Beast (3)

I listened to what happened on the day of my rescue as though I had viewed the whole thing. I sat there, the puppy in my lap as the two periodically switched to who was talking as they filled me in on all of the details.

"When we first entered the house, we thought it was a one-story and that it would be easy to locate a lot of the victims. But when we got inside, we noticed that it was closer to a maze than a house." The deep-voiced man said, who I now know as Sir Andrew.

It's weird that I didn't think of asking their names before. I mean, I didn't even think about my name until someone spoke it. Maybe I'm just oblivious to names...Or it could be that a part of me already knew, but my memories were not there to actually tell me the names.

"Yeah, it was quite hard to figure out the basic layout of the house," Beth, the medic who had been taking care of me and was among the three people who I interacted with so far added to the story. "We were prepared, but the enchantments took us off guard."

"Enchantments?" I looked at her with confusion clearly written on my face. Why does that word not sound familiar? So far, most of the words I have encountered have sounded familiar to some extent. Along with other words that I know, but do not know why I recall them.

"Um, how do I explain this?" She looked around, searching for something as a 'light bulb' expression suddenly appeared on her features. "Let's go inside the room so i can explain properly."

I nodded as the two headed inside. I got up as the puppy started to whine. "It's okay, little guy, I'm just going inside the room. You are coming with me." With that, the puppy's tail started wagging in excitement as it followed me inside the room.

The room was brightly lit, which was contrasted with the dark gloomy hallway that we were just in. The lights produced a soft glow through the room, giving it a homely vibe.

Even though I don't understand what home is, I still feel it gives that type of vibe. I looked around as I spotted a big blackboard across the room. It was one of those blackboards that was movable and could be flipped to reveal a whiteboard behind.

Beth stood next to the blackboard as she carefully drew something with a white piece of rock in her hand. I looked at her in amazement as the rock produced images on the board which seemed as though they were letters encased in swirls and loops.

Although they were quickly drawn, the image looked to be powerful as it stood out against the blackboard. "What is that?" I pointed to the image Beth drew as a smile appeared on her face.

"This is an enchantment. So basically, an enchantment is a spell that can be cast by certain people. It can take many forms. The one we encountered were spells that made the layout seem like a maze."

"A maze?"

"Yeah, if we got caught in the enchantment, then we would be going in circles and never find the way out. Luckily Sir Andrew saw right through them and started to decipher the enchantments."

"Wow! He's so cool," I looked at Sir Andrew with sparkling eyes. I had newfound respect for him.

"Oh, it's nothing," he waved it off as he was embarrassed to suddenly receive a compliment out of the blue. "After deciphering the enchantment, we looked through all the rooms and got the victims out. We were about to leave as we thought we got all the victims, but the puppy appeared out of nowhere."

I looked at the puppy who innocently looked back. "Nowhere?"

"There was nothing there," Sir Andrew said as he continued the story. "We picked up the puppy and turned to go, but it started to struggle and bark. We found it weird and thought that maybe it wanted us to follow it. So, we let it down.

We followed the puppy and found out there was a hidden stairway in the house that spiraled into the basement. We entered and found you there. Without the puppy, you could have been left there. Worst case scenario, you would have died."

Died? Why do I feel like I have been in so many situations where I could have died, so far?

A chill ran down my spine as I asked the question that I had been meaning to ask for a long time now, "Did you catch the people who kept us in the house?"

"We did. You do not have to be afraid anymore," Sir Andrew looked at me with warmth in his eyes. I nodded at his words, accepting the warmth that was directed at me.

Although I felt as though I had encountered many dangerous and painful situations, it was now over. I'm safe now, I thought as a sigh that I had not known I was keeping in, escaped my lips. It was the longest sigh that I had released so far. It was a sigh of relief.

Now that I was relieved, a yawn escaped my lips as the feeling of tiredness overtook me. "I'm sleepy," I said as the two started to walk out of the room with me in between them.

"Okay, go to your room and sleep now. You have heard too many burdening things for a little child." Beth patted me on the back as she pointed in the direction of my room. I started to walk as the two looked at me going to my room from behind.

Suddenly, a soft push was felt on my legs as I looked back to see who it was. The puppy was looking at me with anticipation as it sat on the ground. I laughed a little as I spoke, "Okay, you can come with me to my room."

The puppy quickly got up and followed me to my room, all while wagging its tail from left to right. I quickly got into my bed as the puppy did the same. Pulling up the covers to a comfortable length, I tucked in the puppy that snuggled up to my small body.

I looked at the puppy as my eyes got droopy and sleep took over me.

You're not a beast. You're my savior.
