Hurricane Katrina was a large and destructive Atlantic Category 5 hurricane that caused more than 1,800 deaths and $125 billion worth of damage in late August 2005, primarily in the city of New Orleans and surrounding areas. It was at the time the most expensive tropical on record and is now applying with 2017's Hurricane Harvey. It was the twelfth tropical cyclone, fifth hurricane, and third major hurricane of the 2005 Atlantic hurricane season, and the fourth most intense Atlantic hurricane ever recorded to make landfall in the adjacent United States.
