"...First, we discovered one of her arms. When one of the rescue workers was digging through all of the splintered wood, he came across it and pulled it out, thinking that it was a person who had been buried underneath. He landed on his back and let out a piercing scream. We did scream, that's for sure. We surmised that she had been devoured in its entirety, with her arm still protruding from the mouth as though it were reaching for something or someone—I guess for assistance. This was based on the appearance of the arm. Given that we discovered the infant nearby, we all reasoned that we must have also discovered the mother's remains... Do you want to know how we determined that it belonged to a woman? It was uncomfortably thin, and there was a bracelet wrapped around the wearer's right wrist. After some investigation, we determined that the bracelet belonged to a woman named Amber Onslett."

This is an excerpt from the book "Interviews of Vermillion City's People After the Attack," which can be found here.

I was startled awake and jolted awake when I was roused from my sleep. Even though my vision was blurry and the room remained pitch black, I was still able to make out Rob's grin. He held me by the shoulders from behind.

"Dude, you have no choice but to sign up for membership at the Violet City Gym. Get up!"

I massaged my face and eyes with my fingers. June was wide awake and chirped at me in a merry manner as she approached. I felt a light shiver run down my spine as a brisk breeze brushed against my skin, and I noticed that my teeth were lightly chattering. I picked her up and cradled her in my arms so that I could absorb some of her warmth. She buried her head in my chest and continued talking.

Rob asked, as he watched the leaves move ever-so-slightly in the breeze, "You don't have a coat, do you?" "We have now arrived in the northern region of Johto. I imagine that it is similar to this in the early morning during the summer months, and that it is likely even worse during the other seasons."

When I turned around, I saw Rob massaging the face of his Charizard Pokémon. Even though he was not wearing a coat to protect his exposed arms, he did not appear to be bothered by the cold. The large lizard was wagging its tail in a manner that was reminiscent of an enthusiastic and happy Eevee. My imagination conjured up a scene of Rob tossing a branch for the Charizard to catch while they played fetch. The picture gave me a good laugh.

"Now, stand up and hand over your yoga mat. I knew we would have a lot on our plate today, so I made sure you got up bright and early."

I stood up after putting June down. I yawned deeply and stretched out my arms and back before doing so. I came to a halt and gave some consideration to the activity that I was engaged in at the time. I flexed my back, waiting for a pop to come out of it. I neither felt nor heard anything. For the first time ever, I was actually able to sleep comfortably outside. On that level mat placed atop the rough ground? I was pleasantly taken aback, and I immediately began rolling up the mat. "Obtain the badge, and what else is there to do?" I asked.

He responded by saying, "I have to teach you how to catch Pokémon and how to train them." Rob rummaged around in the pocket of his back shirt.

"Take a gander at this."

Rob reached into his pocket and tossed a PokéDex in my direction. I finally managed to get my fingers around it and grab it. Rob has just given one of his typically goofy laughs.

"Open it," said Rob. "Don't worry about turning the page; I've already done that for you."

I looked into the apparatus. Rob's PokéDex was an identical copy to mine, but it showed significantly more wear and tear. A dull metallic finish was exposed where the red paint once covered most of the cover's surface. As I opened it, I heard the rattle of a small screw that had come loose. I had the suspicion that it was in the cover because it wasn't as rigid as mine was. The lights came on in both screens. On the top screen, there was a map of Johto with a blinking path that indicated the current route. A list of Pokémon that were known to be in the area was displayed on the second screen under the heading "KNOWN POKEMON IN AREA." The list included common Pokémon that live in the forest, such as Pidgey, Rattata, Shinx, Starly, and Swellow, which I was familiar with. A chart with a symbol of the sun, half a sun, a moon, and red dots was located next to each of their names in the list.

Rob insisted that you should click on Shinx.

I had to scroll down to Shinx before I could press the side button. Instead of a map, there was a picture of a Shinx. Its front body was fuzzy and covered in a light blue coloration all over. A dark fur could be seen covering both the animal's tail and its hind legs. It had a small patch of yellow fur covering the front of its wrists, and it also had a patch of yellow hair on the very tip of its tail. The fleshy portions of its ears had a yellow coloration, similar to the iris of its eyes. Its data entry at the bottom of the screen stated that it generates electricity through the extension and contraction of its muscles. When in danger, it emits a glowing light.

Rob instructed us to return to the screen from earlier. It ought to tell you that Shinx are in this area in the morning when you check it.

I activated the Left button on the controller. The map was brought back up to the top screen, and the list of Pokémon was brought back down to the bottom. I looked over the Shinx entry in the encyclopaedia. Under the icon of a full sun was a dot in red that was next to the name of the thing. I reasoned that the fact that a red dot wasn't positioned directly below the half-moon and sun indicated that Shinx had been spotted in the area during the morning hours.
