Paragon of Death

Life from birth has been nothing but hell. I lost my parents to some stupid aristocrats whom they offended. Executed for no good reason. My relatives abandoned me and pushed me aside. They feared for their lives and left me and my sister to starve and wander the streets alone! No, this is worse than hell! I watched my sister die of starvation. Her lips were dry and her feet bloody. Her nails were broken and her fingers riddled with cuts. She struggled in my hands and after a few seconds of struggle she passed away. She seemed joyful in death so I prayed mine will come just as swift and merciful as hers. So I stayed in the alleyway, alone with her rotten corpse awaiting my fate for God knows how long. I could see it already. The darkness encroaching from all sides Everyone said death is scary but I say it's the end! Who needs life after death? What is the need for reincarnation? Who would want to return to this crazy world? "It's not yet time for you to go... You have one more task to accomplish as my host" A voice called out to me. I could barely see or speak but how can I miss such a beautiful face? It was an extremely handsome man who gazed at me with tender eyes. "Haven't I suffered enough? Can't I just rest?" I cried out. Why would I want to stay back in such a cruel world? "Don't you want to avenge the death of your parents? Don't you want to become something greater? I can make that happen!" The beautiful man said with an alluring voice. "You... Who are you?" I asked with an anxious heart. My parents always said God is the only one who cares about me! Maybe in my final hours, he has come to save me. "Call me Death..."

Chapter 4: Meeting Death

After listening to what Daniel Ross had to say, Damon nodded. He understood the situation clearly, but then he didn't feel flustered because he had nothing to lose. He would just gain more if he has an affinity to magic, and gain less if he doesn't.

His eyes seemed cold and emotionless, which made Daniel Ross respect him even more. At a time like this, children his age would feel anxious and begin panicking, but none of that happened. Damon didn't even look moved by the conversation.

"Where so how do I find if I have enough talent to be a mage?" Damon asked casually.

It's just as Daniel Ross said, the value of a mage is priceless. So far this little town is yet to produce a mage in decades and seeing someone like him now gives them hope.

Either way, Damon had no intentions of doing this for the people around him. It was just for himself.

Pa!

Daniel Ross clapped and from the shadow, in a corner of the room, a person in black robes and cloak emerged. His presence was hidden so perfectly, that Damon almost didn't notice his presence.

The person in the cloak drifted forward like the wind and moved so smoothly, that Damon would have sworn he or she was not walking.

"Here…" a spooky voice echoed across the room as the person handed over what seemed like a crystal orb to Daniel before drifting back to the closest shadow and vanishing almost instantly.

"You already have a mage, so why do you need me?" Damon asked casually.

He didn't seem moved by the performance.

'This kid is hard to please' Daniel Ross muttered in his mind as he approached with the crystal orb.

"That one is paid to protect my family… but you, you will become my family" Daniel Ross said as he crouched and pushed the crystal orb over to Damon.

"Take the orb and shut your eyes… Look for the strongest emotion you can hold onto, be it love or hatred. Hold on to the scene and keep reliving that moment." The spooky voice echoed across the room.

Damon held on to the crystal and even without making an effort he was pulled in by an unknown force into a trance!

<<We finally meet!>> The voice sounded elated as Damon got pulled through a stream of memories!

His memories, but this time it wasn't just he and his sister.

When the body of his parents was buried, only he and his sister stood there under the rain while sobbing, but this time he saw a man covered in black robes with two pairs of black angelic wings gently flapping behind him.

In all those memories he experienced, he always saw that strange man and his eyes were always pinned on him, not even bothering to spare his sister a glance!

Wam!

Damon found himself in a completely white room and at the other end of the room was a man slightly pale in completion with a mixture of black and purple hair and a sweet smile on his face.

For someone wearing dark and terrifying clothes, he could be considered the most handsome person Damon has come across.

"It's you… you are the one I saw in my dreams…" Damon said with a shocked expression on his face as he slowly approached the man.

"It wasn't a dream… You were dead and I was there… I have always been there" The man said calmly.

"Who are you?" Damon asked.

"I already answered that question the first time… Just call me, The guardian spirit of death… angel of death or whatever" Death said with a sweet smile.

"I think I will go with Mr. Death for now" Damon said thoughtfully.

The man's eyes twitched a bit, but he didn't rebuke Damon.

Since he didn't give Damon a specific name to use, the kid had all right to use anything he felt more comfortable with.

"So why am I here?" Damon asked while observing his surrounding. "Why have you been looking after me all this while, but you never tried to save my sister or my parents?"

"We guardian spirits are not allowed to interfere with activities of mortals… we live by a rule which I do not plan to break" Death responded dryly.

"We? There are more of you?" Damon was a bit confused.

"Yes, there are other guardian spirits… each representing a particular element… I represent the death element." Death said calmly.

"Can I ask a question?" Damon asked with a raised hand, but Death simply shook his head in response.

"We don't have much time now, so you will only pay attention and do as I say…." Death shrugged.

"Why would I listen to you?" Damon asked while rubbing his head and looking at Death as if he had just seen an idiot.

"Because I gave you a second chance at life" Death said with a stern look, his eyes revealing a bit of annoyance.

"I didn't ask for that… I clearly wanted to die, but you butted in and brought me back to life, only to have me chased and almost killed. I didn't ask for it and you did it… I am not obliged to be grateful for something I didn't request for… So you are making no sense here." Damon shook his head.

Hearing this, the handsome face of death twitched. At this point, he didn't know whether to smile or frown because even though Damon's words were infuriating, he was right.

He didn't beg to be revived, he actually wanted to die and leave this cruel world. So he had no reason to be grateful to someone who brought him back without his consent.

'Why the hell am I being logical with this kid? I thought it would be much easier, but it's not… He is not dumb… he is smart and calculative with a small pinch of shamelessness… He is perfect for the job' Death felt satisfied with his candidate.

He didn't seem pissed, instead he looked even more excited. Finally, after so long, he has found a promising host!
