen with a dark smile and after letting out a long breath through his nose, he replied, "Well… I do have more plans and if you're asking me if I'm going to let them beat each other to death…"

They watched the two beasts beneath the moonlight having a go at each other in the middle of the intersection, looking like a stage, especially with all that rubble around them along with the other tall buildings in the distance acting as its fence. Both monsters had an exchange of heavy blows that felt like it could level a building, breaking the earth beneath them as if it was giving its way to let them have their battle of legends. Soon enough, they saw the Muse kicking the ground, using it to propel itself forward and whip its long arm towards Dolphin who raised his forearms to defend. To its surprise, the Muse's attack ripped through the Dolphin's left arm and through its torso once again but instead of falling down, with the demon losing its momentum, the Dolphin stepped back and smashed its fist into the Muse's head even before a second could pass. It rolled to the ground once again, wondering what just happened and when it was almost about to get into its knees, its head was blown off in silence. It fell down as though it lost control of its body and there came four spears that made it face the floor.

"...of course not," Jeremy continued before breaking into a laugh. "I mean, I went this far to see if it could read minds because it would be a real bitch if it could. It breaking into a run surprised me but really, it would be a shame… it would be a shame if I don't get my fair share of fun too because, after all, beating the shit out of something is a thing that I enjoy."

The Muse's neck began to bubble. It grew out a tumor that soon looked as if it was taking the shape of its head but then again, it was blown off once more. Not a second passed before a few bullets bolted in and bore a hole through its body. With this, the Dolphin, who appeared to be unharmed but bathing with the demon's blood and its own, stepped forward and planted its feet onto the monster's face, crushing it right before it was about to fully regenerate. Without another word and appearing as though it was smiling, the Dolphin placed its foot on its back next and made it scream as it pulled the spears stuck on its flesh one by one. The Muse was left shrieking like a pig getting butchered and bleeding like a fountain, left with no real way of protecting itself as its joints, head and a part of its back would be blown off even before it could regain its former strength.

"Oh you monster," MC replied with a playful tone before a dark smile crept up her face.

Jeremy gave her a laugh before he leaned forward to unmute their microphone. "Status report, anyone?"

"This is the Towers, our group has seven shots left, we're waiting on your command, sir…"

"This is the shield heroes, Mary's awake and smiling but none of us could talk to her, she's staring at Dolphin though."

"Fuuuuuuuckk yeaaaahh!!" One shouted before it was drowned by the sounds of gunshots.

"Looks like the Snipers are having fun but—"

They were then interrupted when they saw the Dolphin, right after pulling the fourth and final spear out of its body, flying towards the building in the distance. The Muse, who appeared to be the one that caused it to fly, standing up with its back hunched and now with all of its limbs blowing up like a balloon, creating lumps of saggy flesh beneath its red and charred skin. Keeping its eyes on the cloud of smoke from where the Dolphin was, it then took a step forward and raised its chest into the air. The blackened meat that covered its sticking ribs bubbled and soon, the tumor that it grew slowly took form and turned into nine spikes that had the end of it sticking even from its back. Without another word, the spikes were shot out and flew towards the location of Jeremy's five snipers and four of his men who manned the ballista.

"It evolved," MC whispered with this sense of fear creeping back into her heart.

"Of course it would… and that's game," Jeremy replied as he kept his eyes on the screen. He cupped his chin once more and after a long breath, he pressed a button and said, "Status report."

"Snipers… three of us didn't make it sir, and our cover has been blown," one replied almost immediately before letting out a chuckle.

"We lost four of us, sir, the ones who fired got taken down… their lines went silent as well…" One added.

"I see, thanks… wait for my command and for the others, stand back…" Jeremy sighed and looked at MC with a smile. "You were saying?"

"I mean… it seems that you still have a plan in mind if you're acting like this," MC replied. "Is this a part of your plan too?"

"No, not by a longshot, of course, I did consider this though. I don't set someone up to die so I'm really happy that Mary survived. She did fail but oh man, the only reason why I got to this point was because she altered that demon's weight. That was ballsy of her, of course, I never trusted her at one bit so her only instruction was to throw that flashbang," Jeremy continued along with a chuckle. "So now, after being forced to carry the weight that it should not be able to carry, it had no choice but to evolve its strength… The Muse shooting me from afar proves that point. It gave up its mobility and it intends to kill our Dolphin first..."

Both of them looked into the screen where they soon saw the Muse running towards the Dolphin in the distance. It arched its body backward with its right arm slowly gaining mass and after a second, it kicked the floor and jumped towards it. It sent out its huge fist that was as big as its body towards its enemy in an attempt to hammer it but to its surprise, the Dolphin planted its feet and threw a punch of its own with its left arm. The collision brought about a gust of wind that was strong enough to brush away all the rubble beneath them and what came next was the sound of the Muse's arm breaking.

"...which is something that we want," Jeremy continued with his lips contorting into a dark and playful smile. "Man, I would love to know if that creature feels fear… but I'm quite satisfied to know that it's confused, especially when I know why."

The Dolphin jumped towards it even before it could recover and smashed its face into the ground. Then, with a single breath, it planted its feet into the Muse's head once more and pulled its gigantic left arm away from its body before throwing it away. It was then left to scream like a pig once more as the Dolphin moved onto the next as though it was laughing.

"I'm afraid I don't know what you meant…"

"Well… it's a no brainer for someone like me, really. This thing is quite formidable you see, and it adapts to quite quickly, so all I had to do was to treat it like a frog in a pot of water over a stove. I started with nothing, then with the weakest of bullets and spears to show that there's a threat afar… I did pursue taking those veils off as one of my fail-safe plans to bomb it to kingdom come if everything fails. Nevertheless, I just fed it some useless information and forced it to evolve over and over again, though, too bad it managed to break the pot quicker than I had expected and escape."

"Your point being?" MC followed as she furrowed her brows.

"My point is, we would be fucked if it chose to prioritize mobility over strength so I forced it to evolve in a certain way that I want and make it hit a wall…" Jeremy looked at the screen with a smile, watching the Dolphin rip the Muse's limbs from its body one by one as the monster wriggled as though it was screaming. "...a formidable wall in the form of a Dolphin that could never be killed as long as it remains free and gets all the strength it needs to break out if it ever was caught and caged. And with that, I believe that that's time."

Just at that moment, Mary's phone rang and when she answered it, it said, "This is Jonathan from the Reds and thank you very much for your work, I'm here to take over… err…" The voice paused as though it hesitated and after a nervous chuckle, it asked, "Did you even need my help?"
