Twelve, thirteen, fourteen… Feng Mian performed like usual. Her body moved on it's own while she was deep in her thoughts. The music went past her ears and the only thing she heard was her own heartbeat. Finally after the fourteenth song she opened her eyes. The last song she had to perform was the song The Ash Grove. She stood up and tried again asking if the singer could be changed, or if she could perform something else.
"I'm really sorry miss Mian, but we really can't do that." The timid girl again answered with a worried expression. "Please just try your best and I believe it'll go well!"
"Ok…" She answered and walked defeatedly back to the flygel. She sat there staring at the keys for a long time.
"The Ash Grove…" She mutters to herself and finally put her fingers on the keyes and started playing. This time she could hear the music. It sounded calm and beautiful to her ears, but her mind was still a mess. As she started singing she tried to imagine the words. What they meant, what they sounded like, What was the song about… She sang the first verse with a cheerful tone, but then her mind started to wonder. She started remembering those years before her darkness. The years she spend with music and light. The years she was happy with no fear in her mind. But then… She was sent away…
Her head started hurting as she kept on singing. But now the song she sang sounded angry and scared. Her mind went through countless memories. The time she spent alone in they place… The time when she met that person there. The time she finally thought she'd be free… Only to suffer even more in the hands of the person she was the closest to.
"'Twas there while the little black bird was cheerfully singing. I first met my loved one the joy of my life" The lyrics of the song only helped her to make her suffer more. There she had been singing like a little bird, when they first met. She had been happy to meet shuts a person in that dark and insane place…
Towards the third verse her head was hurting so much that she almost couldn't stand it.
"My lips smile no longer, my heart loses it's lightness; No dream of the future my spirit can sheer." As she sang these words she suddenly stood up. No dream, no future… These words rang in her mind as she collapsed on the flygel.
This was actually my first time listening to the song The Ash Grove and I was surprised of how well it actually suited the story. The songs lyrics and melody are perfect for this scene and i still strongly recommend anyone to listen to it to understand the chapter better.
