  I took a step backwards into denial.

  “What? Vincent...it’s me...your wife,” I said, barely refraining from crying in front of him.

  “My wife...” he repeated, then grabbed his temples with his palms bouncing his head.

  The doctor had already entered the ward.

  “Mrs. Baker, you’d better get out of here. I’m going to subject Mr. Baker to a few tests.” 

  “Okay...” I said, taking even more steps back until Mara and I had reached the hallway.

  “Mara, what’s going on with him? Why doesn’t he remember me?” I asked, scared. 

  “I don’t know what’s going on, Tiara, but from what I can see, it looks like the car accident affected his memory.” 

  “It terrifies me he doesn’t remember me, Mara...” I said, already feeling warm tears flood my eyes. 

  “Hey, calm down. Maybe it’s temporary. Let’s just wait and see what the doctor says. In the meantime, let’s go down to the cafeteria and get something to eat, honey.”
