5 Chapter 5: Who's That Pokemon!

Aeron and Misty walked toward the Pewter City Academy. It was time for the academy to end today, and the buses would take the non-Pewter City residents back to their homes.

"Do you use Pokegram?"

"Yes, but it is limited to a few people." Misty took out her smartphone, pulled up her social media ID, and showed it to him. "Send a request, and I will follow you back."

Aeron opened his own Pokegram account and sent a friend request to Misty. Once they added each other as friends, they exchanged contact numbers before parting ways.

"Let's stay in contact." Aeron waved his hand as he walked toward the bus that he had come in.

"Do let me know what Pokémon it is, or I will come to find you myself."

"Sure. Catch you later." Aeron smiled and said one last goodbye before walking onto the bus and taking his seat while placing the egg on a seat beside him.

The students walked onto the bus and were surprised to see Aeron with an egg beside him. Knowing he liked to stay alone, none disturbed their senior, but they could take their eyes away from the Pokémon egg beside him.

Misty walked away, making her way toward the Viridian Forest. She felt a chill run down her spine when she remembered all the Bug-type Pokémon she would have to pass through to reach the Viridian City.

"Maybe I should wait till tomorrow morning."

'Indigo League.'

When Aeron was shopping with Misty, he saw a poster announcing the start of the world-famous Indigo League, where trainers from around the world would come to participate. It was the beginning of June, and Indigo League was scheduled for August next year.

'I have 14 months to prepare.'

It was a lot of time, yet it was too little. Those who participated in the League would not be rookies but trainers with years of experience. Indigo League was where the trainers were tested along with their Pokémon.

'Even the top hundred would be hard...' thought Aeron. 'Should I wait...no.' He immediately shook his head. 'It is not important what results I get but whether I can learn from such a great stage for Pokémon Trainers. And when have I ever feared a challenge?'

While busy in his thoughts, Aeron did not realize when the bus had reached Florian City.

"We are here."

Aeron snapped out of his thoughts and got up before leaving the bus. "Thank you so much."

He jumped down from the bus and saw his mother waiting for him. With a smile, he walked toward her while showing off the egg in his hand. "Look what I got."

A soft smile appeared on Sophia's face when she saw the happiness on Aeron's face. The duo entered the house, and Ethan was already waiting for him.

"Did you not go to work today?"

"I was planning to take a half-day, but when officer Jenny heard you will get your Pokémon egg today, she allowed me to take a day off and help you out if need be." Ethan walked toward Aeron, but his eyes were on the egg in the incubator.

"What Pokémon egg is this?"

Aeron shrugged. "I don't know."

"Oh, okay." Ethan nodded, but then his eyes widened in disbelief. "You don't know?"

Aeron rubbed the back of his head. He then explained everything to his parents.

How Lia told him about the talent of this Pokémon and everything that happened during the day. He did not forget to show off his new space bag the academy rewarded him with.

*Sigh*

Both Ethan and Sophia sighed. They looked at each other and gave a wry smile before turning toward Aeron.

"Do you know how foolish it is to choose an unknown egg as your started?"

"Yes."

"And you still chose it?"

They were not angry at his decision but wanted to know what led him to take it. They knew their son better than anyone else. He could have been more smart with his studies, but he was cleverer than those his age regarding other things.

"It is difficult to explain this with just words, but when I approached the egg, I felt it was meant for me. It was there just for me, calling me to take it home. It had an aura that made me feel at home."

Ethan and Sophia frowned at those words. They had once been trainers, and though they decided to retire earlier than other trainers, they still had their share of different experiences.

"We believe you." Sophia caressed Aeron's face while looking at the egg in his hands. "If what you said is the truth, you made the right choice."

"Huh?"

Ethan looked at his son's expression and gave a small laugh. "You thought we would scold you?" He shook his head. "The only reason we asked about your choice was to know if you thought about it or just went in head-first. In this world filled with mysteries and Pokémon, it is not weird for an egg to call for you and make you feel like you did."

Ethan pointed at the egg. "Moreover, the Breeding Centre would not lie to you about the egg's talent. If what they said turns out to be false, they would be in deep trouble, and the family controlling the Breeding Centre would never want to create trouble with the League."

"How long till it hatches?" Sophia asked.

"Lia said it would take eight hours." Aeron looked at the time. He was in the breeding centre at 10:30 am, and it was 5:00 pm. "About an hour and a half before it hatches."

"Did you buy milk and other necessary things?" Ethan said as he walked upstairs toward Aeron's room.

"Yes."

"Then all that is left to do is wait."

-o-

Aeron walked back and forth in his room as he looked at the time and the egg placed at the centre of his bed. Eight hours were up, but he still could not feel any movements from the egg. His parents stood outside the room, not wanting to be the first human the hatched Pokémon would see. The Pokémon would consider the first person it saw as its family.

As the said eight hours passed, Aeron's anxiousness grew by leaps and bounds.

"I hope there are no problems..." It was then that he felt the egg move. His steps paused, and his eyes were focused on the black egg with red patterns over its body.

*Crack*

He looked at the small cracks forming on the egg's surface. The number of cracks increased with each passing second, and he heard something punch the eggshell from inside.

The Pokémon inside was trying its best to come out, and after two more hits, an arm was extended out from the egg. It was brownish and had a unique lustre to it. Very soon, another arm emerged outside, followed by legs and then the Pokémon tore apart the eggshell.

Aeron looked at the Pokémon that appeared before him. It had tusks growing out of its mouth, with which it broke its eggshell, eating all of it before turning toward Aeron. It looked at the human before him and walked over to his side. As if it was not used to walking or was not strong enough to walk, the Pokémon stumbled toward him.

Aeron walked toward it as well. Apparent disbelief, joy and excitement were written all over his face.

The human and Pokémon had a staring competition before the little Pokémon nudged its head into Aeron's chest.

It was difficult to tell what Pokémon would hatch from an egg since its colour could be misleading. There were times when a red-coloured egg hatched into a Water-type Pokémon than a Fire-type.

Aeron knew this fact but still guessed that the Pokémon he would get would be water or flying. But he could have never imagined the one hatched from the egg, even in his wildest dreams. He looked at the Pokémon before him, and his eyes were filled with surprise and happiness.

How could they not be? What was before his eyes were nothing short of a miracle.

It had brownish skin with a dark greenhorn on its head. Right under its face was a purplish scarf wrapping around its neck. But what made it stand out was the two tusks growing out of its mouth.

Aeron knew what Pokémon it was. But even he, a Pokémon fanatic, knew very little about this species since they were very rare. He could already imagine the monster it would become once it had fully grown and evolved.

"Axew."

The Pokémon's voice brought Aeron back from his train of thoughts. Aeron gave a soft smile and raised his hands to pick up the newborn Axew, but soon, a frown appeared on his face.

"Heavy."

"You might as well be one of the heaviest newborn Pokémon in the world." Aeron chuckled at his own words. A newly born Axew could easily reach a weight of 10 kg or more. "But don't expect me to lift when you grow a little."

Aeron looked at Axew, who was nuzzling its head into his chest. 'Who would believe Axew line can be cute?'

He took out the Miltank milk he had bought and started feeding his starter. As strong as Axew's line was, they were heavy eaters, something one would expect from Dragon-type Pokémon. Just the newly born Axew drank three bottles of milk before it gave a cute burp and went back to sleep.

Aeron took out a Pokeball and placed it on Axew's head. "Should I catch it now?" But he shook his head. 'Not like this.'

Axew was a Dragon-type Pokémon, and these types were known for egos as large as a mountain. If he could win it over and then catch it, this Dragon would follow Aeron even to the depths of hell.

"Mom and Dad should be waiting." He smiled and stood up before walking towards the door. Ethan and Sophia had been waiting outside for him all this time. As soon as Aeron opened the door, the duo turned towards him, and their eyes landed on the newly born Dragon in his arms.

"This is?" Sophia asked as she came closer to look at the Pokémon in Aeron's arms. She could not believe her eyes when she looked at the small Dragon Pokémon sleeping in her son's arms.

He raised the Pokémon in his hand, and looks of disbelief appeared on his parent's faces. Aeron chuckled at their response, as he was already expecting such a reaction. He was not as calm as he seemed to be on the outside. Who would be? No one. Every Pokémon trainer dreamed of catching a Dragon-type Pokémon, but only a few were worthy and lucky enough for it.

Yet, his starter was a Dragon-type—a force to be reckoned with.

"H-How?" Sophia was the first to speak, but Aeron just shrugged his shoulders. Ethan, too, was equally surprised. But more than that, the duo was happy knowing their son had gotten a strong partner to travel with.

"You got yourself a very reliable Pokémon as a partner. I can only imagine how strong it would grow if you train it properly, which I know you will." Ethan walked forward and looked at the little monster sleeping in his son's arms. "But…you will have to be careful. It is not easy to train a Dragon-type Pokémon. Not only are they hard to handle due to their arrogance and pride, but their abnormally slow evolution rate makes them one of the worst Pokémon as a starter."

Aeron nodded his head in understanding. As strong as Haxorus was, it also had undeniable flaws. The evolution requirements for any Dragon-type Pokémon were very harsh. And that was just the tip of the iceberg when dealing with a Dragon-type Pokémon, especially Axew and its evolutions.

Aeron gave a wry smile as all of his excitement evaporated into the air.
