Chapter 3: The Mysterious Egg

Pewter City was famous for its Rock-type gym. It was also one of the weakest gyms within the Kanto Region and was visited by every rookie trainer as soon as they got their Pokémon. But this was where some people had a big misconception. Even though the gym was weak, it did not mean the gym leader was weak.

All gyms had a standard according to which they had to use specific levels of Pokémon whenever they were challenged. The Pewter City's Gym leader was tasked with testing the new trainers who had just begun their journey and used weaker Pokémon for battle during gym matches.

Since the gym was famous for using Rock-type Pokémon, one could easily see several trainers carrying Water-type Pokémon—at least those who were here to challenge the gym leader Flint.

Within the streets of Pewter City, Aeron ran as fast as he could while making his way toward the Breeding Centre.

[Take a left turn in 10 meters]

A mechanical voice rang from the holographic map displayed before his eyes. It was the latest feature among the new gen Pokédex released.

When he left the Academy, he ran straight to a Pokémon centre and registered himself.

Pokedex was a device that was used to identify different Pokémon. It also served as one's ID and many other cool features. They came in different shapes and sizes. The one Aeron obtained was in the form of a smartphone, and it contained the latest holographic update.

Aeron took a left turn, as indicated by the map floating in front of him, and as soon as he did, he could see the Breeding Centre. It was built as big, if not bigger than the academy, and Aeron could see people coming in and out of it.

Not everyone cleared the examination, and Breeding Centre was the best place for many to buy themselves a Pokémon rather than catching one by themselves. The ones in Breeding Centre would have better talent than those in the wild.

Aeron sprinted toward the entrance before two guards stopped him.

"Identification and reason for coming." They looked at Aeron with cold eyes, but he ignored it and tapped his Pokedex before a holographic image appeared before the two guards.

They looked at all the information on the screen and immediately understood why Aeron was there.

Their eyes, too, changed from cold to acknowledgement.

"We have been informed by the academy that you will be visiting us. We just had to make sure you were not someone else." One of them explained.

"I understand."

"We have informed the head office. A breeder will soon guide you to select your starter."

"Thank you so much."

It was not long before a woman wearing a white lab coat walked toward them.

"Aeron Duskborn?"

"That would be me."

"My name is Lia, and I am the head breeder of this centre."

"Ah." Aeron was surprised by her identity and immediately introduced himself even though she knew who he was. "My name is Aeron Duskborn. It is a pleasure meeting you."

Lia smiled before speaking.

"Congratulations. It is not easy to rank at 69th position during the examination."

"Thank you."

Lia walked away, and Aeron followed after her.

"Since you decided to take an egg instead of an already hatched Pokémon, you will pay 5000 pokedollars." Aeron nodded since he already knew this much. "We will show you the best of the best eggs available within our breeding centre. You are free to choose any one of them."

"Among the best?" Aeron was slightly surprised.

"The top 100 receive the same treatment. The only difference is the Pokemon they get are already a few months old, while yours would be an egg. It would not make sense if we did not give you an egg of similar level to other rankers."

"What kind of Pokémon species does this centre has?"

"Just to be clear, since we are in the Kanto region, you will find only Kanto Pokémon within the breeding centre, with very few exceptions." Aeron understood that much. The nearest region to Kanto was Johto, and it was separated from Kanto by Mount Silver, a place dreaded by even the most experienced trainers.

It was rare to see a Pokémon from a different region unless the trainer was from another region.

One could always catch one by visiting a different region. The other method was to buy one from a black market. It was a place Aeron would never consider…..at least yet. And he was happy with a Kanto Pokémon.

He was born in The Kanto region and was proud of it. Kanto was among the strongest, if not the strongest, region in the whole world. But then again, it mattered less to Aeron what region's Pokémon he would get. What mattered the most was the species of the Pokemon.

The Pokémon themselves had no limits of power they could achieve.

Even a common Rattata could be trained into a fearsome Ratticate that could rival a Dragon-type Pokémon. There was a possibility of it, but it was close to zero.

Even though any Pokémon could train to become stronger, the world was not fair. Some Pokémon were inherently stronger than others. They had a great advantage from birth, and the best example of it was Dragon-type Pokémon, known for their fearsome Attack power and strength from the day they were born compared to other Pokémon.

Aeron would not mind if he got a Rattata, but he wished for his starter to be better than that.

"We have the Nido line, Beedrill line, Butterfree line, Golem line, Pidgey line.." Lia spoke about all the different species within the breeding centre, and Aeron carefully heard it.

'Nidoking or Nidoqueen could be a great Pokémon. A future Pidgeot could be a powerhouse as well.' Aeron liked the Nido or Pidgey line the most of all the options told to him.

"By the way, I heard someone from the breeding centre found an unusual egg?" Aeron looked Lia in the eye as he asked. If what the principal said was true, looking at the egg before choosing the one he wanted was a good idea.

A sly smile appeared on Lia's face. "Follow me"

She led Aeron through complicated pathways before the duo reached a research lab. Aeron could see different eggs placed within a room covered by glass walls.

"That is the new guy." She pointed toward the very end. "We do not know what egg it is, but we do know that the talent of the Pokémon inside is better than any egg we have here."

"What?" Aeron could not help but be surprised.

There were no strict grades about a Pokémon's talent since it mainly depended on the parents. If a Pokémon had strong parents, the offspring would have greater skills than their piers born from weak parents.

Lia shrugged as she, too, was surprised at first. "It is something good, but we don't know what it is. Our database only shows us Kanto Pokemon; thus, we believe this Pokémon is from a different region."

"What if I want it?"

"You can take it."

"Huh?"

"Don't be surprised. You can choose one egg from this breeding centre, ANY egg. This one is included. Maybe you were lucky?"

"When and where was it found?"

"Last night. Within the Viridian Forest."

Aeron was conflicted at the moment. He was tempted to get this unknown egg with great talent, but what if what came out of it was God Bidoof? He could never handle the power of such a powerful and perfect being.

He could either get himself the best egg of the Nido or Pidgey line or bet his chances on this unknown egg he had yet to learn about.

"So, what's your decision?" Lia asked. She did not have the whole day to babysit Aeron, and the young trainer knew it. He had to make his choice right at this moment.

He looked at the eggs of the Nido line and then toward the unknown egg. It was black with red spots all over its body, along with a few greenish dots. He could see how it differed from the rest of the eggs in the room. It shone with soft light while radiating a berserk aura he could somehow connect to.

'Hmm? Connect?' Aeron frowned and walked toward the egg, and Lia followed after him. She could not let him walk around alone within the breeding centre.

The closer Aeron approached, the more he felt it. Sometimes you look at someone and know you were made for each other. It was the same feeling Aeron was having at the moment.

"I will take it." His instincts made him say those words, but he did not even regret them.

"Are you sure?"

"Never been surer in my life." Aeron looked at Lia and nodded his head.

"So be it. I will have it prepared for you." She turned toward one of the people working in the room. "Sam, get me an incubator along with the papers. The boy has made his choice."

One of the breeders, Sam, looked at Aeron and then at Lia. He nodded and walked away before coming back with an incubator in his hand.

"The egg is supposed to hatch in 8 hours. Make sure you are somewhere safe and have made your preparations." Lia handed him a tablet with the selling contract, and Aeron read through it before signing it. He then paid the breeding centre the money he owed them.

"The egg is now officially yours."
