Paragon of Death

Life from birth has been nothing but hell. I lost my parents to some stupid aristocrats whom they offended. Executed for no good reason. My relatives abandoned me and pushed me aside. They feared for their lives and left me and my sister to starve and wander the streets alone! No, this is worse than hell! I watched my sister die of starvation. Her lips were dry and her feet bloody. Her nails were broken and her fingers riddled with cuts. She struggled in my hands and after a few seconds of struggle she passed away. She seemed joyful in death so I prayed mine will come just as swift and merciful as hers. So I stayed in the alleyway, alone with her rotten corpse awaiting my fate for God knows how long. I could see it already. The darkness encroaching from all sides Everyone said death is scary but I say it's the end! Who needs life after death? What is the need for reincarnation? Who would want to return to this crazy world? "It's not yet time for you to go... You have one more task to accomplish as my host" A voice called out to me. I could barely see or speak but how can I miss such a beautiful face? It was an extremely handsome man who gazed at me with tender eyes. "Haven't I suffered enough? Can't I just rest?" I cried out. Why would I want to stay back in such a cruel world? "Don't you want to avenge the death of your parents? Don't you want to become something greater? I can make that happen!" The beautiful man said with an alluring voice. "You... Who are you?" I asked with an anxious heart. My parents always said God is the only one who cares about me! Maybe in my final hours, he has come to save me. "Call me Death..."

Chapter 38: Wealthy Tycoon

"Your doubts have nothing to do with reality" Damon said coldly as more bone breaking sounds could be heard and he fell to his knees. His hands twisted and turned viciously and his mouth was unable to close properly because of the fangs.

His chest caved in and more bone snapping sounds could be heard but then it all stopped.

Crack!

Crack!

"Impossible!" Duke Hail said with shock as he moved closer to Damon with the Moonstone but that changed nothing.

Damon shot him a fierce gaze as his body began returning to normal and a cool aura spread across his chest. He slowly got back to his feet and wiped off the sweat on his forehead.

Everyone gazed at him in shock as he stretched forward and held the Moonstone in his hands and smiled at it.

"This looks expensive, you shouldn't carry it around recklessly" Damon asked as he put it back and closed the box.

Duke Hail stood like a statue, as if he has seen a ghost and said nothing. It felt more like he couldn't say anything. Archmage Kratos and Pope Light remained seated in silence as if they have all seen a ghost. This is the first time they have heard of someone Suppressing the curse with strong willpower and that's why they clearly understood how Duke Hail felt.

"As agreed, I have proven to be able to suppress the curse so I have no reason to leave with the Duke… Can I leave now?" Damon asked

"Wait…" Duke Hail spoke before anyone could reply to Damon.

He pulled out what seemed like a book and passed it over to Damon with a slight frown.

"Wherever you go, you will remain a target after getting the curse. This is a simplified manual for werewolves like ourselves. It will help boost your chances of survival" Duke Hail said coldly which left Damon disturbed. This is the first time he is seeing a noble genuinely trying to be kind.

"Why give it to me when you know I won't be a part of your group?" Damon was still a bit skeptical. He had trust issues so it is natural for him to act this way.

"Don't be stupid. You may not be a part of my pack but we are all the same regardless. For each Blood clan member you kill, it is a victory for us. By the way, so many people died in this system during my father's time. I don't want to do the same. The least I can do is give you a way to defend yourself and wish you luck" Duke Hail said with a stern look.

Damon was left speechless. With the power of the death magic, he can sense all negative emotions, so it's practically impossible to fool him. He can easily tell when a person is lying but right now he could tell Duke Hail meant every single word he said.

"I also believe having you here is a good thing. We do need someone to checkmate the supernatural beings hiding within the academy. They should all be around the same age as you, young and inexperienced. With the level of talent, you have shown, dealing with them shouldn't be much of a problem." Pope Light said with a slight smile on his face.

After watching Damon resist the curse, the old man's attitude towards him changed. There was a little bit of respect hidden within his tone now.

"I guess that makes sense a bit. It wouldn't hurt to have a werewolf on our side but since that will be fairly dangerous work so I believe you should be compensated. For every supernatural being you defeat, cultivation materials will be awarded" Archmage Kratos said.

He quickly reached under his desk and pulled out what looked like a strange ring and passed it over to Damon.

"Consider this as a means of communicating with me. Pour in your mana into this when you are done with a task and I will be there… I am a busy man so don't always expect me to come on time" Archmage Kratos said quickly.

Damon left the room, dazed but he simply didn't say anything else. It felt like he entered an agreement with the three powerful men in the room without saying a single word. This felt strange and nice as well.

As for the reward, he was a bit excited. For every mission completed as a student, you are graded and according to your grades, you are given resources in exchange. That way the students with less skill and potential won't be able to get as much potential as the powerful ones. It can be considered an effective means of weeding out the weak.

Now he has three sources of cultivation resources. The Chosen's are allocated a certain amount of cultivation resources on a weekly basis, academy missions, and finally his midnight supernatural hunting duty.

Dangerous but quite generous.

When he returned to the dormitory, he sat on the bed and opened the book immediately. Silently reading through it, he was stunned by what he learned. Just like fighters, this can be considered a permanent pathway but unlike the normal fighting styles out there it relied purely on instincts.

To learn it, one had to stop being logical and let his instincts take over. It's like placing a target on a person and closing your eyes while letting your body do the job. Fighting like a wild beast.

"As expected of a combat technique used by werewolves. To achieve ultimate power with it, you need to become the beast!" Damon said with a frown before falling back on his bed with a sigh.

In his mind, he could already tell this is not something he can practice extensively. For someone who is as calculative as him, it will be difficult to achieve a state of nothingness as described there. It's like jumping into a pit without looking, trusting yourself to do the job.

"Trusting yourself…" Damon said with a hint of shock as he sat up and gazed at the book again.
