Whoops, I just noticed the lake where Mesprit is from is called Lake Verity, not Valor. I corrected it though, surprised no one noticed it.
_____________
Luckily, the thoroughly calmed Mesprit finally floated back to the surface.
Reid immediately went to pull it out of the water.
At that moment, the group that Professor Rowan had previously forced to leave, including Justin, along with researchers from the lab who had noticed the commotion and rushed over with Pokémon to help, all arrived one after another.
After confirming that Mesprit did not need emergency treatment, Reid and Professor Rowan brought it back to the lab with the group.
Before leaving, Reid stared at the lake's surface for a long time.
Only after someone asked did he finally leave with his Typhlosion.
...
Professor Rowan's Lab, Medical Room.
"Professor, are you saying you can't figure out what caused Mesprit to go berserk?"
Reid looked through the transparent glass at the Mesprit, now bandaged and lying motionless in the isolation chamber, and asked in surprise.
"It's not just that we don't know why it went berserk; we also don't know why it's fallen into a deep sleep."
It had been more than three hours since they returned from Lake Verity. After the professor administered some special recovery medicine, Mesprit's injuries were almost completely healed, but it still hadn't woken up.
It's vital signs were perfectly stable, and there was no longer any trace of the previous berserk state.
With an expressionless face, Professor Rowan continued, "During the time you were gone, I stayed at Lake Verity looking for answers but found nothing.
"I also researched specific illnesses that might affect Pokémon, particularly Psychic-types and cases of psychics going berserk, but came up empty."
At this, Professor Rowan seemed to remember something and added, "By the way, didn't Justin mention to you that he thought Mesprit was sick?
"Don't worry too much about that; aside from the few who went with us, everyone here, including Justin, believes it's just an uncommon illness."
"I understand, Professor."
Compared to that minor issue, Mesprit's situation was clearly more important.
What initially seemed like Justin's mistaken diagnosis—confusing psychic power overload with illness—now, considering the current situation and Professor Rowan's explanation, appeared to be much more than just a simple berserk episode.
Psychics and Psychic-type Pokémon going berserk typically happens due their inherent power being too strong for them to control properly.
Such situations could be resolved with proper guidance and training.
Therefore, these events generally progressed from "berserk" to "stabilized."
But Mesprit, a legendary Pokémon known for its calm demeanor in Sinnoh's myths, had shifted from "stable" to "berserk," completely against expectations.
Couple that with the increasing "symptoms of madness" and Mesprit's subsequent deep slumber after being subdued by Typhlosion.
Reid had reviewed every memory related to this situation, but there were no clues to be found.
This problem likely went beyond a mere psychic overload.
Moreover, if even a legendary Pokémon could go berserk for no apparent reason, could ordinary Pokémon be at risk too?
And what about Pokémon that were naturally more aggressive?
No one had the answer.
But if widespread berserk incidents broke out, it could become a catastrophic disaster for both humans and Pokémon.
That was something Reid did not want to see.
After living here for eighteen years, he had developed deep feelings for this wonderful world.
Furthermore, protecting humans and Pokémon was a basic duty as the League Champion.
Professor Rowan, seeing Reid frown, sighed softly.
As his former assistant and half-student, Rowan knew Reid's thoughts could be unconventional and unrestricted by normal thinking patterns.
With Reid's help, they had solved countless difficult problems.
For example, the mystery of Eevee's different evolutions, the unknown evolutionary paths of certain Pokémon, the groundbreaking discovery of Mega Evolution, and whether a Pokémon's power limit was purely mental, among others.
This time, Rowan had called Reid back not only because of his strength to deal with unforeseen situations but also to see if he could find an unorthodox solution.
However, it seemed even Reid had no idea what to do this time.
Rowan was about to contact Professor Oak and Professor Sycamore for further discussion when Reid suddenly turned around.
"Professor, it's true that finding the root cause is difficult now, but that doesn't mean we're completely without clues."
Professor Rowan quickly asked, "What clue?"
"In Sinnoh, each of the three lakes is home to one of the three legendary Pokémon, known as the Lake Guardians, right?"
Professor Rowan nodded.
"They were created by the same Pokémon and each granted emotion, knowledge, or willpower. You're aware of that as well, right?"
Rowan nodded again.
"During my travels over the past few years, I heard a theory. Not only were these three Lake Guardians created by the same Pokémon and given different abilities, but… they were also hatched from the same egg."
"Indeed, according to Professor Carolina's latest research, that theory holds high credibility. But what exactly are you getting at?"
"I'm suggesting… because these three Lake Guardians hatched from the same egg, they are connected on a mental level, even though they're three separate Pokémon with three distinct abilities living in three different locations."
Rowan immediately grasped Reid's point.
"So you're saying we should check the other two Lake Guardians for clues?"
"Exactly!"
In the Pokémon Diamond and Pearl arc, Team Galactic wanted to harness the Lake Guardians' power to control Dialga and Palkia. They even used special bombs to forcefully awaken the Guardians from their slumber by bombing the lakes.
Afterward, two of the Guardians sensed the danger to the third and immediately teleported to help.
Now that Mesprit is in an abnormal state, what could be happening with the other two?
By examining their condition, they might break through the current deadlock.
"I'll contact the Pokémon Centers near Lake Valor and Lake Acuity right away to see if anything unusual has happened recently."
As a prominent figure in Sinnoh, Professor Rowan quickly received replies from both Pokémon Centers.
Though their wording differed slightly, their message was the same.
Everything had been completely normal with no notable incidents.
Upon hearing this, Professor Rowan's expression did not relax. In fact, it became even more serious.
At a time like this, when one of the mentally connected Lake Guardians was clearly experiencing issues, the eerie calm of the other two didn't make any sense.
Something was definitely wrong!
