The old man glanced at the mission in Xuan's hand, his expression hesitant. He advised, "If I'm not mistaken, you're only at the level of a Tokubetsu Jonin right now. Blood Ninja has been a Jonin for years and is extremely powerful. You're a genius of our clan—there's no need to push yourself too hard. You should pick another task. There are some suitable ones among the gray-tier missions."
The elder assumed Xuan was a young, hot-headed ninja trying to prove himself by taking on a challenging task.
Xuan understood the old man meant well, but he also knew his own capabilities. He firmly shook his head, declining the suggestion.
In the later Konoha era, cross-level missions like this would never happen. The village had strict rank systems, making it nearly impossible to take on tasks beyond one's rank. But in the Warring States Period, such restrictions didn't exist. If you believed you were capable, you could accept any mission, even assassination tasks like this one.
The clans during the Warring States followed a survival-of-the-fittest ideology. If a ninja couldn't accurately assess their own strength, they were bound to die on the battlefield eventually. Such individuals could never become competent ninjas.
Seeing that he couldn't dissuade Xuan, the elder sighed and didn't argue further. He silently hoped that the Blood Ninja had already fled the Land of Fire or been killed by other clan ninjas—anything to ensure Xuan wouldn't encounter him.
Xuan tucked the mission paper into his robe and left the mission hall. By mid-morning, the Uchiha compound was bustling, with preparations for battle becoming more intense.
"Hmph, you all can fight your wars. I'll go solo in the 'wild zone' for thirty years, get fully equipped, and then take on five enemies at once." Holding this thought, Xuan headed toward the northwest of the Land of Fire.
"Yo! What a coincidence, Xuan."
As Xuan turned a corner, he saw someone standing on an unfinished stone staircase, arms crossed, greeting him.
Looking closely, Xuan recognized him as Uchiha Madara and couldn't help but smirk. "What are you doing here? And why are you standing on that unfinished staircase—trying to look cool?"
Madara coughed lightly. "I went to your room earlier this morning. Your little maid said you were picking up a mission, so I came here. Just happened to run into you."
Xuan's lips twitched slightly. "Happened to run into me?" It was obvious Madara had been waiting for him, even posing deliberately.
Not wanting to dwell on it, Xuan asked, "What do you want?"
Madara maintained his stance and said, "We'll get to that later. Why did you suddenly decide to take on a mission? Let me see which one you picked."
Without hiding anything, Xuan handed over the black-tier mission scroll.
Madara read it carefully, his expression shifting. He reread it, then asked in a peculiar tone, "Are you tired of living? Taking on a mission even Jonin might struggle with?"
Xuan replied indifferently, "Mind your own business."
Madara trembled with anger, but there was nothing he could do. He threw the mission paper back at Xuan's face and snapped, "Fine, go get yourself killed!"
Xuan easily caught the paper and tucked it back into his robe. "If you've got something to say, make it quick. Don't delay my mission."
With a dark expression, Madara said, "Yesterday, after you left, Father and the others discussed the battle plan against the Hyuga clan in detail. They plan to have Uchiha Dou lead the team to intercept the Senju. But the Senju are powerful, and with Fengjian and Gu lost to us, we're fighting on two fronts. I wanted to ask your opinion—do you think we can win?"
Xuan sighed and looked at Madara with some exasperation. "You came all this way just for that?"
Madara clenched his fists. If looks could kill, Xuan would have been dead ten times over.
"We can win. Goodbye." Xuan dropped this sentence and turned to leave.
"You son of a—" Madara exploded in anger, appearing in front of Xuan in a flash. He clenched his fist and growled, "If you want to fight, just say the word. I'm ready."
Xuan considered teasing him further but realized Madara might actually start a full-on brawl. He relented, saying, "I already said we can win. What more do you want to hear?"
Madara retorted, "If the Senju really interfere, I'm worried we won't hold the line. Last time, we managed to fight both clans for two years because of Fengjian and Gu's strategic locations. Most of our forces were pitted against the Senju, while we only needed elite units to hold the Hyuga. Without those advantages, fighting both clans simultaneously is far less promising. And you just say 'we can win'—what kind of answer is that?"
"You're mistaken."
"What?"
"We're only fighting the Hyuga, not both clans. There's a difference."
Madara stared at him as if he were an idiot.
Reading his expression, Xuan explained, "Don't assume everyone in the clan is foolish. If this war truly involved both clans, no one would charge in recklessly. These are seasoned veterans—don't underestimate them. You need to distinguish one thing: Hyuga is Hyuga, and Senju is Senju. They're two separate clans."
Madara frowned. "Are you saying the Senju might not intervene? That doesn't make sense—the Hyuga are already their subordinates. They'd have no reason not to help."
"Alright, let me put it this way. Imagine the situation was reversed. You're the Uchiha clan leader, and the Hyuga are our subordinates. If the Senju attacked the Hyuga, what would you do?"
"Obviously, I'd send troops to help them…" Madara replied without hesitation. But then his body stiffened, realization dawning on him. He muttered, "No, in that situation, I'd wait for them to fight it out, then swoop in to pick off the survivors. But if we didn't act, it'd look bad. I'd send troops as a show of support, but not the main force."
Madara slowly pieced it together, his eyes lighting up with understanding.
Xuan nodded. "Exactly. The Hyuga clan is strong. While it's humiliating to be a subordinate, as long as their strength remains, it's not a major issue. The Senju likely wouldn't want their subordinate clan to grow too powerful. Whether we weaken the Hyuga or the war drags on, the Senju benefit. They believe they can control the war's outcome whenever they choose. So the pressure from the Senju won't be significant—at least not until the Hyuga are on the verge of defeat."
Madara's eyes gleamed. "Then we have a chance?"
"Yes. The clan elders aren't fools, especially regarding their old rivals, the Senju. Trust me—this war will only hurt the Hyuga. We're here to retaliate, and the Senju don't want the Hyuga too strong. With both great clans targeting them, the Hyuga are bound to suffer. Now, I've got a mission to complete. Goodbye."
After clarifying the situation, Xuan turned and headed out of the Uchiha compound.
