“I’m sorry.” Gabriel’s heart hammered in his chest. He didn’t want a police officer angry with him. “I forgot to charge the phone. I was baking, and I forgot.” He bit his lip but forced himself to stop.
“Make sure you keep it charged from now on.”
“I will, I promise.” Gabriel glanced at the door. Could he leave?
Ward motioned for him to sit on the only chair in the office. “It’s proving harder to find a suitable job than we thought.”
“Oh.” He wasn’t aware of how tense he’d been until his shoulders slumped.
“I know it’s not ideal, but I’m afraid you’ll have to stay here for a while longer.”
Gabriel pictured the cold cabin and shivered. He didn’t know if he could take it much longer. He hadn’t slept in what felt like weeks, and he was so exhausted he wasn’t sure he cared about the trial anymore.
“There’s been some development in the case.” Officer Ward’s gaze hardened. “It’s more important than ever to keep you hidden.”
