Chapter 111: Fuinjutsu Monarch

The evening air was cool as Ryu stepped into the house, his heart racing with anticipation. Today was the day—his eagerly awaited first actual lesson in Fuinjutsu. He had spent the past few weeks studying over a thousand different words, memorising symbols with precision and efficiency. He even tried predicting the meaning of a few uncategorised and unknown words, comparing them with similar known patterns. Now, it was time to apply that knowledge in practice.

As he entered the room, he found Grandpa Dan, sitting calmly at the low table, preparing materials for the lesson.

"Welcome back," Dan said without looking up, his voice steady but warm. "Are you ready for your first Fuinjutsu lesson?"

Ryu grinned, his confidence unwavering. "I was born ready."

Dan chuckled softly, finally glancing up at him. "Good. Go get refreshed. We'll start once you're ready."

Fuinjutsu—the mysterious art of sealing—was a craft few could master, and now it was his turn to begin. He quickly washed up. When he returned, Dan was seated at the low table, a bottle of ink and several blank sheets of paper laid out before him.

"Sit," Dan instructed, gesturing to the spot across from him.

"This," Dan began, picking up one of the sheets, "is chakra paper. It's used in most Fuinjutsu because it can store and transmit chakra. Without it, the seals would be unstable, and the chakra would dissipate."

Ryu leaned forward slightly, absorbing every word. He had seen this chakra paper in action in anime and manga, but it was not explained in such detail there, but hearing it from Dan, a master of Fuinjutsu, made it feel more real, more tangible.

"Grandmasters," Dan continued, "can use Fuinjutsu on living flesh without this paper, but even for them, it's difficult. Not all grandmasters can do it, and it depends on the type of seal and the grandmaster as well. Cursed seals, for example, are often placed on living bodies rather than fuinjutsu paper."

"Air," Dan added, "can also be used as a medium for simpler Fuinjutsu. It's used in techniques like [Summoning jutsu], which require only a fraction of a second for activation."

Ryu's eyes lit up. "Summoning jutsu is Fuinjutsu?"

Dan explained, "Yes, the summoning contract is grounded in the principles of Fuinjutsu, specifically through the use of fuinjutsu seals." You sign a contract in blood with a ninja beast, and that contract is signed with Fuinjutsu by both parties. The actual summoning process is a space-time ninjutsu, but the contract itself is a fuinjutsu seal."

He had always thought of summoning as a purely ninjutsu-based technique, but now he realised how intertwined the two arts were. It was like peeling back the layers of a puzzle, each piece revealing something new.

Dan picked up the bottle of ink, swirling it gently. "This is special chakra ink. It's designed to conduct chakra more efficiently than regular ink, ensuring stronger and more stable seals. But there's another alternative—blood. Blood is a natural conductor of chakra, which is why it's often used in more powerful seals and especially in cursed seal rituals."

Ryu had heard and seen the use of blood in seals before, but from the perspective of a doctor, the idea of using his own blood in Fuinjutsu was… unsettling.

Dan set the bottle down and continued, "There are a few grandmasters who can write seals using chakra alone, without ink or blood. However, that is a rare talent that calls for a great deal of chakra, extremely precise chakra control, and exceptional fuinjutsu skills.

Ryu nodded, mentally cataloging the information for future reference. Ryu realized that Fuinjutsu was much more complex than he had imagined; anime had only touched the surface, leaving him in awe.

Dan continued with his lession, "The environment plays a big role in Fuinjutsu. Most materials don't allow chakra to flow properly, which is why we use chakra paper. There's always some efficiency loss when using other surfaces, and over time, the seals can deteriorate due to environmental wear and tear."

Ryu thought back to the anime fights of the Fourth Hokage, Minato Namikaze, using his legendary kunai and signature jutsu. Silently, he thought, "The Flying Thunder God Jutsu."

"Now I get it. That handle wasn't just for show—it was designed to hold the Flying Thunder God seal. That special handle was probably designed to keep the seal stable for long periods of time."

He also remembered how Minato had placed the Flying Thunder God mark on Obito the night Naruto was born. Even after Minato's death, the mark had remained.

Ryu reflected, "Minato Namikaze must have truly been a Fuinjutsu grandmaster, surpassing others in skill."

But then another question formed in his mind. "Is there a rank beyond grandmaster?" he asked, his voice thoughtful. "Not all grandmasters are equal, right? Shouldn't there be a classification among them or above them?"

Dan replied, "No, there isn't. Grandmasters are differentiated solely by experience."

Deep in thought, Ryu frowned. "Then maybe there should be. If there isn't a rank above grandmaster, I'll create one."

Dan laughed, a deep, hearty sound that filled the room. "Oh? And what will you call this new rank?"

Ryu grinned, his eyes sparkling with mischief. "Fuinjutsu Emperors. And above that, Fuinjutsu Monarch."

Dan's laughter grew louder. "Fuinjutsu Monarchs, huh? I like the sound of that. If anyone can become a Fuinjutsu Monarch, it's you."

Ryu's grin widened. "The difference between an Emperor and a Grandmaster will be like the difference between an S-rank ninja and a Kage-level ninja. Not much, but still a significant gap. And a Monarch will be a step higher."

Dan shook his head, still chuckling. "So you're going to surpass all the Kages with just Fuinjutsu alone? I look forward to it."

Ryu's expression shifted to one of unwavering determination as he affirmed, "I will."

Dan's laughter subsided, and he gave Ryu a long, appraising look. "Shall we return to the lesson, my future Monarch?"

Ryu nodded, his determination resurfacing as he refocused on the lesson ahead.

Dan began explaining the different types of Fuinjutsu, listing them off one by one. "Barrier seals, detection wards, privacy wards, cursed seals, explosion tags… These are the basics. Summoning jutsu, storage seals, and most space-time ninjutsu are all forms of Fuinjutsu."

Dan continued, "Barrier seals are used to create protective barriers. They can be as simple as a small shield or as complex as a full-scale defensive wall. Detection wards are used to sense intruders or monitor an area. They're often used in conjunction with barrier seals."

Ryu nodded, his mind already envisioning how he could use these seals in the field. "A layered defence, huh? That sounds like something I could use to protect a base or even set up a trap."

"Privacy wards," Dan went on, "are used to block sound or prevent people from seeing or sensing what's happening inside a certain area. They're often used by shinobi who need to have private conversations or conduct secret operations."

Ryu's smirk widened. "I could definitely use one of those. Now that Hokage has promised my safety for the time being, my biggest worry is information leaks. Privacy wards might be useful."

"Cursed seals," Dan said, his tone growing more serious, "are dangerous. They're used to place restrictions or control over someone. They're not to be taken lightly."

Ryu had a serious expression. "Cursed seals… those sound like they could be a double-edged sword. Powerful, but risky. But did he not list anything like a blessing seal? Is that even a thing? I could attempt to create one later if it isn't."

"Explosion tags," Dan continued, "are a more straightforward application of Fuinjutsu. They're used to create explosive seals that can be triggered remotely or on contact. They're simple but effective."

Ryu nodded. "I've seen them used in the anime all the time."

Dan's voice softened as he moved on to the more advanced forms of Fuinjutsu. "There are also space-time fuinjutsu and soul-based fuinjutsu. They are the most advanced and most dangerous kind of fuinjutsu. Strictly a forbidden class of fuinjutsu."

Ryu's eyes sparkled with excitement. "Space-time ninjutsu... manipulating space and time with seals? That's truly fascinating. I definitely want that."

"There are many other types," Dan concluded, "but these are the core classifications. Mastering these basic seals will provide you with a solid foundation to build on.

Ryu nodded, his mind buzzing with ideas. This was only the beginning, but he could already feel the potential of Fuinjutsu unfolding before him.

"Barrier seals? That could be useful for defence. Detection wards may help automate them. I could use those to set traps or monitor an area. Privacy wards… well, those could come in handy if I ever need to keep someone from eavesdropping." He smirked at the thought. "And cursed seals… I bet they're powerful for an individual. But I think Blessing-seals would be more beneficial for someone with a huge army at his disposal."

"One step at a time," he affirmed. "One seal at a time."
