Yami entered stealth mode and slipped through the destroyed hole in the dome. Inside, thick dust obstructed his vision, but with soul vision, he managed to locate the others.
He sensed only three familiar souls, which meant they were the only ones left.
Canceling his stealth mode, Yami moved toward them.
Suddenly, the sound of shurikens cutting through the air reached him.
"Shit!"
Quickly drawing a kunai, he deflected the shurikens and shouted, "Wait, wait, it's me, Yami!"
"Yami?!"
He heard Rin's voice, and as the dust began to settle, he could finally see them clearly.
"It's really Yami!" Kakashi lowered the shurikens in his hand, and both he and Rin looked at him in surprise, though neither showed any joy.
Glancing to the side, Yami saw the reason why.
Obito lay on the ground, half of his right side buried under the rubble.
"Rin... please, hurry and take my eye. Implant it in Kakashi... this is my last request," Obito said weakly.
"I... I understand," Rin choked out, reaching toward him with trembling hands.
After gently removing his eye, she led the silent, teary-eyed Kakashi to the side and began the operation.
"Yami… are you there?" Obito's voice was faint but steady.
"Yeah," Yami replied.
"…I'm happy you made it out alive," Obito murmured.
"Yeah, I was lucky… but it looks like you guys had it rough."
"Heh, we sure did…" Obito coughed up blood. "I know we're not that close, but could you please take care of Kakashi and Rin?"
"I…" Yami hesitated. "I don't know if I can do that, but I can at least make sure they'll be fine until Minato arrives."
"I see… thank you." Obito didn't seem displeased, though maybe he barely had the energy to react.
Yami placed his hand on the rubble, contemplating. 'If I pour my spiritual energy into it, I could animate it briefly to pull Obito out, but that's not the main issue. His right side must be completely crushed under all this weight, and no one here could heal him, not even Tsunade. Without Hashirama's cells, he wouldn't survive even a few minutes.'
A sudden thought crossed his mind. 'Should I animate the rubble and take his right eye?'
But he quickly dismissed the idea. The moment he moved the rubble, Kakashi and Rin would rush over, leaving him no chance to extract the eye. He couldn't exactly ask Obito for his Sharingan either; he was certain Obito would prefer giving it to Rin rather than him.
Besides, even if he somehow managed to get his hands on the Sharingan, it would be more of a burden than a benefit. For one, the Sharingan was still connected to Obito, and Yami would never be able to awaken the Mangekyo without him—which was the main reason for wanting the Sharingan in the first place. And even if he did somehow awaken it, without Hashirama's cells, he would go blind after a few uses. Not to mention the future Kakashi, who suffered due to the Sharingan constantly draining his chakra. So the Sharingan wasn't worth the hassle.
'Then…' Yami pulled out a kunai, contemplating. 'Should I just get rid of him and save the world from future troubles?'
The thought was tempting, considering all the chaos Obito would eventually cause. But Yami was reluctant to kill him—not out of pity, but because doing so would disrupt the only advantage he had: his knowledge of future events. While most of these events weren't his concern, some could be used to his advantage. If he killed Obito now, everything could spiral out of control. Whether Madara would come out of hiding to deal with him or choose another Uchiha was uncertain, but neither option was good for Yami.
"Hey… Obito!" Yami called out.
"Yeah?" Obito responded weakly.
"Remember, not everyone who helps you is a friend. Sometimes it's easier to manipulate people by telling them what they want to hear… remember that, okay?"
"What?" Obito was confused.
Just then, Yami sensed something ominous about 50 meters beneath them. A dark, filthy aura emanated from the presence heading their way. What shocked him was the absence of any emotions from this soul. Normally, no matter how much a ninja tried to mask their feelings, Yami could always sense something, but not with this one—there was absolutely no emotion.
"Shit!" Yami cursed, recognizing the danger.
Without hesitation, he rushed over to Rin, who had just finished implanting the Sharingan and grabbed both her and Kakashi by their clothes before leaping toward the hole.
"Yami… what the—" they both started.
"The dome is about to collapse," Yami quickly explained.
"But Obito…" Rin protested.
"There's nothing we can do for him. He's already dying, and even if you somehow pulled him out, it would only prolong his suffering before his inevitable death. Or do you prefer to die with him?" Yami's tone was firm, leaving no room for argument.
"I…" Rin faltered, torn between her emotions and the harsh reality.
Rin faltered, her gaze shifting between Yami and the crumbling dome where Obito lay. The anguish in her eyes was clear, but she knew Yami was right. There was nothing more they could do for Obito, and staying would only mean throwing away their lives as well.
Before Rin could respond, the ground beneath them rumbled, signaling the imminent collapse of the dome. Yami tightened his grip on both Rin and Kakashi, his eyes hardening with resolve.
"We have to go," Yami urged, pulling them away from the crumbling structure. "If we stay here, we'll all die."
Kakashi, still reeling from the operation and the weight of Obito's last request, nodded numbly. Rin, though hesitant, finally allowed herself to be pulled away.
As they moved, Yami couldn't help but glance back at the dome. He knew this was the moment that would set the wheels of fate in motion. Obito's death—or what should have been his death—would lead to so much pain and suffering in the future. But altering this event was too risky, and Yami knew he couldn't afford to lose the one advantage he had over everyone else: his knowledge of the future.
Once they were a safe distance away, Yami released his hold on Rin and Kakashi. They both stood silently, staring at the dome, which was now nothing more than a pile of rubble.
Rin dropped to her knees, tears streaming down her face as she stared at the remnants of the dome. Kakashi, still in shock, clenched his fists, the new Sharingan in his eye socket throbbing with pain.
Yami watched them both for a moment. "Let's go," he said firmly. "We still need to regroup with Minato and finish the mission."
Kakashi nodded, though his expression was distant. Rin wiped her tears and forced herself to stand. Without another word, the three of them moved away from the scene, leaping through the trees.
As for Obito, Yami knew this wasn't the end. It was just the beginning of something much larger—a storm that would one day engulf the entire world.
Looking at Kakashi, whose tears still flowed, Yami realized how deeply Obito's 'death' had affected him. It was clear that this would change Kakashi. But truthfully, Yami preferred a Kakashi who was focused on the mission rather than one who let emotions get in the way.
Right now, Kakashi wasn't fit to be a captain.
'Well, I can't be the jerk here. They just lost a friend.'
