~~ In the Study ~~
Restless, Mr. Gonzalez paces his study, disturbed by Dr. Kane's call.
He ponders, "Who wishes to meet her? Is it Irina? Should I check if she has arrived to meet her?" The call leaves his mind unsettled.
A knock on the door interrupts his thoughts. Mrs. Gonzalez enters at his invitation.
"Dear, you must be tired. Here is some warm milk," she offers, her voice carrying a sombre tone.
Mr. Gonzalez looks at her and questions, "Couldn't you have asked a househelp to bring me that? How is Garret? Is he taking his medicine?"
She looks down and answers, "He's not taking it; he's completely shattered and unstable."
Concern etches Mr. Gonzalez's face as he sighs, "My heir is suffering today. He loved his wife. Sigh!"
Mrs. Gonzalez seethes, "Garret this, Garret that! All you think about is Irina's son. What about my son? You still consider that incapable son as your heir and not Mackerel? He worked for this company for years without any benefit from you. Garret must go. He's lucky today, but it won't last. Soon you'll regret everything and everything will be in my hands."
Continuing her performance, she sheds tears, "Dear, you should come and see your son now. He calls out for Peony everywhere. In every empty space of the house. He has gone insane dear."
Mr. Gonzalez responds, "This won't do. I need to fix his health as soon as possible. Honey, don't worry; I will manage everything. You should rest now."
Mrs. Gonzalez implores, "Please don't subject him to shock therapy. Even if it's effective, I don't want my son to undergo such inhumane treatment."
Mr. Gonzalez believes in effective treatment over any complications. He says, "Even if it's inhumane, this is the best one. Maybe, he will recover finally."
Mrs. Gonzalez continues pleading him, "Dear, please don't do this to him, he is grief-stricken and survived a massive explosion, even we are shocked. He has simply lost control of his emotions ."
Mr. Gonzalez holds her hand and affirms, "But this is for the best. We have no choice left. I can't imagine handling him without you. Even though he isn't your child, you have always treated him as your own."
Mrs. Gonzalez responds, "I'm a mother, dear. Why wouldn't I treat him as my own just because he's your previous wife's son? The poor child is innocent. The moment his mother left him alone on a chilling night, I embraced him as my own child. You tell me dear, how could I have the heart to leave that freezing child alone?"
Mr. Gonzalez falls silent, his mind wavering to the events of the past.
At the same time a series of smashing sounds follow,
'THUD!' ... 'SMASH!' .... 'SMASH!'
A loud thud is heard followed by continuous smashing sounds coming from Garret's room.
Mr. Gonzalez and Mrs. Gonzalez rushes immediately to his bedroom to check on him.
As they step inside the room, broken pieces of medicine bottles are scattered everywhere. Garret continues to smash things around screaming "Peony, you cannot leave me! You stop me. Unless you stop me I will continue destroying everything."
Mrs. Gonzalez rushes to Garret, "My son, stop this. Peony won't return if you continue destroying everything."
"Won't return? Mom, are you saying she won't ever come back?" Garret frustratedly questions.
"Dear, look at his condition. He isn't himself anymore," Mrs. Gonzalez sheds crocodile tears while provoking Mr. Gonzalez.
Mackerel, appearing to hear the chaos, tells him with a mixture of anger and sorrow, "Because of you, she died. You left her in the car and put her to her death. You destroyed her life and her family, brother Garret. She gained only pain marrying you. If you hadn't forced her, she wouldn't have suffered such a cruel fate."
Mrs. Gonzalez is stunned by her own son's behaviour. Garret, fueled by fury, hurls at Mackerel, "Who are you to tell me that? I love Peony. You have no right to talk about her!"
Mackerel persists, "What you call love is nothing more than possessiveness. You treated her as if she were your property. Forcing her on your whim and using her for your own benefit."
Mrs. Gonzalez turns to Mackerel, asking, "What are you saying, son?"
"Mom, I'm telling the truth. He needs to face it today. You can forgive him every time, but he's in the wrong. His possessiveness cost someone's life!" Mackerel, usually calm, is clearly frustrated with Garret.
Mr. Gonzalez, succumbing to the escalating tension, asserts, "Silence!"
Turning to Mackerel first, he advises, "You shouldn't interfere in his matters. He may be your brother, but you have no right to dictate what he should or shouldn't do. And Garret, stop this nonsense now! I will bring back Peony for you."
The entire room falls into a hushed stillness, except for Garret, who is elated. He exclaims, "Really, Dad?"
"Yes, really," he nods.
Mrs. Gonzalez approaches Mr. Gonzalez, her heart pounding, thinking she's caught for her actions, and asks, "Have you gone mad? From where will you bring back Peony?"
"Shyla will take Peony's place," he whispers.
Mrs. Gonzalez gasps, "What? How?"
"Just wait and see how I persuade her to take Peony's place for my son. I've heard she can do anything for money, so let me see how much she can bear. Daring to tarnish my son's reputation at his wedding and today! She'll face the consequences," Mr. Gonzalez reveals, whispering his evil plans to Mrs. Gonzalez.
Mrs. Gonzalez, the mastermind behind the explosion, gulps, fearing the threat as her own.
