"As Ash and Pikachu were sneaking through the lush golden grass that was overgrowing Route 1, Ash murmured, "Remember, we're trying to stun here." His voice was scarcely louder than a whisper. I am aware of your desire to demonstrate your prowess, but please make an effort to refrain from turning the first Pokémon we come across into charcoal."
Pikachu let out a sound that was a growl and a hiss at the same time, but the Pokémon did not confirm nor deny the notion. Ash gave a single shake of the head, knowing quite well that insofar as this particular Pikachu was concerned, that was the last answer he was going to get. Ash said that we should begin by utilising the Thunderwave ability first. After Pikachu had acknowledged him, he dropped the matter and allowed the Pokémon, whose senses were significantly more acute than his own, to concentrate on the area around them.
Ash and Pikachu continued their stealthy ascent northward for the next several hours, maintaining complete silence the entire time and proceeding with the utmost caution. Ash made a number of observations to himself about the peculiarity of the fact that he did not come across any Rattata or Pidgey or any other Pokémon while walking along the pathways of Route 1. Before Ash and Pikachu stopped for a brief respite under one of the outermost trees of a small patch of forest protruding up in the vast sea of grassland, a brisk wind arose from the direction of the East, and the sun had already passed the point in its journey across the sky where it was halfway through its journey.
Ash sat down with his back to the tree and set his pack down next to him. "This is just weird," he said as he reflected on the situation. Pikachu clambered nimbly up into the branches of the tree to get a quick look around, but it did not disturb any living thing in the process. It then dashed back down to the ground as Ash pulled out one of the seedcakes that he brought with him on his journeys into the wild and wrapped it in plastic. The trainer continued, "We must be halfway to Viridian by now," as he unwrapped the tough seedcake and broke off one section for Pikachu, "and we haven't seen so much as a Spearow."
Pikachu responded with a squeak and immediately began nibbling on the seedcake. Meanwhile, Ash took a bite out of it for himself. After taking a sip from the canteen that was attached to his pack, Ash added, "We should probably notify the Professor about this when we get back." "And it's likely that we'll be coming back to you very soon." After finishing the seedcake, he gave a thoughtful glance to the heavens, re-stuffing the plastic wrap into the bag he was carrying before standing up. "I don't feel like spending the night in Viridian."
Ash and Pikachu started their journey back to Pallet Town, sacrificing some of their previous caution in exchange for quicker movement. The only time they had to stop was when Pikachu froze up in front of a small thicket that was located just off the Western side of what passed for the main road. Ash took a step forward alongside Pikachu and peered into the darkness of the thicket. "What is it?" he questioned. While paying close attention, he picked up on a soft rustling sound as well as a faint growl. Very quickly, he noticed two points of light peering out at him from behind one of the bushes. One of the bushes was directly in front of him. Pikachu's back arched, his yellow fur sprang out in needlelike protrusions, and the crimson spots on his cheeks crackled with static electricity.
This is it, Ash thought to himself, his exhilaration and nervousness balancing each other out in perfect proportion.
Even though today is only my first day working as a trainer, I already know that I'm going to be able to catch something more interesting than a rodent.
As the growling became louder and the dog-like outline took on a more orange tone, a little form developed around the eyes of the creature. As Pikachu's fur was now standing on end, giving him the appearance of almost being a Sandslash, Ash took a step back and let Pikachu step between him and the new Pokémon. Pikachu's appearance was almost identical to that of a Sandslash.
Ash murmured, "A Growlithe," as the corner of his mouth twitched into a grin. "A Growlithe," he repeated. Now he was speaking to his Pokémon, telling it to "be careful." "I don't see how this could possibly be simple."
Growlithe was the first to attack, barking loudly and hurling itself forward before opening its mouth wide to reveal its astonishingly sharp fangs and angling itself to fall down on top of Pikachu. Pikachu, who had successfully avoided similar attacks in the past, rolled to one side and easily placed itself out of harm's way. Positioning the wild Pokémon in between himself and Ash as the trainer took a metal baton from his bag with one hand, and readied his only pokeball with the other hand. Ash jumped back to put himself in a more secure position as Pikachu, who had successfully avoided similar attacks in the past, rolled to one side and easily placed itself out of harm's way.
Growling uneasily, the canine-like Pokémon looked around wildly, trying to make up its mind whether it should attack the trainer and leave itself open to being attacked by Pikachu or attack Pikachu and leave itself vulnerable to being kicked by Ash. Pikachu vanished in a blur of speed and materialised in midair directly behind the wild Pokémon, between Growlithe and Ash. The Growlithe had hesitated for too long though, and Pikachu had taken advantage of the opportunity. Pikachu had already shot a crackling bolt of electricity from its cheeks, which hit the Growlithe in the back of its neck and sent talons of energy racing across its spine. The orange dog attempted to leap forward, but Pikachu had already fired the bolt.
Growlithe let out a piercing yelp and then collapsed, which immediately prompted Ash to take a step back and aim the pokeball directly at the dumbfounded Pokémon. Pikachu landed a step in front of Ash as the pokeball opened up and hovered over Growlithe for a fraction of a second. During that time, Growlithe transformed into a white silhouette of itself and was quickly sucked back into the pokeball. Pikachu landed a step in front of Ash as the pokeball opened up. Both Ash and Pikachu waited with their breath gripped in anticipation, but the pokeball did not shake even once, and the red light on the locking mechanism did not turn black, indicating that the Pokémon contained therein was, in all likelihood, still alive.
Ash said, "Gotcha!" before sprinting to the edge of the bush to retrieve the pokeball and celebrating his victory. "Way to go Pikachu! You were amazing!"
Pikachu gave Ash a look that seemed to say, "Well, what did you expect?" after giving him a nod of agreement and approaching him with the air of a proud cat rather than a shy mouse. Pikachu then looked up at his trainer and nodded.
"What I don't get," remarked Ash as he cautiously gazed around the tangled coppice, "is why a lone Growlithe was out this far South when the packs remain closer to the North." "Growlithe are typically seen in packs," replied Ash.
Ash threw the pokeball, which resulted in the ball bursting open. The Growlithe immediately emerged out of the energy that was shot from the little red ball, and it began roaring at Ash without any hesitation. Pikachu moved in front of the Growlithe and its new trainer, flashing its bright pink cheeks and exposing its sharp white teeth. The two Pokémon locked eyes with one another for a considerable amount of time before Ahs moved forward next to Pikachu, knelt down, and whispered to the yellow Pokémon to calm down while scratching Pikachu behind the ears. Pikachu eventually calmed down. Pikachu seemed to loosen up just a little bit, and the trainer redirected his attention to the Growlithe as Pikachu took a stride forward that was cautious yet confident.
Ash murmured, "Easy," maintaining his composure as he gently reached behind his back with one hand and showed the Growlithe that the other hand was empty by holding it up. As Ash pulled something out of his bag, the dog's growling persisted and became increasingly intense. He reassured me, "I'm not going to hurt you," and I believed him.
Ash brought his other hand back in front of him and opened his fingers, revealing the young Pokémon in front of him the small red cube that was hidden in his palm. "I'd much rather reward you for obeying me than punish you for disobeying me," the trainer said, letting a small grin tug up at his lip. "I'd much rather reward you for obeying me than punish you for disobeying me." He moved his hand closer to the Pokémon's muzzle while holding out the cinnamon-scented block for the Growlithe to take. His hand was less than a foot away from the Pokémon's nose. The Growlithe continued to growl and then drew its lower lip back, exposing its sharp fangs.
"Enough of that," Ash remarked, his tone becoming more grouchy and his face becoming more sallow. The Growlithe was given a warning, but it disregarded it and proceeded to snarl and growl. "Enough!" As he moved forward an inch and barked, Ash's voice echoed through the woods, and it appeared as though his eyes were glowing. Growlithe let out a startled yelp and retreated a few steps as Ash leaned back and levelled his gaze at the Pokémon. He directed all of his mental faculties towards convincing Growlithe, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that he, Ash, the trainer, was not only in charge, but also merciful. Growlithe let out the startled yelp and retreated a few steps as Ash leaned back again and levelled his gaze
The Pokémon stopped its growling and regarded Ash for a considerable amount of time with a mixture of interest and caution, with caution being the predominant emotion from what Ash could tell. The Growlithe squatted on its haunches in a methodical manner, as if the motion were causing it some level of discomfort. It was by no means calm; Ash could obviously feel the strained muscles in its legs as it prepared to jump and kick, but the Pokémon had at least stopped snarling, and Ash was aware that for a creature that had literally just been captured, that was sufficient.
The Growlithe only twitched a little bit in sudden anxiety as Ash tossed the flavoured cube, which is considered a treat for most Pokémon, to it. After that, the Growlithe allowed its vision to dart between Ash and the cube. "Good boy," Ash said, without a trace of condescension in his voice, as the wary Growlithe bent down, keeping its eyes on Ash the entire time as it snapped up the cube. "Good boy," Ash said.
When the Growlithe's eyes widened in surprise, Ash was about to laugh out loud; however, the Pokémon trainer restrained himself only in time to observe that the Pokémon likely sensed a sudden surge of flavour. Growlithe masticated on the cube for a brief period of time before gulping it down, rapaciously licking its chops, and turning its attention back to Ash. Ash reasoned that it must be living in the wild in its entirety since it hadn't even tasted a treat before. He met the Pokémon's gaze once more, and this time he noticed a glint in Growlithe's eye. It was a look of surprise that Ash was familiar with. It was the same look Pikachu had given Oak on the day the illustrious Professor had captured it as a baby and used a similar treat to calm Pikachu's nerves. Pikachu had given Oak that look.
At that very instant, the wind shifted directions and started blowing from the west, carrying with it the aroma of the dense undergrowth. Instantaneously, Pikachu became rigid, and even Ash could smell the rotting flesh nearby. The trainer reached up and covered his mouth and nose with a cloth before taking a step back, which was followed by the trainer calling back the Growlithe. It wasn't so much that the stench was overwhelming as that Ash was aware that the scent of death was nearly always accompanied by disease of some kind or another.
