Path of The Unspecialized (TKA Fan-Fic)

Dorian is an ordinary teenager who loves to play Glory. He wants to become an Unspecialized character like his idol, Ye Xiu. But he didn’t expect that the journey would be harder than it seems. (This is a fan fiction of The King's Avatar. All credit goes to its author, Butterfly Blue. My thanks to him for making a wonderful story about video games. I’m still reading the novel and I will surely miss Ye Xiu and his adventures. This story is my entry in the TKA Fanfic Writing contest.)

Chapter 5: Rooftop

The starry sky night watches over Congee City. The wind breeze brushes my hair. Its coolness brings me peace, I close my eyes to savor the moment.

"Hi, Desert Storm." Lord Grim's voice is calm. "This is a nice spot you've got."

He just defeated me in the Arena minutes ago. And now, he has found me here in my secret hiding place. A rooftop of one of Congee City's towers.

I turn around to face him, the cold wind biting against my back. Lord Grim looks at me.

"Master, what brings you here?" I inquire. Surely, what's the sudden interest?

"I thought you might need a little pick me up. You seem to be the type who gets intimidated by failure."

I can only look down at how accurate his words are. He already knows me just by battling for a few minutes.

He sits down and beckons me to sit beside him. I walk towards him, the roof tiles sound at my footsteps. Sitting down, I see comets passing by the stars. And I take a deep breath.

"I'm kinda lost, Master Ye Xiu. I thought I wanted to be an Unspecialized. But it has brought me failure and other players look down on me."

"In order to be one, you need to master all of the other classes. A jack of all trades." Lord Grim said, his words solemn and serious, hitting their target in my heart.

I can only sigh in response. He then looks at me and continues, "I'm saying being Unspecialized requires a great demand of skill and understanding. After being in Glory for more than ten years, I managed to master each class like the back of my hand. Let me ask you this, how long have you been playing Glory?"

"Uhm... seven months?"

"See... That's not enough time to master all the twenty four classes. You've got potential. But do you know how to use Dragon Tooth, Heavy Hit, or Smoke Bomb? And combo them together? Though possible, it's hard becoming one on your first Glory character."

I just nod in response. Will I ever be enough? "Is that why Sacrosanct Lair won't accept me?"

"Sacrosanct Lair is a good guild. One of the most stringent in Glory. Joining them will bring out the best in you. But they're also practical people. You gotta prove to them being Unspecialized is worth it and maybe then, they'll accept you."

"But Master, I don't know where to start."

"Why not see which style of play resonates best with you? And only you know what that is."

I sigh in submission and said further, "And there's this problem with an appropriate weapon, as well. Looks like it's gonna take a long time." I frown in disapproval.

"For someone as talented as you, it won't take long. Don't be impatient. No matter how long it takes, you'll get there." He looks at me, happiness shining in his eyes. "And if someday, you decide to become a professional, Team Happy will be waiting for you."

And then he walks away, the piercing green aurora in the sky shining above him.
