Chapter 14

Aldo chose that moment to run up to me, a stick in his mouth. I took it from him and threw it hard. He went chasing after it.

“It was a year ago. I’ve done all the grieving and anger and shit. I know now I’d just made a bad choice with her. But she was pretty and liked my brain and we had so much fun together. Most of the time. I was blinded, I guess. But I’m definitely not ready to jump back into the dating pool. Not until I find someone I know I can really trust. You understand?”

Tru smiled sweetly and softly, and the affection in his eyes made my insides warm. He reached across the table to squeeze my hand. Without thinking, I flipped over my hand and gripped his fingers. His smile grew wider.

“Yeah, I know. Smart, I think.”

“Thanks.”

“Thank you for telling me.” He took a breath and pulled away slowly, his fingers dragging over my palm.
