700 power stones =1 bonus chapter
Sixty-four, thirty-two, sixteen.
One round a day, the battles were progressing incredibly fast.
Since his match with Tyson, no Trainer dared to underestimate Chris anymore, even though he was a breeder.
Starting from Round 64, the number of Pokémon each side could use increased from one to two. With this added flexibility, Chris still kept Makuhita in the starting lineup to preserve his strength.
However, by the quarterfinals, Chris had yet to be forced to use his second Pokémon, as Makuhita had decisively defeated all his opponents.
Beginning each match with Fake Out, Makuhita would disorient his opponent's Pokémon. No matter what type it was, if it was hit by Fake Out, the next move would inevitably be its downfall.
It was rumored that the Trainers who had been defeated by Chris's Makuhita even formed a small group to study ways to counter its Fake Out tactics.
But today, a determined heroine had declared she would put an end to Chris's "unfeeling" methods.
"The Breeding Department has done well to get this far in the military training competition," she said.
"Too bad your luck has run out. You've run into me!" Amy sneered as she hurled her harsh words at Chris before the match.
"Are you ready to be beaten by me?" Amy taunted.
"Ah yes, yes, yes," Chris responded casually, already in position on the battlefield.
That's right—Chris's opponent in the quarterfinals was Amy.
Chris hadn't expected this matchup, but Amy had anticipated it.
Chris was surprised that Amy made it to the top eight, but Amy thought to herself, "Finally, I'll defeat him!"
Unbothered by Chris's dismissive attitude, Amy remained confident she would teach him a lesson in battle.
Both Trainers took their places, and the referee began announcing the rules.
"Now, we proceed with the quarterfinals of the freshman military training competition at Dragon University. Trainer Chris will face Trainer Amy. Each Trainer may use two Pokémon, and switching is not allowed. Begin!"
"Now, both Trainers, release your Pokémon at the same time!"
Chris and Amy both grabbed a Poké Ball from their waists and tossed them into the air.
A flash of silver light appeared, and their Pokémon landed in front of them.
Chris's lead was Makuhita.
"Maku~!" Makuhita roared, its deep voice filled with energy.
As it had leveled up, its body had grown bulkier and stronger.
Chris suspected that this increase in size wasn't just due to training, but also from Makuhita lounging on the couch, watching TV and drinking Coke.
Makuhita "Maku~ Maku~" protested about that accusation for quite a while.
Chris didn't fully understand, but he guessed the general meaning was: "Even if I drink Coke, eat popcorn, and stay up late watching TV shows, I'm still a strong fighter!"
Amy sent out Pidgeotto.
Her ace was a Water-type Pokémon, as she specialized in water Pokémon at Dragon University, which was famous for its water Trainers. But there was no rule that said she could only use Water-types.
This Pidgeotto was a special surprise Amy had prepared for Chris!
"Go, Amy!" Victoria cheered from the sidelines, and others joined in, showing their support for Amy.
Most of Amy's supporters were male classmates, while Chris's fans were mostly female.
The referee confirmed both sides were ready, raised his hand, and brought the flag down. "Battle begin!"
"Pidgeotto, fly high!"
"Makuhita, Bulk Up!" Amy and Chris shouted their commands simultaneously.
Pidgeotto soared into the sky, quickly gaining altitude.
For Flying-type Pokémon, their greatest advantage was their ability to fly above ground-based opponents, allowing them to launch long-range attacks without fear of retaliation. This was Amy's strategy now.
From up in the air, Flying-types could strike at their leisure, while grounded Pokémon could only brace themselves, unable to fight back.
This was exactly Amy's plan.
As for Chris, he predicted that Amy would rely on Pidgeotto's long-range aerial advantage. So, he chose a strategy that balanced both offense and defense. If it were any other Pokémon grounded like Makuhita, it might have been an easy target.
"Maku~!" Makuhita struck a bodybuilding pose, and a flash of white light rippled across its body, significantly boosting its attack and defense.
"Gust!" Amy commanded, launching her first ranged attack.
"Pidgeotto~~!" Pidgeotto cried out softly as its wings beat rapidly, creating gusts of wind that barreled down toward Makuhita.
"Vacuum Wave!" Chris responded calmly.
Makuhita raised a fist, gathering energy, and then released a blast of compressed air, which formed a shockwave that clashed with Pidgeotto's Gust in mid-air.
The two forces collided and exploded, canceling each other out with a resounding *bang*.
"Vacuum Wave?" Amy raised an eyebrow. She hadn't seen Chris use this move in his previous matches. This was a problem. With Vacuum Wave at Makuhita's disposal, Pidgeotto's long-range attacks were pointless—they'd just be blocked every time.
Time to switch tactics and move in for close combat.
"Plan B, let's go!" Amy thought. "Twister!" she commanded sharply.
Pidgeotto flapped its wings vigorously, summoning a small Twister that whirled toward Makuhita, carrying gravel and debris along with it.
"Protect," Chris called out confidently.
Makuhita crossed its arms, creating an invisible barrier of energy. The transparent shield blocked the Twister as it approached.
Just then, something broke through the Twister with force—it was Pidgeotto! Hiding within the swirling winds, Pidgeotto had timed its attack perfectly. As Makuhita was busy with the Twister, Pidgeotto struck.
"End it, Pidgeotto! Use Aerial Ace!" Amy shouted. Her Twister had been nothing but a distraction, a cover for the real assault.
Pidgeotto's speed suddenly doubled, its sharp gaze locking onto Makuhita. It shot through the collapsing Twister, piercing the invisible shield with its sharp beak, and struck Makuhita squarely in the chest.
In the games, Aerial Ace is a "must-hit" move, and combined with Flying's advantage over Fighting-types, this attack was bound to deal serious damage—possibly even knock Makuhita out!
"Nice strategy," Chris complimented. "An ordinary Makuhita would probably be down."
However, his Makuhita was no ordinary one. With a perfect V for physical strength, it had been raised on Pokéblocks and trained rigorously with Combusken and Frogadier. All that extra body fat wasn't for nothing!
"Knock Off!" Chris shouted.
Despite the pain, Makuhita's eyes glinted with determination. A cold flash barely visible in its narrowed gaze, it swung its right fist swiftly.
Pidgeotto sensed danger and tried to retreat, but Makuhita's fist moved like lightning, faster than the bird could react.
Like a meteor streaking through the sky, the fist connected in an instant.
*Boom!* Pidgeotto was slammed into the ground before it had a chance to escape, and its held item, a Sharp Beak, fell to the ground.
"Arm Thrust!" Chris didn't give Pidgeotto a moment to recover.
Makuhita charged forward, relentlessly striking with its palms, delivering blow after blow in rapid succession. It looked like a scene straight out of a martial arts movie.
*Dong Dong Dong!!!*
