.....
The rest of that day proceeded normally without any problems. The majority of Ash's time was spent, much to his own dismay, just consisting of him lying in bed and recuperating from the wound he sustained. However, Oak would allow him to stand up and stretch every once in a while. During these occasions, Ash would eagerly check on Pikachu and Growlithe, who were both stationed upstairs to keep watch on what was left of the laboratory. Oak would allow him to stand up and stretch every once in a while.
Oak spent the day dividing his time between looking after Ash, ensuring that his grandson was recovering appropriately, and searching through the wreckage that was located in the upper part of the structure. The laboratory that belonged to the Professor had been the first building that the Gyarados had assaulted, and as a result, it was the one that had incurred the most damage. Oak maintained an optimistic attitude and never gave any indication that the significant loss of costly equipment was bothering him to a significant degree.
Misty, one of the three humans still alive in Pallet Town, put up the greatest effort out of the three. Having taken it upon herself to keep a safe perimeter around the laboratory, she roamed the ruins of the town while being constantly escorted by her Blastoise and two Staryu. She never wandered more than a kilometre or so away from the laboratory. The trainer would occasionally detour to inspect the wreckage of a deserted structure, and more often than not, she would find something of worth there, which she would then either stow away in her pack or wear slung across her back. Upon arriving back at the research facility shortly before the sun began to drop, Misty requested that Professor Oak assist her in sifting through part of the stockpile to identify what may be utilised and what should be discarded.
Misty was examining the contents of her bag while she was sitting cross-legged on the ground in front of Oak. In her hand, she was holding a small metal box. The container glistened with a crystalline glow as it reflected the waning rays of sunlight that were allowed to enter through the enormous gaps in the roof. Misty said, "This is probably the most valuable thing I've found so far," as she flipped the latch and opened the box for the Professor to look at the contents. "This is probably the most valuable thing I've found so far," "Of course, none of them have anything in them."
When Oak investigated the contents of the room, he arched one eyebrow. In the bottom of the box were six spheres, each of which was about the size of a large marble. They were sitting side by side in foam depressions. The lower halves of each were white, just like the lower halves of all pokeballs, but the upper halves of these particular things were grey and featured a golden letter 'U' emblazoned across the face. "Ultraballs," murmured Oak, shocked. I had no idea that anyone in Pallet Town had access to these or that they were even within their financial means.
Misty seemed as like she was caught off guard when she explained, "Pokeballs in general are precious, and these looked distinctive so I believed they must have some worth to them." "How much do you think they are worth?"
The Professor affirmed that it is possible for Ultraballs to successfully capture weaker and younger Pokémon. "They are even able to subdue Pokémon that are at their maximum level of power. An Ultraball is worth more money on the informal market than the majority of Gym Leaders make in a month, and to the appropriate person, such as a man like myself, these could be worth a lot more than just money."
Misty's first reaction was to subconsciously tilt her head to the side and then slightly lower the lid of the case. "Why would they be more useful to you than they would be to other people?" is a reasonable question to ask.
Oak let out a soft giggle and raised his hands in a conciliatory manner. The Professor admonished the student to tone down their defensive demeanour. "I'm not intending to steal them from you, but I would like to make a deal with you to exchange something else for them. You see, before I started studying Pokémon, I used to spend a lot of time learning how to capture Pokémon, and I have a method at my disposal that allows me to transform an Ultraball into a much more powerful device with an incalculable amount of value; a ball that can capture any Pokémon without fail... a Masterball. If I use this method, I will be able to capture any Pokémon."
Misty made a very slight pursing motion with her lips. She responded with some trepidation, remarking that "it sounds a little too good to be true." "But I'm paying attention to what you're saying."
Oak leaned back in his chair and asked, "How about this?" "In return for those six Ultraballs, I will offer you ten Greatballs and give you my word that as soon as I finish the Masterballs, I will send you two of the final six. "
Misty took a little break before continuing. "Why haven't I ever seen any on the market or heard about them anywhere else if these Masterballs are so fantastic and you can manufacture them out of Ultraballs? In that case, why don't you mass produce them so that you can make a significant amount of money?"
"All valid questions, as Oak put it, and most of the solutions are rather straightforward... Constructing a masterball is a very challenging and time-consuming endeavour. Just producing one would take me between six and seven months of my time. And in response to the second part of your question, I am the only person in existence who is aware of how to produce them. Since I do not wish for the technique to become common knowledge, I have only produced a total of two of them throughout the entirety of my life. I have given both of them to the Elite Four in exchange for the funds and resources necessary to establish this laboratory."
Misty uttered these words with a disbelieving tone, "I'm still not sure I buy it." Why, if you've only made two, would you be willing to make six now? If you've only made two, why?
"Look around," replied Oak. "At the beginning, I decided to make Masterballs in order to earn money for the establishment of this laboratory. Since the laboratory was destroyed, I will need to begin again from scratch, but to be honest, I do not have the financial resources necessary to do it on my own. I would keep one for myself, I would give one to my grandson to help him on his journey, and I would give you two because it would have been you who enabled me to make them in the first place. I would plan to sell two of them for the money to start up another laboratory, I would keep one for myself, I would give my grandson one to help him on his journey, and I would give you two. Does it seem like a reasonable compromise to you?"
Misty let out a sigh and looked about the room for a brief while. "That seems like too good of a deal to be true... But if you add in something more to make the sale more appealing, you've got a deal on your hands."
Oak remained calm as he asked, "Name it." "I don't have anything that would be considered really precious, but I'd trade anything that's here in this lab," she said.
Misty pointed out with two fingers to emphasis her point that there were actually two things she wanted to mention. "After that, she said, "Body armour, two sets of it, one for me and one for Ash." Even if we have the most powerful Pokémon in the world, it won't help us much if some flying debris or a wild Pokémon manages to kill us with only one shot despite our best efforts."
The professor responded with a "ah" as though the proposal had taken him by surprise. "Even though I can't promise that I have anything that will work, I'll take a look over everything I own. The truth is, "He took a pause. "There's a possibility that they have something over at the watchtower beside the wall. I'm going to pop in and take a peek."
Misty answered, "No rush, I'll wait," as she crossed her arms and gave a slight smirk while she did so.
The rest of the night was devoid of any further noise. Oak came back with two sets of light, rudimentary armour after first conducting a search at the guardhouse. The armour consisted of hardened, black, plastic plates that were fitted over a dark green, woven cloth backing. The plates were designed to protect the wearers' core vital areas, as well as their forearms and shins. Even more impressively, he returned carrying a pair of safety boots for Misty to wear. After finishing their business quickly, the two went to supper with Ash and briefed him on their transaction during the course of the meal.
At that point in the night, Ash had almost entirely recovered, and Oak determined that it was safe for him to begin moving around with a greater degree of vigour. He concluded that there was a low possibility of the wound becoming infected again. After ensuring that the armour could be worn over his clothes without causing any discomfort or difficulty in mobility, Ash stowed it away for the night after giving it a test run and ensuring that it was a good fit. Misty did the same thing and was impressed that the Professor chose boots and equipment that were a good fit for her. She then suggested that everyone go to bed early if Ash and Misty were going to get an early start in the morning.
Misty complied with Ash's request and took the bed, while Professor Sycamore slept on the floor. Pikachu and Growlithe accompanied Ash as he stood guard for a moment as he continued his evaluation of the Pokémon he had just acquired. He ordered Pikachu to keep watch on the upper level of the research facility while Growlithe and he maintained a steady posture at the entrance to what was left of the building. For the course of the shift that lasted for four hours, Ash inched steadily closer to Growlithe, a fact that the Pokémon did not fail to notice, but Growlithe never once made a move to move away from him.
"You can see," Ash said as he cautiously extended his hand towards the wary Pokémon. "See." It was almost exactly eleven o'clock at this point. "I'm not a monster," he continued, while very slowly placing his hand on top of Growlithe's head and scratching the canine's fur, being extremely careful not to let his fingers come anywhere near the canine's neck. "I'm not a monster," he said at the end. He said, capturing the Pokémon's complete attention with the statement, "But I am your master." "And you will submit to my authority."
