Chapter 3: What the Hell Are You Supposed to Be?

Sometimes a few hours inside a class can feel like eons; it's as if time itself slows down when you're doing something you hate.

"And that concludes our class. Are there any questions regarding our topic?" the teacher asked, but no one was foolish enough to prolong this already overdue class.

No offense, but I hate this subject. In fact, I hate all subjects!

Our teacher, who taught English, was pretty chill. Out of all the subjects that exist, English baffles me the most.

How come I fail the exam for the very language I'm speaking? It's so bizarre and ridiculous.

"Okay, if there's none, class dismissed," she said and walked out of the door.

"Finally!"

"Ah, freedom at last!"

"Hey, wanna grab some food tonight?"

Each student had their plans after the class, but me? I'm going back home. I walked out of the classroom without paying attention to my classmates' mindless mumbling and headed out of the school.

Sometimes, I prefer walking, even though the orphanage is about an hour's walk away from school. I'm by no means poor; you could even say that the orphanage I'm in is quite rich. If you were to look at our orphanage, you might think it belonged to some rich, powerful asshole. But, in fact, it's just an orphanage.

I once thought that Mr. Blue used to be some corrupt politician who controlled the city behind the scenes and used the image of being an orphanage owner as a disguise. The money keeps flowing to the orphanage, but something tells me that the reason why our orphanage is rich has something to do with me.

As I was walking down the street, I noticed one of my classmates following me from behind. Even without looking back, I could feel his presence behind me, his uneven footsteps, and ragged breathing.

'What the hell is this guy on about?'

I turned my head just enough to get a glance of who was following me.

This guy is one of the weirdos in our class, named Jenus. Quite a weird name if you ask me, but who am I to judge? I'm the kind of guy who fights monsters on a daily basis, so I don't think I have the right to judge what is weird or not.

Jenus is a new student at my school, having transferred this year. Despite being considered one of the class weirdos, he's still known as the friendliest guy in our class. The only problem with him is his constant rambling about Greek mythology, which I find intriguing, as I even find myself listening intently to his stories.

He's a chill dude from my perspective, but the question remains: why is this guy on my tail?

After a bit of walking, I took a turn into one of the alleys and waited for him to follow me. Lo and behold, he did.

I jumped on him from behind and kicked his cane away, leaving him standing unbalanced.

"What the hell do you want?" I asked him threateningly.

Seeing my face, Jenus heaved a sigh of relief, which was weird. Why would you feel relief if you just got jumped on?

"Marcus, have you been experiencing weird things these past few months?" Jenus suddenly asked me.

Of course, I have, not just these past few months, but my entire life. I thought inwardly, but I didn't blurt it out.

"What!? What do you mean by that?" I asked him, surprised.

"Summer is about to come, Marcus. The monsters going after you would increase by how many folds. You have to come with me to the camp!" Jenus said, sounding panicked.

Camp?

Yeah, I did feel that every summer, the monsters going after me increase, but not enough to be perceived as a huge threat.

"What the hell are you talking about, and what is this camp about?" After I gave him a threatening shout, Jenus stopped, and for a moment, a brief silence descended on both of us. Finally, after a few seconds, he spoke.

"Marcus, you are a demi-god! And the longer you are outside without any protection, the longer you are in danger!"

What? A demi-god? The monster I fought did call me a demi-god. Does that mean gods are real? Does that mean I have divine parentage? Oh my! This is mind-blowing!

"Okay, let's say I believe a little of what you're saying, but what is your proof? Give me solid proof before I believe any of your nonsense," I said with a no-nonsense tone. I'm still reluctant to believe this bullshit.

Jenus sighed at me and said, "You want proof?" Then he snapped his fingers.

Snap!

Suddenly, his pants started to melt off, but instead of hairless human feet, I saw a goat's half.

"You're a half-goat, half-man!?" I blurted out.

Jenus corrected, "A satyr, to be exact. The guide of all demi-gods towards the camp. It is our job to lead you to the camp," he said with pride, puffing out his chest.

"So what is this camp about?"

"There is a camp out there that exists to protect young demi-gods like you with divine parentage. Inside the camp, you will be taught how to protect yourself against outside threats and much more. You can also be given a quest by your godly parents," he explained.

"So you're telling me that there are more kids like me out there?"

"Yes, a lot, in fact. Gods have a very impulsive tendency to mate with mortal humans, resulting in many demi-gods."

"Wow! Just wow!" I could feel my mind going to explode from all that info dump.

Now, everything is starting to make sense. My life was interesting, but it's getting even more interesting. Inwardly, I started to grin.

"So when do we depart?"
