Him

Everyone in the hall started digging their plates. She saw some people walking up to the couples congratulating them on their 40th anniversary. They presented expensive gifts to the couples.

"Congratulations on your 40th wedding anniversary." A lady said kissing both of them on their cheeks and presenting her gifts to them. Though she didn't say that out loud, Jane could read her lips very well. She has the given ability to read lips perfectly as long as she stared at that person.

"Why aren't you eating?" Lisa asked. "You don't like the food?"

"Uhmmm. No. The food is really good." She said staring at her.

"Okay. But why aren't you eating if it's good." She asked raising a brow.

"Li....Lisa. About what you said earlier."

"About the man?"

"Hmm yes."

Lisa gave her a bemused look. "Okay. What about him?" She asked in creased brows.

"Is he... Uhm.. I mean, is he really the one you set up a date with me? Is he really the one you were talking about the other day?" Her voice stuttering a little.

Lisa could see the anxious expression on her face and she shook her head. "Tsk, tsk tsk. Will I say lies to you?" She asked smirking at  her. "He really is the one. So yes, yes, yes, he's the one I was talking about the other day."

"Well...I...I know you wouldn't lie to me. I'm just curious." She said and stared back at where the man was sitting down and back at her friend. "How long have you known him?"

Lisa was about to put some food in her mouth but paused, and dropped it back when Jane asked that question. She let out a sigh and spoke. "I just met him that day. It was actually the first time I saw him." She paused and stared at the man and back to her friend. "I was also having that kind of expression on your face, when I first laid eyes on him, you know. I also noticed something about him."

"What...what is it?" She stuttered again.

"He doesn't speak that much, and I saw that he's quite picky with the girls he hangs out with." She breathed out loudly and shook her head. "You know what amused me the most?" She asked taking a sip from her champagne glass.

"What?" Her heart was thudding loud inside her chest for no so reason.

"That jerk, actually rejected me."

It was as if the world stopped spinning for Jane. Wait, what? Did she hear that correctly or what. She stared at Lisa with complete shock written all over her face.

"Re.. rejected? By whom? Him?" She asked anxiously.

She couldn't stop herself from asking. No guy at all has ever rejected her friend, rather she's the one who rejects them. It was too good to be true in her ears. So how come did that man actually rejected her. Why?

"Hmm." Lisa nodded and put in some food in her mouth and faced her friend. "I was shocked when he picked interest in you. When I told him about you, all he said was 'ok'. And so I asked him if he'd love to go on a date with you, and he said 'ok'. I told him where the both of you would meet for your first date and his response was still an 'ok'.

"Ok? Ok was all he said?" She asked as her anxious look suddenly turned into a frown.

Noticing the look on her friend's face she spoke again. "Arrrgh, calm down okay. He said it in a calm facial expression. I made sure I studied his expression to see if he was kidding or not, but he seemed serious about it."

"And what if he said that just to get rid of you?" She asked now annoyed.

"Tsh.. Haha. Get rid of me? Why?" She asked smiling wryly.

"I don't know." She took a sip from from her glass and looked at Lisa again. "Maybe because you were talking too much?"

Lisa's hand paused in mid air with the fork in her hand. She gently put the fork down and faced her. "Talking too much?" She asked in a teasing tone. "Hahaha. He should count his stars that a beautiful girl like me went up to him and started a conversation with him. I don't think he's aware of how many guys are begging for my attention. So why would he want to get rid of me.Tsh. How funny that sounds." She said and continued eating.

"But think this through Lisa. If you were rejected by him, then...then who am I...?" She asked nervously.

Lisa was about taking I sip from her glass. She paused and kept the glass on the table. Lisa thought it through. She knew Jane had a point there. What if he really rejected her? What if he said those 'oks' to get rid of her? What if he really disliked her?

"You're...I think you have a point there Jane." She said those words with eyes wide open. But they soon returned back to normal and she shrugged. "So that jerk actually said those words to get rid of me uhn?" She took a sip and put a piece of steak in her mouth. "But who cares anyway. He's not the only fish in the sea, is he? And besides, I'm way too pretty to chase after a guy. If he rejected me, that's his bad luck, not mine." She said with so much pride.

Immediately, it was as if someone just took off the spell from Jane's eyes. She suddenly disliked the man and killing any odd feeling she had on her head, and focused on her meal.

'What was I thinking?' She asked berating herself. That man will simply reject her. If he could not pick an interest in this goddess of earth sitting down next to her, then who is she? He'd probably do worse. Worst than she can ever imagine.
