Chapter 12

After waiting in line for a bit, James's turn came.

"Did the mission fail?"

The receptionist was the same one from before, so when he saw James's depressed look, he thought he failed the mission.

"No, I succeeded, where do I need to leave the bodies?"

The receptionist was surprised slightly, but it isn't anything unheard of for new mercenaries to finish hard D rank missions.

"Do you have people carrying the corpses?"

The receptionist asked since he didn't see James carrying anything.

"No, I have them stored with me."

The receptionist looked at James for a second.

"This way."

The receptionist got up and signaled for James to follow him to a back room, meanwhile a different employee took the receptionist's sit and called for the next person in line.

After walking through the door, James saw a massive room with many employees working on dismantling monster corpses.

"You can leave them here."

From what James said, the receptionist assumed that James had a storage item, they are a bit rare, but it is not too rare to see cultivators using them.

Lifting his hand, James made it big enough for a wobit corpse to come out of it and started to remove them from his body one by one, until there was a pile of 13 wobit corpses on the ground.

'What in the world?' The receptionist was extremely surprised seeing this scene, he wasn't the only one, all of the workers were surprised, but after a few seconds of surprise everyone just shrugged and went back to their work.

One of the rules of working in the mercenary guild is 'We do not ask more than we need to know.' Although surprised and curious, it was none of their business so they just left it.

After that little surprise the receptionist told some of the workers to check the corpses.

"We checked them all and they are high quality, however, they have pierce wounds which lowers it to good quality."

Hearing that, the receptionist started doing the math.

"The mission is 2600 gold, 13 good quality wobit corpses are 90 each, so it totals to 3770 gold coins."

James was a bit surprised at how much money he made with one hunt.

"Do you want the money now or should I add it to your card?"

"I will take the money."

Although storing it in the bank is good and all, but James didn't find a reason to use it since he can store it in his body much easier and that way he can always have the money on hand.

After that, the receptionist told James to follow him back and give him his card, after that he put the card in a card compartment, and he typed on his keyboard before handing the card and a bag with money to him.

"I just confirmed the mission completion, you need 9 more D rank mission to go up a rank, as for the bag, the money is in there, you can count it."

Trusting that he wouldn't get scammed by the mercenary guild for such a small amount, he just put them both in his pocket which stored it in his body and said his goodbyes before going back to his inn.

After getting into his room, James closed his door, he removed his shoes and dropped on his bed.

He didn't do anything but just laid there staring at the ceiling for a while.

[Host]

James didn't hear the system, he was too absorbed in his thoughts.

[Host]

Again, James didn't hear it.

[*Playing loud beep*]

"Haaaa!!"

James jumped up from his bed, both from being jumpscared and from the loud sound.

"What happened?!"

[Host, are you okay?]

The system sounded concerned, it was the first time the system saw him like that, he was depressed this past week, he was missing his family and friends, but now the levels just got much higher, it seems that both missing his home and what happened today were piling up and the system was worried that if it wasn't resolved something bad might happen.

'I'm fine.'

James answered, but he knew he wasn't fine and so did the system.

[Host, while you were in the mercenary guild, I heard many people talking about teams and companions, maybe you should try getting into a team or getting a companion or a friend, it has already been a week and other than training you haven't been much outside.]

The system wanted James to join a team or find a friend or anything, at the moment it can feel that James didn't feel like he belonged to this world too much and that just worseness his depression, maybe with a friend or even a partner James will feel like he belongs and it will make the depression leave, at least that is what the system thinks, it isn't human so it doesn't feel like it completely understands humans, but it feels like that might help James.

'Its fine system, I will be fine, I just need to sleep, and my mind should be clearer tomorrow.'

[Hos-]

"I'm fine!!"

After that James flipped to look at the wall near his bed.

"I'm sorry, I'm just tired."

And so, James closed his eyes and tried to go to sleep.

Meanwhile, the system felt a bit sad, but also very worried.

And so, the night passed with James barely being able to sleep, every time he fell asleep he had nightmares about what he did and it woke him up.

While the system tried to think of ways to help James.

When morning came, James was awake, but he didn't leave his bed, he just stayed there.

[Host, there is a new trial unlocked]

'Huh?'

James was surprised, he didn't remember doing anything worth unlocking a trial.

The is because he didn't, the trial isn't from something James did but from the system.

After thinking for hours, it couldn't think of a way to help, so it asked its creator for help, at first he refused, but after the system begged him for help, the creator gave up and used one of his small achievements to pay to unlock a trial for James, a trial which hopefully will help James.

'Maybe later.'

As surprised as he was, he just didn't feel like doing anything.

Still, the system didn't give him a choice.

[Save Apple village.

Apple village is about to be raided by pirates, save them and defeat the pirates.

Reward: Hero of apple village.]

Looking at the system window, James was surprised.

He expected it to be a fight against a character or something, but not saving a village.

[Host, if you do not go to fight now, I'm afraid the village might be destroyed]

That was a lie, the system just wanted James to do this trial and it worried that if it wasn't urgent, he might not do it.

Hearing that if he didn't do it now, the village might be destroyed, James got up, put his shoes and told the system.

'System, start the trial!'

James wasn't a hero, he didn't want to be one because he knew that he can't save everyone, but he still couldn't let a village be destroyed when he can try and stop it.

Seeing its plan work, the system felt happy but also a bit bad for lying, but it felt that helping James was the top priority at the moment, lying or not.

[Trial accepted]

[Transporting host to following world: One piece 13542]

And the world turned black to James.

Again… Depressing, but as the saying goes, don't shoot the messenger, I'm just the narrator.

Ahem, anyway, I will see you in the next, hopefully less depressing one.

Cya.

(Again, depressing, but I'm trying to make it as real as possible, a lot of stories show the happy sides of being a reincarnator and stuff, but they are still human with human feelings, they might not feel like they belong, they might miss their home, killing isn't just something you do and go on with your life, anyway, depressing stuff will end soon so no worry, and hope you enjoyed the chapter, cya.)
