"What? You're Uchiha Madara? No, that's impossible. Uchiha Madara was a contemporary of the First Hokage. You can't be him!"
Uchiha Shisui's face showed extreme shock.
Uchiha Madara, the ancestor of the Uchiha clan, lived during the era of the First Hokage and was the only one capable of standing toe-to-toe with him. But Madara had died decades ago, so how could the person in front of him be the same Madara? Yet if he wasn't Uchiha Madara, how could he possess the Mangekyō Sharingan?
According to clan records, no one since Madara had awakened the Mangekyō Sharingan.
"You've heard of Kakuzu, right?"
Uchiha Obito, satisfied with Shisui's shock and seeing a hint of belief, pressed further.
"He's mastered some forbidden techniques and possesses Kage-level strength. His true age is unknown, but I've heard he's quite old," Shisui recalled from the information he'd read.
"Of course he's old. He's from the same generation as me and Hashirama."
"I remember he once tried to assassinate Hashirama, but being the compassionate man he was, Hashirama spared him. Otherwise, Kakuzu wouldn't be alive today."
Obito reminisced. After spending considerable time with Madara, he had learned much of the past.
"A contemporary of the First Hokage?"
Shisui was surprised.
Though skeptical of the man claiming to be Madara, the connection to Kakuzu—a known contemporary of Hashirama—lent some credibility. He began estimating the man's true age.
"Even a mere insect can survive this long, so why wouldn't I? If Hashirama hadn't been gravely injured in our final battle, he might have lived even longer," Uchiha Obito said with a domineering air.
"Why have you come here?"
Still doubting Obito's claim to being Madara, Shisui pressed for answers.
"Among the current Uchiha, you're the only one who interests me."
Obito smirked.
"How about it? Are you interested in joining the organization I've created?"
"Join your organization? Never!"
Shisui rejected the offer without hesitation.
Even if the man before him was an Uchiha elder, he was an enemy of Konoha, and Shisui would never align with such a person.
"Don't be so quick to refuse. Joining my organization will benefit you, not harm you," Obito insisted.
"You're Konoha's enemy. Even if you truly are an elder of my clan, there's no way I'll join the organization of someone like you," Shisui replied firmly.
"Your eyesight must be deteriorating, right? If you continue using those eyes, you'll eventually go blind, and not even the best medical ninjutsu can save you," Obito said, offering a tempting solution.
"Join me, and I can help you prevent blindness."
Shisui hesitated. Obito knew that anyone who had unlocked the Mangekyō Sharingan would never willingly lose such power.
Konoha didn't have the means to treat the side effects of the Mangekyō Sharingan, but Obito did. If Shisui wanted to save his vision, joining Obito was his only option.
"Do you really have a way to stop the loss of vision?"
Shisui was caught off guard. He had indeed noticed his eyesight deteriorating slightly with each use of the Mangekyō Sharingan. If this continued, he might end up blind, just as Obito had suggested.
"Of course. Otherwise, I would've been blind long ago."
Obito continued to entice him.
"Join me, and you'll be able to use your eyes without fear of losing them!"
Though the idea of preventing blindness was appealing, Shisui's resolve didn't waver.
"While I do want to save my vision, there's no way I'll join your organization," Shisui replied decisively.
If he betrayed Konoha for his own sake, how would he be any different from the selfish members of his clan who put family interests above everything else? Shisui was a man of integrity, dedicated to Konoha's peace, and his convictions wouldn't allow him to betray that.
"Is that so? What a pity," Obito's voice grew cold.
Realizing Shisui's steadfastness, Obito knew there was no chance of recruiting him.
"If you won't join me, then we're enemies!"
"Wood Release: Grafting Technique!"
Green light gathered in Obito's hand, and a branch extended from his palm, its tip sharp like a blade. He approached Shisui with murderous intent.
"Kotoamatsukami!"
Recognizing the danger, Shisui's eyes spun rapidly as he activated his ultimate genjutsu, Kotoamatsukami.
Unlike other Sharingan illusions, Kotoamatsukami didn't require direct eye contact to control its target and was nearly impossible to resist.
Yet, as in their last encounter, Shisui's invincible genjutsu failed once again. Despite being in clear view, Obito's form flickered like an illusion, as though he didn't exist at all.
"It's useless. Your genjutsu has no effect on me!" Obito laughed.
His body was currently in a state of intangibility, a result of his Kamui ability. While Shisui's Kotoamatsukami was formidable, it couldn't touch someone who was, in a sense, not there.
"Shadow Clone Jutsu!"
Realizing his genjutsu was ineffective, Shisui drew his katana and formed a hand seal.
In an instant, several clones of Shisui appeared around him, each indistinguishable from the others.
"You should know that with these eyes, I can see through any clone technique!"
Ignoring the clones, Obito went straight for the real Shisui. The branch in his hand pierced Shisui's body—
—but the moment it made contact, Shisui's body disintegrated into mist. It was a clone!
"A clone? Impossible. How could it be a clone?" Obito's voice was filled with surprise.
With the Mangekyō Sharingan's enhanced perception, it should've been impossible to confuse a clone for the real person. He was certain he had attacked the real Shisui, yet it had turned out to be a clone.
"Every one of me here is real… and a clone," Shisui's voice echoed around him.
Shisui was a master of the Body Flicker Technique and had developed his own unique variation of it—Shisui-style Instant Body Technique. By using this technique, he could switch places with his clones at will, making each clone both a real entity and a mere illusion.
