Chapter 11: The Hero of Chalm

The moment of recognition had arrived. The mayor, standing tall on the stage, addressed me with praise and gratitude. My healing prowess had played a crucial role in preventing the city from being overrun by the relentless zombie horde. The townsfolk, those I had healed, had generously offered 2 silver each from their earnings to compensate me. The sum amounted to an impressive 2 gold and 6 silver coins.

Surprised by the gesture, I graciously accepted the coins, but it seemed that some were envious of my reward. Nonetheless, the mayor reassured me that my feat warranted a more substantial award, a recognition that would have been greater if I were an official member of the Adventurer's Guild. However, he compensated for this by bestowing upon me the honorary title of Chalm's hero.

As the murmurs of the crowd grew, questioning the significance of such a title, the mayor explained that Chalm's previous hero had fallen years ago, and it was time to appoint a new one. While some dismissed it as an empty title, the mayor emphasized that it carried significant benefits, including a monthly salary of 1 gold coin and discounts at various establishments. Additionally, I would be granted free lodging at the inn while in town.

Uncertain of the responsibilities entailed, I inquired further. The guild leader stepped forward and clarified that the position of hero was not burdensome, but rather a symbolic role. Chalm hoped that having a remarkable healer like me residing in the town would elevate its status. Although I was free to leave at any time, the town and its hero shared a mutually beneficial relationship – as the town grew, so would my fame as its hero. However, it was also stressed that should the town ever be in dire need, they hoped I would offer my assistance, as the reputation of Chalm's hero would be inexorably tied to the town's fate.

Considering the proposal, I realized that becoming the Hero of Chalm could bring numerous advantages. The townspeople appeared amicable, and being recognized as a resident would make my future endeavors significantly smoother.

"Very well. I shall accept the role of hero, at least until you find a more suitable candidate," I declared with a sense of purpose.

The mayor beamed and presented me with a coin adorned with a glowing sword emblem, reminiscent of the guild leader's weapon. The crowd erupted in applause, though mixed emotions were evident among the onlookers. A moment later, a message flashed across my vision, conveying that the people of Chalm had acknowledged me as their savior, unlocking the prestigious job: Hero.

As the applause gradually subsided, the mayor addressed me once more, "Chalm welcomes you, Hero. May your presence bring prosperity and protection to our town."

The title of Hero felt surreal as if I had stepped into the pages of an epic tale. Though accidental, I would embrace this newfound role with determination and dedication. It was time for me to make Chalm my new home, a place where my abilities as a White Mage could flourish, and my name as a hero could be etched into the annals of history.
