Character Creation [Part 6]

'Even in death, I can't get a break. Fuck you…uhh-' He paused, scratched his head, not knowing who to blame his terrible luck on, 'Fuck you, God of Luck!'

He threw out a random title. Austin wasn't sure if the God of Luck existed, but it wouldn't hurt to blame him.

…That wasn't a red flag, was it?

Anyway, Austin knew he was done for, even if the wheel was filled with one quintillion Progenitor Races and only one weak Bloodline. He would one-hundred percent land on the weakest Bloodline forever reduced to not even a third-rate thug, but an even worse fifth-rate thug.

"Not entirely, just being a Progenitor does not mean you are invincible." Ulric answered while stroking his beard.

Austin frowned angrily.

"Oi, then why did you nod your head!?"

With a teasing smirk, Ulric answered, "Hahaha, didn't I tell you not to sweat the small stuff?"

Austin was speechless, he really wanted to move on… to his next life.

"Anyway, just being a Progenitor doesn't make you all-powerful, you still have to train, get stronger, and a bunch of other things."

"What does…'bunch of other things' mean?" Austin inquired tiredly. Why couldn't he just explain thoroughly? What was the purpose of cryptically speaking?

Was that his fetish?

"Why ruin the fun? You will know in due time. The journey is what matters, not the end."

"..." What the hell did that even mean?

Ulric fell silent.

Noticing the silence… almost if not for the constant popcorn chewing behind him… Austin understood the old man wouldn't answer his questions.

He sighed, during the entire time they were speaking his eyes had never left the monitor, more precisely speaking, the flashing, colorful spin wheel.

His eyebrows furrowed in frustration and a hint of sadness.

'Haah.. Wheel of Fate… why does Fate get to dictate my actions? Why am I not in control of my fate?' Austin asked himself. Fate seemed to have it out for him. His life had always been terrible and it seemed it would continue being that way.

He continued to stare at the spin wheel, wanting to gleam a bit of understanding as to how it functioned in hopes that he could find a loophole.

Even the tiniest increase in his luck would be a cause for celebration.

However, after a full minute, he realized it was a useless endeavor, the wheel had no loopholes and even if it did, he didn't even know how to begin to find them.

*Sigh*

He exhaled a breath in frustration.

"Whatever, let's just get this over with." Using the mouse, he moved the cursor underneath the wheel where a big red rectangular "spin me" button was.

He closed his eyes and in an apathetic tone of voice said, 'Gods for once, don't screw with me. Allow me to finally live a life that I can be proud of. A life that I can be happy living. A life free from suffering.'

He knew praying was useless, the Gods had never granted his wish.

That was why his voice was indifferent.

So then why did he pray?

Even he did not know or maybe because he held onto a small bit of…hope, that one of the Gods would grant him a bit of luck, allowing him to at least obtain a decent Race for his next life.

Mediocrity was better than inferiority.

Without opening his eyes, he took one final deep breath, lifted his index finger, and pressed down on the left-click button.

Immediately, he heard the previously stationary wheel begin to spin.

*Click, Click, Click*

As the wheel spun, his ears twitched with each rotation, he felt nauseous, sweat began to pour from his forehead down his face, his heart beat wildly like never before, and his entire body felt the urge to keel over and throw up.

'Fuck you Fate!'

His next life depended on the two-dimensional inanimate object.

What Austin did not know was that as soon as he closed his eyes, the kind smile that perpetually remained on Ulric's face disappeared. His face was unnaturally serious, his eyes narrowed as he gazed at the wheel that would decide the Fate of not only Austin, but his, and his family.

'Please give the young man a Progenitor Title.'

'Who knows how long it will be until another Being is chosen by Qliphoth.'

*Click, Click, Click*

In the room, only the clicking sound from the wheel could be heard.

Austin was so nervous and afraid that he stopped breathing.

Unlike Austin who was a Mortal, Ulric was a God and his body worked completely differently. For him, breathing might as well be a foreign concept.

Ulric's brows furrowed as worry seized him.

'I'm not sure if I can wait for another person to be chosen by Qliphoth.' He continued to speak to himself, yet he knew that was not the case.

'Unless you want oceans of blood to spill through the infinite universe, then give Austin a Progenitor Title.'

Thirty seconds later, Austin heard the clicking sound from the wheel getting slower before coming to a stop.

"Hohoho, it seems Lady Luck favored you this time!" Ulric was surprised by the Race the wheel landed on. He knew of the boy's terrible Luck, yet it seemed Luck was on his side this time around.

'Did IT listen to me?' He wondered, unsure. He knew that Being was another anomaly just like Qliphoth.

Austin's body shook in excitement at Ulric's words, and just as he was about to open his eyes, he hesitated.

*Cough*

"..." Ulric was speechless by Austin's refusal to open his eyes.

"...haah, young Austin, do you not want to see what Race the wheel landed on?"

"No!" Austin adamantly shook his head.

Austin refused to open his eyes. He was too nervous...too afraid to open his eyes and see the failure that he would be once again.
