Ash and Misty had travelled what they estimated to be more than half the distance between Pallet and Viridian by the time lunchtime rolled around. The morning had passed without any significant occurrences. Misty had re-enclosed Blastoise in his pokeball so that it could get some rest. The two individuals made the decision to take a break, eat their meal, and relax in the shade of the solitary tree that stood out from the surrounding field of grass. Ash had a strong suspicion that it was the same tree that he and Pikachu had been resting beneath just prior to encountering Growlithe.
When Ash had finished his seedcake and was standing up, he said, "You know." He cast his eyes over as much of the aircraft as he was able to see, and then he focused on a cluster of woody brush that was not too far away. Misty continued to sit in the shade of the tree and consume the provisions she had brought with her. "I caught Growlithe less than a mile from here," he said, pointing to the thicket a stone's throw away. "I caught Growlithe less than a mile from here." "It was right there in that brush," the witness said.
Misty moved in the same direction as he did, but because she was unable to see over the top of the grass, she did not bother to stand. She enquired about it in a casual manner, "What are you thinking?" "Would you like to go have a look?"
"You read my thinking," Ash nodded. "I want to go back to the location and take another look at it to see what changed. That is assuming that that is okay with you."
Misty ate every last crumb of her seedcake before standing up and letting Blastoise out of his Pokeball. She said, "I don't mind," to the question. "Even though you weren't planning on going to look, somebody needs to make sure you don't end up there." Ash smiled back at her and she gave him a small smile in reply.
Misty and Ash made their way carefully across the plain to the edge of the thicket, where the grass abruptly stopped growing and was replaced by tangled bushes and sturdy trees. Blastoise was in front of them, and Pikachu and Growlithe were following closely behind. Ash took a few steps forward, walked around Blastoise, and then peeked into the underbrush. The brush was still dense enough that he couldn't see to the middle of the little island as it was the day before, so Ash went inside while keeping Growlithe close by him and Pikachu ready on his shoulder. Misty made her way around the perimeter for a while before beginning to approach from the flank while maintaining eyeshot on Ash.
This time, Ash was prepared; he removed a handkerchief from his pocket, tied it over his nose, tucked the bottom of the cloth under the collar of his shirt, and breathed through his mouth instead of his nose. Despite this, the aroma was almost overpowering for him when he entered the glade in the heart of the forest, and it caused his eyes to well up with tears. The sight almost brought him to his knees. A good number of the deceased Growlithe had begun the early phases of the decomposition process, and the trainer who had been lying more in the water than on the ground had progressed further than any of the Pokémon.
Ash was immediately put on high alert by a quick hiss from Pikachu, and when the yellow Pokémon's fur burst into a coat of needles, some of which poked Ash's cheeks like razor-grass, the trainer took a quick step backwards. Pikachu's fur burst into a coat of needles. Ash halted as he approached the enormous lump that was lying just a few steps in front of him and asked, "Where-?" Yeah, he mumbled to himself.
There was a Fearow that appeared to have passed away and was found lying in a mess of feathers on the ground. Growlithe picked up the scent of the bird and dashed into the clearing as soon as it did so, landing less than a metre away from the Fearow. It then started barking and growling. When Ash spotted Misty emerge from the undergrowth with Blastoise off to his right, he took another step back and was forced to take another step back when the Fearow awakened and raised its head up to gaze at the Growlithe that was now roaring. The bird's long, bleeding neck convulsed and jerked involuntarily, as though it was using an enormous amount of effort to keep its head held up. It slowly lowered itself to the ground, maintaining its focus on Ash by glancing at her out of the corner of one eye while exhaling in short, shallow breaths that caused the blood-splattered feathers to grate against one another.
Ash realised it was barely clinging to life as a sense of shame stabbed through his chest as he thought about it.
Growlithe let out a cry and thrust itself forward, exposing its teeth in preparation to bite and tear. Fearow closed its eye as Growlithe quickly closed the distance that separated them, and Ash noticed that the Pokémon's body began to relax just a tiny bit.
"Stop!" Ash yelled, and the sound of his voice reverberated through the bush like a brief clap of thunder. Growlithe immediately came to a halt as Misty jerked back in surprise and he saw it. The dog cast a quick glance in Ash's direction for barely a fraction of a second before refocusing its attention on the Fearow watch, which was too exhausted to even open one eye to watch the action. "Down!" The booming tone of Ash's voice returned, this time far more pronounced than before.
Growlithe appeared to be unable to resist the simple instruction as it caused him to trip and fall to the ground. When Ash went closer, the creature's mouth clenched tight and a moan came out of its throat. Growlithe moved backwards in a shuffling or scooting motion as Ash positioned himself between the canine and the Fearow and pulled a pokeball from his waistband. He hurled the ball at the bird, and it snapped open just before it reached the matted feathers since it was so close to them. The Fearow vanished in a flash of white light, which the pokeball devoured with a voracious appetite. After making a final clicking sound, the orb fell to the ground.
