He did this because Enel hadn't told anyone about his desire to destroy Skypiea yet, so he had to do this little trick.

Returning to Ohm, the man looked at the crowd and seemed hesitant. It was a convincing performance. He didn't speak until Ren struck him a few times and said, "That was true... We planned to do it and leave Skypiea with the ship Enel-sama was building."

As for Raki, she looked at Ren in a completely different light now. She initially doubted his words, but the priests confessed even to the details of Enel's plan.

These details were just some information Ren added to the priests' minds to tell the people, like how Enel would destroy Skypiea with the same attack that destroyed his original homeland.
