I watched him as he licked the ice cream, happily bringing out the face of a happy child. He giggles as he licks the ice cream. I could not stop smiling at his childishness.
He was a cute little boy,he is not fair like most of us. I would say he is a mixed race because he looks like one, African and white, I wondered which of the parents is black or white. I will know from him after he is done with his ice cream.
My phone rang and I checked it to see Ben calling me. I smiled, this is the third time he is calling me today.
I picked the call and checked to see if the boy on my lap was comfortable enough.
"Hello"
His voice came through with so much eagerness.
"Hi Benjamin"
I replied.
"Are you okay?"
He asked which got me wondering why he asked.
"I am fine, I don't think I have an issue at the moment"
I replied, the little boy smiled at me and I smiled back, I caressed his cheeks then returned my attention to my phone.
"Well, you did not sound exciting when you picked up so I just want to know if you are okay or it's just your mood"
He said a bit worried and I felt for him.
"Nothing Ben,I am fine. You don't have to be worried"
I replied and he sighed.
"It's okay if you insist. Can't wait to see you later. Take care and bye,I love you"
He said and hung up the call,I removed the phone from my ear and stared at the screen.
"I love you too Benjamin"
I said and pocketed the phone then looked down to see the boy staring at me with no ice cream in his hand,it dawned on me that he had eaten it up.
He smiled at me then fumbled with his hands, the act was so adorable.
"How are you boy?"
I asked him
"I am fine now, hi my name is Jeffery"
He said and extended his little hands towards me. I took it and stared at him. I can't place it but there is something about him.
"So Jeffery, why were you crying out there alone and where are your parents?"
I asked and his countenance changed, I don't know if what I asked was wrong.
"I don't know how I got there but I remembered going out with my parents and sister but I found myself there with none of them by my side and I don't even know how to locate them. I am so lost"
He broke down and started crying all over. I have not handled kids for long now. I don't know any tricks again. I didn't even know how to make him stop crying.
"It's alright Jeff but your people will be around somewhere. Let's go look for them because I need to get you to them"
I said, trying to get up with him but he increased his voice and cried more. I was bewildered, I did all I could to calm him down,no way. I was getting tired and frustrated.
"See Jeff you don't have to cry,you can tell me how to find your parents and we Will do it right away. Your parents will be searching for you by now."
I said trying to make him stop crying,he stopped and wiped his tears away.
"I am not from here,I don't even know here. I think I am lost, auntie"
He said sobering and I felt for him. Taking him to the police was the right thing to do but in this kind of world we are into. It's not safe and I have no clue on how to go about this. I thought of Ben and decided to call him. I know I just heard from him but letting him know the situation at hand was important.
I wiped his tears and hugged him to myself
"It's going to be fine. I will figure out how to locate your parents."
I brought my phone for the second time in a while for a call with Ben, only that this time around,I am the one doing the calling.
I put a call to Ben and in a ring,he picked it up.
"Hello beautiful, I am blessed to be called by the one my heart yearns for. The only beautiful woman in the world. The one I can die for and as well live for. What do I owe this honourable call?"
I chuckled at his singing voice, Ben is a drama king. Imagine the kind of praise he is showering on me this afternoon. I allowed him to finish and when he was done with the praises, I let the cat out of the bag.
"Ben,I have got an issue. I saw a crying boy with his parents nowhere to be found and I am stranded with him, I don't even know what to do with him so I was thinking if you have a clue because taking him to the law enforcement agency is not proper minding the kind of world we are into"
