Chapter 27
“I’ve asked that a buggy be brought around for you.”
As Dr. Turner finished speaking, the buggy arrived outside the door of the surgery. Neil had no choice but to comply with his superior’s request. His confrontation with Rolf would have to wait.
The buggy was driven by a young woman who introduced herself as Nancy. Nancy prattled on about how she was being trained to drive the big horse teams.
“I’m just doing errands like this for now while I learn the ropes. Pretty soon, once I learn the island better, I’ll get to drive a taxi. Then, if I’m good enough, I’ll get a tour wagon. It’d be so cool if I get a three-horse hitch. But I bet they’ll probably start me off with a two-horse.”
Neil only half listened, making appropriate nods and vocal affirmations as they drove along. In his head he went over what he would’ve said if he’d gotten the chance to talk to Rolf.
