“It was…was the only thing I could think of,” Daniel replied shakily. “My aim sucked, but—”

“It did the job,” Griffin assured him. “Now we’d better call the police to pick up this piece of scum. Of course he’ll just deny he was up here to kill us, or say we’re trying to frame him, but we’ll deal with that later.”

“Kind of hard to do when I recorded it.” Daniel took a digital voice recorder from his pocket, explaining that he used to keep track of ideas for paintings, when he saw something that inspired him but didn’t have a sketchpad with him. “I pushed the record button when we sat down, and prayed.” He turned it on, sighing with relief when they heard everything Ray had said. “Not terribly clear, but enough to do the job.”

After that, Griffin called the police to tell them what had happened. He was shaking his head when he hung up. “They are not happy about not being able to drive right up to the front door, but they’ll survive. We can deal with the fish while we wait.”
