Chapter 33
“How’s your father doing?”
To Zeke’s surprise, Mrs. Wong answered. “The doctor informed us earlier that he might not wake up anymore. It’s a matter of hours now.”
Zeke’s heart hurt. Or maybe it was James who was sad. Zeke had no idea anymore. “Will it be okay if I go into the room and talk to him?”
“Of course,” Mrs. Wong replied. “It’s one of his final requests.”
“Thank you.”
Mrs. Wong shook her head. “Oliver and I should be thanking you. You’ve brought him so much happiness in his final days. He even mentioned to me he felt so much lighter after talking to you. I don’t know what your conversations were about, but I appreciate you taking time out for him. For several years in our marriage, I couldn’t get him to open up, but you did. He appeared so much more at peace over the past few weeks. For that, you have my utmost gratitude.”
Zeke clenched his fists as he did his best not to sob in front of Oliver and Mrs. Wong. “You’re welcome.”
