Paragon of Death

Life from birth has been nothing but hell. I lost my parents to some stupid aristocrats whom they offended. Executed for no good reason. My relatives abandoned me and pushed me aside. They feared for their lives and left me and my sister to starve and wander the streets alone! No, this is worse than hell! I watched my sister die of starvation. Her lips were dry and her feet bloody. Her nails were broken and her fingers riddled with cuts. She struggled in my hands and after a few seconds of struggle she passed away. She seemed joyful in death so I prayed mine will come just as swift and merciful as hers. So I stayed in the alleyway, alone with her rotten corpse awaiting my fate for God knows how long. I could see it already. The darkness encroaching from all sides Everyone said death is scary but I say it's the end! Who needs life after death? What is the need for reincarnation? Who would want to return to this crazy world? "It's not yet time for you to go... You have one more task to accomplish as my host" A voice called out to me. I could barely see or speak but how can I miss such a beautiful face? It was an extremely handsome man who gazed at me with tender eyes. "Haven't I suffered enough? Can't I just rest?" I cried out. Why would I want to stay back in such a cruel world? "Don't you want to avenge the death of your parents? Don't you want to become something greater? I can make that happen!" The beautiful man said with an alluring voice. "You... Who are you?" I asked with an anxious heart. My parents always said God is the only one who cares about me! Maybe in my final hours, he has come to save me. "Call me Death..."

Chapter 9: Duke Hail

"How dare you!" Earl Linton was red with anger as he raised his hand and lightning surged around the man, but as he raised his hand to strike he felt a cold blade at his throat.

Swoosh!

His eyes shivered as he gazed at Daniel Ross welding a small dagger, with the cold blade touching the throat of his target. Mages may be supreme but when a sneak attack occurs or at close range like this when caught off guard by a fighter, there is nothing they can do about it.

"That's my son you are trying to hurt there, Earl Linton." Daniel said coldly as he pressed the blade closer to the throat of the man.

"Are you really going to go against the Linton family for the sake of a bastard son? Think well, Daniel!" Earl Linton said coldly as he gazed at Damon fiercely.

It seemed like he had made up his mind to kill this little brat, the only thing standing between him and his dreams is the cold dagger at his throat!

"If you think you can cast your spell faster than I can slit your throat be my guest, give it a try… Unless that, I suggest you take a step back and reconsider… I am a father like you, Earl and no matter what, family comes first" Daniel Ross looked unshaken.

The man who once acted timidly when speaking to the noble seemed like a completely different beast now his blade was drawn.

Damon sat and threw another piece of steak in his mouth as if nothing happening concerned him. He gazed at the boy of the Linton family and snorted disdainfully.

Like, what's the worst they can do?

Kill him?

In his opinion, he has already died twice over, so a third time won't change a thing.

Clap!

Clap!

Clap!

"Bravo! I was bored, but you guys made my night." A figure appeared from a dark corner of the pub and walked towards them.

Seeing the man, every noble in the room bowed respectfully, including Daniel and Linton with embarrassed looks on their faces.

"We never expected to meet Duke Hail here… forgive us for disturbing your peace." The two apologized hastily.

Meanwhile, Damon gazed at the man with interest while he ate. The man called Duke Hail looked like a youth, probably in his early thirties or late twenties. He wore a thick black leather jacket, a white shirt underneath, and thick leather black trousers with boots.

It was a strange way to dress at this age, so it was fascinating for Damon.

"Nice clothes" Damon commented calmly, but everyone in the room stopped breathing when they heard this.

Even Daniel Ross felt like digging a hole and burying himself alive. He can talk to an earl like this, but not a Duke.

A Duke is almost on par with the Prince of the royal family!

If Damon had the intention of getting him killed, he should have said that from the beginning, he doesn't need to put him through all of this!

"You like them? I can get you on the next time we meet" Duke Hail laughed calmly, stunning everyone.

The young Duke who was known to be powerful and ruthless in battle seemed nice to a bastard child of a Baron?

How is that possible?

"No need for your apologies, I already told you how this works… I was bored, I got entertained and that's it… there is no need for explanations and all that…" Duke Ross said when he noticed the two were still prostrating.

"By the way, I like the kid, he has guts. Also, I agree with Daniel Ross, when it comes to family everything else comes second, don't you think so too, Earl Linton?" Duke Hail asked with a kind smile, but his tone changed a bit.

The smile on his face slowly faded, and his hand gently landed on the Earl's body, but even that was able to make the Earl lose all the strength in his body and fall on his knees to beg!

"I totally agree with him and I bear no ill will against the Ross family, believe me!" Earl Linton trembled like a scared dog, leaving Damon stunned.

How can someone so jovial and friendly be so terrifying at the same time?

This was different from the fear one felt when dealing with a higher noble, it was like that of a man completely terrified of another man.

"Strange, I don't think he is a mage" Damon said with a confused look.

Even though Daniel Ross is at the peak of the human level as a fighter, he was still far inferior to most mages. He assumed there is a limit all fighters can reach, but seeing this today changed his mind about everything.

"How strong is a fighter at the Duke level?" Damon muttered in thought.

Just as expected, a lot fascinated him about this man, making him want to get closer to him.

This feeling was quite unusual…

<<Don't get too close to that man or your life will a lot more complicated than it already is>> Death finally spoke after a long time of silence.

Its voice sounded cold and detached, so Damon found it hard to deduce what the man is trying to say.

"Doesn't the death magic already make my life complicated?" Damon muttered with a raised eyebrow.

<<If you get too close to that man, will end up venturing into another part of this life never knew existed. This is a totally different experience… hassle should be avoided if possible>> Death said coldly.

Hearing this, Damon was stunned. He didn't know whether to trust someone who calls himself death.

"I will decide that for myself." Damon shrugged his shoulders in response.

He waited for a response from death and got none. This made Damon sigh as he hoped for me. He secretly hoped to have more time with this being so that he can learn more about the death magic. This is the only part of his training left neglected.
